When it comes to architectural accomplishments, humans like to think they stand at the top of the pyramid. That is to underestimate the astonishing achievements of social insects: termites (白蚁) raise skyscraping nests and honeybees fashion geometric combs. The true master builders of the insect world, however, are the hundreds of species of stingless bees, which weave combs of unequalled variety and complexity.
A group of biologists led by Viviana Di Pietro in Belgium, reports that, like humans, these tiny creatures are capable of building according to different architectural traditions handed down over generations.
To collect their data, Ms Di Pietro and her colleagues observed over 400 colonies (群体) of the stingless bee species in a large apiary (养蜂场) in Brazil over two extended periods in 2022 and 2023. Around 95% of the colonies exhibited combs built in horizontal layers, like tiered (分层) wedding cakes, while the remainder adopted a spiral structure. In each case the tradition was maintained over many generations of worker bees. To rule out a genetic explanation for the different styles, the researchers transplanted workers from colonies built in one tradition to colonies built in the other. The imported workers soon switched to the local style.
Dr Wenseleers, who runs the lab, put forward a theory that the bees may switch styles to fix the extremely small construction errors made by their predecessors (前辈). In this process, multiple organisms indirectly affect each other’s behaviour through the traces they leave on their environment. To test it, the researchers introduced a hint of spiral to horizontal-layer combs, and found that it caused the bees to switch to building spirals. That is strong evidence in favour of Dr Wenseleers’s theory.
These results have left observers of animal culture abuzz, as they suggest that stingless bees can transmit different building traditions across generations without being instructed by their peers. For Dr Whiten, the new finding indicates that more complex animal behaviours—the building of nests by chimpanzees, for instance—may also have arisen through such indirect transmission.

Jane Jacobs spent her working life advancing a distinct vision of the city — in particular focusing on what makes a successful urban community. At the heart of her vision is the idea that urban life should be an energetic and rich affair, whereby people are able to interact with one another in dense (稠密) and exciting urban environments. She prefers disorder to order, walking to driving, and diversity to uniformity.
For Jacobs, urban communities are organic beings that should be left to grow and change by themselves and not be subject to the grand plans of so-called experts and officials. The best judges of how a city should be — and how it should develop — are the local residents themselves. Jacobs argues that urban communities are best placed to understand how their city functions, because city life is created and sustained through their various interactions.
Jacobs notes that the built form of a city is crucial to the life of an urban community, especially the sidewalks. The streets in which people live should be a tight pattern of crossed sidewalks, which allow people to meet, talk, and get to know one another. Such a complex but ultimately enriching set of encounters helps individuals know their neighbours and neighbourhood better.
Diversity and mixed-use of space are also, for Jacobs, key elements of this urban form. The commercial, business, and residential elements of a city should not be separated out but instead be side by side, to allow for greater integration of people. There should also be a diversity of old and new buildings, and people’s interactions should determine how buildings get used and reused.
Finally, urban communities grow better in places where a critical mass of people live, work, and interact. Such high-density spaces are, she feels, engines of creativity and vitality. They are also safe places to be, because the higher density means that there are more “eyes on the street”: shopkeepers and locals who know their area and maintain a close watch over the neighbourhood.
5.What does Jacobs find most important for a successful urban community
A. Efficient public transport. B. Strong interaction between people.
C. Uniform style of buildings. D. A comparatively large population.
6.Who does Jacobs think should make decisions on urban development
A. Local residents. B. Government officials.
C. City planners. D. Construction workers.
7.How does Jacobs suggest sidewalks be built
A. Lined with plants. B. Painted with clear signs.
C. Tightly connected. D. Convenient for the old.
8.According to Jacobs, the “eyes on the street” bring a sense of ________.
A. pride B. comfort C. security D. urgency

本文属于研究发现, 第二段“A group of biologists led by Viviana Di Pietro in Belgium, reports that, like humans, these tiny creatures are capable of building according to different architectural traditions handed down over generations.”
根据第一段中的“At the heart of her vision is the idea that urban life should be an energetic and rich affair, whereby people are able to interact with one another in dense (稠密) and exciting urban environments.
根据第二段中的“For Jacobs (对于Jacobs来说)”以及“The best judges of how a city should be — and how it should develop — are the local residents themselves. 故选A。
根据第三段中的“The streets in which people live should be a tight pattern of crossed sidewalks, which allow people to meet, talk, and get to know one another. Such a complex but ultimately enriching set of encounters helps individuals know their neighbours and neighbourhood better.
根据最后一段中的“They are also safe places to be, because the higher density means that there are more “eyes on the street”: shopkeepers and locals who know their area and maintain a close watch over the neighbourhood.
B项与空前一句句式同为祈使句,且选项中的“all the characteristics”是对下文caring, creative, generous, a good listener, fun to be around的品质的概括,且与下一句中的They呼应。
选项中的They指代“a friend or family member”, “doing the exercise”和上文的“help add to your list”是前后承接的关系。

To mark International Women’s Day, we asked Dezeen Awards judges to nominate (提名) a woman in architecture and design who should have greater recognition.
Shefali Balwani
Nominated by Kamna Malik
“Shefali Balwani is an Indian architect. Her projects have a certain voice that goes beyond the conventional definitions of architecture and design. Whenever I look at her work, I see mindfulness on so many levels, whether it is through the use of materials or the sensitivity shown towards the surroundings.”
Oana St nescu
Nominated by Ingrid Moye
“Having met Oana St nescu many years ago while working at SANAA in Tokyo, we have not only been following each other’s path but also become friends. I admire Oana’s curious perspective (视角) through which she observes the world. Her refreshing voice shows not only in her original architectural practice but also in her work as an academic, lecturer, and writer.”
Tatu Gatere
Nominated by Stella Mutegi
“Tatu Gatere is the co-founder and CEO of Buildher—an organization that seeks to empower women with skills needed in the construction industry, which is very male-dominated in Kenya. The skills that these women are empowered with at Buildher make a big impact on every aspect of their daily lives.”

When it comes to the most famous 20th-century painters of the United States, Grandma Moses should be mentioned, although she did not start painting until she was in her late seventies. As she once said to herself, “I would never sit back in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me.” No one could have had a more active old age.
She was a live-in housekeeper for a total of 15 years, starting at 12 years of age. After getting married, she and her husband farmed most of their lives. With no time in her difficult farming life for painting, she had to set aside her passion for it. At age 92 she wrote, “When I was quite small, my father would get me and my brothers pieces of white paper. He liked to see us draw pictures. It was a penny a sheet and lasted longer than candy.” It was her father’s encouragement that fed her passion for painting and this dream was able to manifest (清楚显示) itself later in her life.
Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery (刺绣) as a hobby, but only changed to oils in her old age because her hands became too stiff (僵硬的) to sew and she still wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought all that she painted. Moses’ works, which she called “old-timey” New England landscapes, are careful and lively portrayals of the country life. Moses said that she would “get an inspiration and start painting; then I’ll forget everything, except how things used to be and how to paint it so people will know how we used to live.”
13.What can we learn about Grandma Moses from paragraph 1
A. Her marriage life was not happy.
B. She painted in oils when she was a child.
C. She stopped painting in her late seventies.
D. She still led a colorful life when she was old.
根据第一段中的“No one could have had a more active old age.

Personal Forgiveness
Taking responsibility for mistakes is a positive step, but don’t beat yourself up about them. To err (犯错) is human. 1 You can use the following writing exercise to help you do this.
In a journal or on a piece of paper, put the heading “Personal strengths”. 2 Are you caring Creative Generous A good listener Fun to be around They don’t have to be world-changing, just aspects of
your personality that you’re proud of.
At the top of a second page, put the heading “Acts of kindness”. On this one, list all the positive things you’ve done for others. It might be the time when you helped a friend with their homework, when you did the ironing without being asked, or when you baked cookies after the family had had a tiring day. 3
You could ask a friend or family member to help add to your list.
4 That way, you could exchange thoughts on what makes each of you special and the aspects of your personality that shine through. In fact,
don’t wait until you’ve made a mistake to try this—it’s a great way to boost self-confidence at any time.
It’s something of a cliché (陈词滥调) that most people learn not from their successes but their mistakes. The thing is, it’s true. 5 We’re all changing and learning all the time and mistakes are a positive way to develop and grow.
A. A little self-forgiveness also goes a long way.
B. Now list all the characteristics you like about yourself.
C. They might even like to have a go at doing the exercise.
D. It’s just as important to show yourself some forgiveness.
E. It doesn’t mean you have to ignore what’s happened or forget it.
F. Whatever it is, no matter how small it might seem, write it down.
G. Whatever the mistake, remember it isn’t a fixed aspect of your personality.
B项与空前一句句式同为祈使句,且选项中的“all the characteristics”是对下文caring, creative, generous, a good listener, fun to be around的品质的概括,且与下一句中的They呼应。
选项中的They指代“a friend or family member”, “doing the exercise”和上文的“help add to your list”是前后承接的 关系。

I hurriedly made my way through the busy airport, my mind focusing on the adventure that awaited me at my destination. I had been looking forward to this trip for months and had packed everything I needed for my much-anticipated painting trip. Brushes, canvases (画板), and a column of watercolor paints—my most cherished companions on this creative journey—were carefully placed in my carry-on luggage.
As I approached the security checkpoint, a sense of unease began to settle within me. I couldn’t help thinking that I must have forgotten something. I checked my passport and air ticket. Everything was in their place. Suddenly, my heart skipped a beat, and I realized I had forgotten about the strict rules on liquids in carry-on baggage. I felt a sense of panic as the realization dawned upon me—I would have to part ways with my beloved painting supplies.
Unwillingly, I handed over my paints to the stern-faced (面无表情的) security officer, knowing that they were victims of my carelessness. I felt as if my creative spirit and good mood for the trip had been swept away in a gust of wind. I couldn’t help complaining to him about how important those paints were to me and how much I had been looking forward to this trip. The officer’s straight face provided no comfort as he informed me that I could collect my items upon my return in a week.
Days passed as I silently counted the minutes until I would be reunited with my artistic companions. On the day of my long-awaited return, my heart fluttered with nervous anticipation. As I exited the airplane and made my way to the baggage claim area, a familiar face caught my eye. Amongst the sea of strangers, a security officer stood, holding a package that resembled my beloved art supplies. My eyes widened in disbelief, my steps quickening with each step. Could it be possible that he had gone through the trouble of saving my cherished materials As I reached the security officer, he met my gaze (凝视) with an unexpected smile.
