I grew up hearing, “Figure it out, but don’t look it up.” I use this advice when I’m tempted (诱惑) to turn to a search engine for answers. Should all of us limit our use of technology
Nicholas Carr, the author of The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains, says that we should take some time away from screens. “Deep thinking happens only when our minds are calm and attentive.” It is difficult to focus while we are using the Internet. People tend to look up a question and end up skimming (浏览) through unrelated information. Some people might not even notice when they start mindlessly clicking.
In “Cognitive Offloading: How the Internet Is Changing the Human Brain”, Philip Perry describes a test that compared two groups. One group couldn’t use any sort of device to answer questions. The other group was allowed to use Google. The group that had access to their smartphones immediately looked up answers on the Internet. The group without smartphones were quicker at answering questions because they didn’t reach for their smartphones. While it’s true that the Internet gives us answers quickly and reliably, we may forget that we can get the answers so easily.
David Price, a guest blogger on a website, says that teaching may be getting easier with Google because parents can now use the Internet to help with their kids’ homework. This led me to think about our schooldays. When my class had a math test, most of us used calculators (计算器) at every opportunity even though everyone in that room was able to solve each problem. The Internet is like that because we know the answers to many questions we search for. We have to at least attempt to use our minds for problem-solving so we don’t forget how to do so. If we always turn to technology for answers, we’ll never learn anything on our own.
I understand that the problems with technology are only when it is used in a certain way, but it’s not the solution to every problem. The positives of technology don’t remove the negatives. It’s time to take a step back from technology and take a break from our devices.
1.What may happen when we’re using the Internet
A. We will be in a good mood.
B. We will become less efficient.
C. We will find it hard to think deeply.
D. We will respond quickly to information.
2.What does the test in Paragraph 3 show
A. People are easily tempted by the information on the Internet.
B. People don’t have to rely on the Internet all the time.
C. A limit to the spread of the Internet is necessary.
D. Webs can offer answers more reliably.
3.Why does the author mention his school math test
A. To show different learning methods at different times.
B. To stress the importance of learning by ourselves.
C. To express his agreement to Price’s opinion.
D. To praise the development of technology.
4.What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Is Teaching Becoming Easier with Parents’ Help

We all know that too much time on phone, laptop or computer is bad for our attention spans and mental health, but overusing them is officially wrecking our physical health too. Back pain and “tech neck”—a combination of pain, stiffness and inflammation (炎症) in the neck and shoulders, caused by hunching over screens—are the most common complaints.
At 7 am my alarm goes off and I reach for my phone. Instead of putting it straight back down, I’ll spend at least 10 minutes scrolling (滚屏) before I get up to make breakfast, bending over at my screen while I lie on my side.
“Do not do that. That’s a total disaster,” Maxine Valensky says, an office physiotherapist.
That’s because when I’m looking down at my phone, I’m bending my head at an angle and exaggerating the force of my head on my neck.
A recent study from King’s College London found that an upright head puts about 5 kg of pressure on the spine. Being hunched (弓身) over can up that weight to 12 kg, when at a slight bend of 15 degrees, or a much heavier 22 kg if I’m really craning over at a 45 degree angle.
“You’re asking your spine to do a whole lot of work,” Maxine says. “It’s almost like holding out a bowling ball with an outstretched hand for an hour—it’s impossible for that not to start hurting.”
The best thing to do is not to engage with your phone until you’re up and ready. But if you’re determined to scroll in bed, it’s better to sit upright with your back supported and your elbow propped (支撑) up on your leg, so you can actually relax. Instead of craning over, hold your neck up in a natural resting position, with your chin in a slight nod.
5.What does the underlined word “wrecking” probably mean in paragraph 1
A. Boosting. B. Opposing. C. Restricting. D. Destroying.
6.What will the pressure on your neck be if your head is tilted at a 30 degree angle
A. 12 kg. B. 18 kg. C. 22 kg. D. 27 kg.
7.How does Maxine illustrate the severity of hunching over screens
A. By highlighting figures. B. By analyzing causes.
C. By using a metaphor. D. By providing evidence.
8.As for the proper posture to scroll, which would the author agree with
A. Lowering one’s head while sitting upright.
B. Lying on one’s stomach in a relaxed manner.
C. Sitting up in bed while supporting one’s back.
D. Standing upright in a resting position.

It’s fair to say that many parents focus a lot of energy—and worry—on protecting their small kids from risky situations. But this past weekend, reporter Ellen Barry published a piece about a growing movement in Britain: people are bringing risk into the playground experience.
1 It contrasts with sheltering kids with the less demanding facilities typical of playgrounds. As Barry puts it, including limited risk into our kids’ playtime may be taking a step toward healthier child development. He cites a sign posted outside the Princess Diana Playground in London’s Kensington Gardens. 2 They are intentionally provided, so that your kids can develop an appreciation of risk in a controlled play environment.
3 Communities in Australia, Canada, and Sweden are making similar changes to their playgrounds. They want kids to learn and grow by facing challenges they can handle, Barry reports.
Controlled risk at play time—where, after all, the children are still under close supervision (监护)—would seem a good addition to the free-range child movement. In that initiative, it’s suggested that free-range kids take walks in nature or ride public transportation on their own. 4 Besides, considering child development from an evolutionary (进化的) view offers more backing. Our long journey through time and nature has made us who we are today, with behaviors, thoughts and bodies shaped. 5 Looking at this bigger picture helps us understand why people make such a choice.
A. Kids learn best while playing.
B. More exploration is expected.
C. It says it’s okay for kids to take some risks.
D. Limited-risk playgrounds begin to catch on.
E. The idea is to help kids become tough and strong.
F. Generally, they are encouraged to get outside and acquire independent skills.
G. It is therefore important to let kids do things that match how they naturally grow.

One day I typed into ChatGPT all about my upset feelings and it instantly responded, offering a list of practical advice. Nowadays millions of people are already turning to ChatGPT and specialist therapy (治疗) chatbots for convenient and inexpensive mental health support.
Some experts say this is a boon. After all, AI, undisturbed by embarrassment and burnout, might be able to express empathy (同理心) more openly and tirelessly than humans. But others worry about the consequences of people seeking emotional support from machines that can only pretend to care. Some even wonder if the rise of so-called empathetic AI might change the way we interact with one another. Indeed, empathy is one of our species’ defining qualities, developing as it did in pace with social interaction.
One recent analysis about empathy looked at 52 studies published between 1980 and 2019, which shows that the empathiser must first be able to recognize how the other person is feeling. They must also be affected by those emotions and differentiate between themselves and the other person, grasping that the other person’s feelings aren’t their own while still being able to imagine their experience.
On the first point, in recent years, AI-powered chatbots have made progress in their ability to read human emotions, most powered by large language models (LLMs) that work by predicting which words are most likely to appear together based on training data. In this way, LLMs like ChatGPT can seemingly identify our feelings and respond appropriately most of the time. But when it comes to the other criteria, AI still misses the mark in many ways. Empathy is interpersonal, with continued feedback helping to perfect the empathiser’s response, which also requires some degree of intuitive (直觉的) awareness of an individual and their situation.
All of this helps to explain conversations like the ones I had with ChatGPT. At the end of the day, despite talking to multiple chatbots online, I did what I knew I had to do all along: I picked up my phone and called a friend.

When Areej El-Jawahri, a doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, signed the contract to purchase the house specially designed to fit the needs of multigenerational (多代的) residents, she knew she wanted her parents, who then lived in Michigan, to join her. “I wanted them to be in a state where I could help manage their health care needs,” she said. “As an only child from a Middle Eastern background, our culture is all about family units.”
El-Jawahri’s choice was not unique. A Pew Research Center analysis found that from 1971 to 2021, the number of people living in multigenerational households increased, with the share of the US population in these homes more than doubling, from 7 percent in 1971 to 18 percent in 2021.
“Rents in Boston are so high that I see lots of multigenerational living. Many young people move back in with their parents,” said Connie Brown, a global real estate adviser in Charlestown. “I have a rental apartment that’s $5, 000 a month, and we collect the first month’s rent, a security deposit (保证金), and our service fee, so it’s $20, 000 just to walk into the door.”
One of Brown’s clients, Brian Lash changed space over his garage to an apartment for his 92-year-old dad. “Living with my dad for those months was wonderful,” he said, noting that his father has since passed away. “We watched basketball, baseball, and golf, we went out for dinner, and I cooked for him. Those are the days I would never have had if I hadn’t built that apartment.”
Still, experts encourage people to have an open conversation before they move in together. They propose that both parties talk about whether there are shared expenses and who is responsible for what and that they put their agreements in writing. Cohabitation (同居) agreements are common among friends, but they are equally crucial for multigenerational families. Putting it in writing at the beginning of the process enables people to clarify viewpoints, and sometimes allows them to decide whether to move in together or not.
这是一篇说明文。文章介绍多代同堂的生活方式在美国越来越流行。
13.Why did El-Jawahri purchase the specially designed house
A. To ensure that her parents could be better cared.
B. To follow the traditional virtues of American culture.
C. To experience culture in a multigenerational community.
D. To acquire more household property in Boston for herself.
A 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“ ‘I wanted them to be in a state where I could help manage their health care needs,’ she said. ‘As an only child from a Middle Eastern background, our culture is all about family units.’ (她说,‘我希望他们处于一个我可以帮助管理他们医疗需求的状态。作为来自中东背景的独生子女,我们的文化都是关于家庭团体的。’)”可知,El-Jawahri购买了这所特别设计的房子,是为了确保她的父母能够得到更好的照顾。故选A。

14.What does the Pew Research Center analysis show about multigenerational living
A. It is popular with Middle Easterners.
B. It is mainly favored by senior citizens.
C. It has seen greater acceptance in the US.
D. It frequently occurs in single-child families.

He cites a sign posted outside the Princess Diana
Playground in London’s Kensington Gardens.
In that initiative, it’s suggested that free-range kids
take walks in nature or ride public transportation on their own.

The little country schoolhouse was heated by an old fashioned, pot-bellied stove. A little boy had the job of coming to school early each day to start the fire and warm the room before his teacher and his classmates arrived.
One morning, they arrived to find the schoolhouse engulfed (吞没) in flames. They dragged the unconscious little boy out of the flaming building more dead than alive. He had major burns over the lower half of his body and was taken to the nearby county hospital.
From his bed the dreadfully burned, semi-conscious little boy faintly heard the doctor talking to his mother. The doctor told his mother that her son would surely die—which was for the best, really—for the terrible fire had devastated (破坏) the lower half of his body.
But the brave boy didn’t want to die. He made up his mind that he would survive. Somehow, to the amazement of the physician, he did survive. When the mortal (致死的) danger was past, he again heard the doctor and his mother speaking quietly. The mother was told that since the fire had destroyed so much flesh in the lower part of his body, it would almost be better if he had died, since he was doomed to be a life-time cripple (瘸子) with no use at all of his lower limbs.
Once more the brave boy made up his mind. He would not be a cripple. He would walk. But unfortunately from the waist down, he had no motor (引起运动的) ability. His thin legs just dangled there, all but lifeless.
Ultimately he was released from the hospital. Every day his mother would massage (对……按摩) his little legs, but there was no feeling, no control, nothing. Yet his determination that he would walk was as strong as ever. When he wasn’t in bed, he was confined (限制) to a wheelchair.

World Environment Day Activities
World Environment Day is just around the corner. I’d like to recommend two activities to celebrate the day.
Firstly, an Environment Day display board competition should be organized. On the display boards environmental protection knowledge will be introduced and various ways to conserve our planet can be offered. This competition will be a golden opportunity to raise students’ awareness of environmental issues and foster their problem-solving skills. Secondly, we’d better build a garden on our campus where students can grow vegetables and get involved in the whole process of plant growth, from seed to harvest. Through it, students will gain hands-on experience, learn to respect others’ labor and reduce food waste.
All in all, both activities are practicable and fun, which undoubtedly will appeal to students and help enhance their environmental awareness.

One sunny day his mother wheeled him out into the yard to get some fresh air. As she pushed the chair along the yard, there was a group of kids about his age chasing each other around. On seeing such a cheerful scene, the boy looked at his legs, willing them to move and carry him like before. He struggled to his feet, feeling a sharp pain in his legs. “I didn’t lose them, mom!” the little boy looked at his mother and said excitedly. Hope sparked within him. Over the next few weeks, he asked his mother to take him outside every day, to practice inch by inch, step by step.
Ultimately through his strong determination, he did develop the ability to stand up. Slow and frustrating as his progress was, he refused to yield to despair. Every small movement was a victory, every challenge was overcome. With his mother’s massage and his perseverance, the faint stand grew into steady strength. It was the unmerciful fire that destroyed his body. However, it was his determination and his mother’s support that changed his destiny.

I couldn’t speak because I got emotional and was about to cry. The smile she directed at me forced its way through the walls I had built. I blinked at the tears threatening to spill over. “I—don’t,” I paused, wiping the tear that had escaped and was running its way down my face. “It’s hard,” she cut in, saving me from crying. “I know how hard it is sometimes, and if you ever need help, please call me.” “Thank you,” I said. “Call me.” she said, smiling at my brother and me, and then left.
I did call her, and she became as close as family and taught us a lot. She often babysat for free. She had a lot to teach me lessons I couldn’t have unearthed in any book. My experience with her became a master class on the depth and breadth of kindness. Pam helped me remember that it was worth taking the time to teach people about autism, because people enlightened about the challenges and rewards of autism are kinder. They are part of a better future for my brother. And for that, I am forever grateful.

Alban decided to visit Ms Taylor again. It took Alban days to summon the courage to visit Ms Taylor, driven by nostalgia for her past support. With a trembling heart and flowers in hand, he arrived at her home. Greeted by her warm smile, they conversed amidst the comforting scents of books and tea. Expressing gratitude and regret, Alban was astonished when Ms Taylor apologized for her inaction during the Grade 9 incident, revealing her own struggles then. Their heartfelt conversation spanned hours, restoring the frayed bond, and they arranged to go camping together.
As scheduled, the day when Ms Taylor and Alban went camping came. Hiking familiar trails, Alban and Ms Taylor revisited the past, surrounded by nature’s tranquility and the bittersweet scent of nostalgia. By a gurgling stream, they reenacted old camping rituals under starlight. Sharing tales around the fire, Ms Taylor imparted the impact of her students, especially Alban. Touched, Alban divulged his post-college aspirations and anxieties. Amidst nature’s peace, they found comfort and a deepened connection, proving that forgiveness fosters renewed bonds. Their journey wasn’t mere reunion—it healed, teaching that second chances nurture relationships.(共20张PPT)

World Environment Day Activities
World Environment Day is just around the corner.

World Environment Day Activities
World Environment Day is just around the corner. I’d like to recommend two activities to celebrate the day.
Firstly, an Environment Day display board competition should be organized. On the display boards environmental protection knowledge will be introduced and various ways to conserve our planet can be offered. This competition will be a golden opportunity to raise students’ awareness of environmental issues and foster their problem-

solving skills.

They dragged the unconscious little boy out of the flaming
building more dead than alive.
When the mortal (致死的) danger was past, he again heard the
doctor and his mother speaking quietly.
Every day his mother
would massage (对……按摩) his little legs, but there was no feeling, no control, nothing. Yet his determination that he would walk was as strong as ever. When he wasn’t in bed, he was confined (限制) to a wheelchair.
