Japanese scientists have created one of the world’s most unusual spacecraft, the LignoSat probe—a tiny wooden satellite, which will burn into biodegradable ash when it reenters the atmosphere. In experiments carried out on the International Space Station (ISS), it was found particularly stable and resistant to cracking.
The satellite has been built to see if biodegradable materials such as wood can act as environmentally friendly alternatives to the metals from which all satellites are currently constructed.
“All the satellites reentering the Earth’s atmosphere burn and create harmful particles, which will float in the upper atmosphere for years,” Takao Doi, a Japanese astronaut and aerospace engineer, warned recently. “Eventually, it will affect the environment of the Earth.”
To tackle the problem, Kyoto researchers set up a project to evaluate types of wood to determine how well they could withstand the severe conditions of space launch and lengthy flights in orbit round the Earth. The first tests were conducted in laboratories that recreated conditions in space, and wood samples were found to have suffered no measurable changes in mass or signs of decomposition or damage. “Wood’s ability to withstand these conditions astonished us,” said Koji Murata, head of the project.
After these tests, samples were sent to the ISS, where they were subjected to exposure trials for almost a year before being brought back to Earth. Again, they showed little signs of damage, a phenomenon that Murata attributed to the fact that there is neither oxygen in space which could cause wood to burn, nor living creatures to cause it to rot.
Several types of wood were tested, including Japanese cherry, with wood from magnolia trees proving to be the most robust. This has now been used to build Kyoto’s wooden satellite, said Murata.
4.What do the underlined words “the problem” probably refer to in paragraph 4
A. Particles floating in the atmosphere.
B. The metal satellites reentering the atmosphere.
C. The atmospheric pollution caused by satellites.
D. The impact of space junk on the environment.
5.How did the researchers find the result of the tests
A. Jaw-dropping. B. Far-reaching.
C. Hair-raising. D. Ground-breaking.
6.Why did wood samples remain unharmed in space during the tests
A. They can stand severe conditions. B. They are hard to crack.
C. There exist no external risk factors. D. They are resistant to fire.
7.What might be talked about next
A. The use of wood to construct more satellites.
B. The final launch of the wooden satellites.
C. Environmental issues posed by metal satellites.
D. The good permanence of wooden probes in orbit.

Our brains are “programmed” to learn more from people we like—and less from those we dislike. This has been shown by researchers in cognitive neuroscience (认知神经科学) in a series of experiments.
Memory serves a vital function, enabling us to learn from new experiences and update existing knowledge. We learn both from individual experiences and from connecting them to draw new conclusions about the world. This way, we can make inferences about things that we don’t necessarily have direct experience of. This is called memory integration and makes learning quick and flexible.
To examine what affects our ability to learn, and make inferences, Ines Bramao, associate-professor of psychology at Lund University, along with his co-workers, set up experiments where participants were tasked with remembering and connecting different objects. It could be a bowl, ball, spoon, scissors, or other everyday objects. It turned out that memory integration was influenced by who presented it. If it was a person the participant liked, connecting the information was easier compared to when the information came from someone the participant disliked. The participants provided individual definitions of “like” and “dislike” based on aspects such as political views, majors, eating habits, favorite sports, hobbies, and music.
The findings can be applied in real life, according to the researchers. Ines explained: “Suppose a politician argues for raising taxes to benefit healthcare. Later, you visit a healthcare center and notice improvements have been made. If you side with the politician that wanted to improve healthcare through higher taxes, you’re likely to credit the improvements to the tax increase, even though the improvements might have had a completely different cause.”
There’s already vast research describing that people learn information differently depending on the source and how that characterizes polarization and knowledge resistance. “What our research shows is how these significant phenomena can partly be traced back to fundamental principles that govern how our memory works,” says Ines. We tend to form new connections and update knowledge from information presented by groups we favor.

Some people today might be early risers because of DNA they take after Neanderthals tens of thousands of years ago, suggests new research.
When early humans migrated from Africa to Eurasia roughly 70,000 years ago, some of them mated with Neanderthals, who had already adapted to the colder, darker climates of the north. The ripple (涟漪) effects of that intermating still exist today: Modern humans of non-African ancestry (血统) have between 1 and 4 percent Neanderthal DNA. Some of that DNA relates to sleep more specifically, the internal body clock known as the circadian rhythm.
For the new study, researchers compared DNA from today’s humans and DNA from Neanderthal fossils (化石). In both groups, they found some of the same genetic variants involved with the circadian rhythm. And they found that modern humans who carry these variants also reported being early risers.
For Neanderthals, being “morning people” might not have been the real benefit of carrying these genes. Instead, scientists suggest, Neanderthals’ DNA gave them faster, more flexible internal body clocks, which allowed them to adjust more easily to annual changes in daylight. This connection makes sense in the context of human history. When early humans moved north out of Africa, they would have experienced variable daylight hours—shorter days in the winter and longer days in the summer for the first time. The Neanderthals’ circadian rhythm genes likely helped early humans’ offspring (后代) adapt to this new environment.
Notably, the findings do not prove that Neanderthal genes are responsible for the sleep habits of all early risers. Lots of different factors beyond genetics can contribute, including social and environmental influences. The study also only included DNA from a database called the U.K. Biobank—so the findings may not necessarily apply to all modern humans. Next, the research team hopes to study other genetic databases to see if the same link holds true for people of other ancestries. If the findings
do apply more broadly, they may one day be useful for improving sleep in the modern world, where circadian rhythms are disturbed by night shifts and glowing smartphones.

My husband and I just spent a week in Paris. 1 So the first thing we did was rent a fantastically expensive sixth-floor apartment the size of a cupboard. It was so tiny that we had to leave our suitcases in the hallway.
The place wasn’t entirely authentic, though. Unlike a normal Parisian apartment, the plumbing (水管) worked. 2 Our building even had a tiny lift with a female voice that said, “Ouverture des portes,” in perfect French. That is the only French phrase I mastered, and it’s a shame I don’t have much use for it.
Parisians are different from you and me. They never look lazy or untidy. As someone noted in this paper a couple of weeks ago, they eat great food and never gain weight. 3 French strawberries do not taste like cardboard. Instead, they explode in your mouth like little flavor bombs.
4 On our first morning in Paris, I went around the corner to the food market to pick up some groceries. I bought a handful of perfectly ripe small strawberries and a little sweet melon. My husband and I agreed they were the best fruit we had ever eaten. But they cost $18!
In France, quality of life is much more important than efficiency (效率). You can tell this by café life. French cafés are always crowded.
5 When do these people work The French take their 35-hour workweek seriously—so seriously that some labor unions recently struck a deal with a group of companies limiting the number of hours that independent contractors can be on call.
A. Not all the customers are tourists.
B. The quality of life in France is equally excellent.
C. There was a nice kitchen and a comfortable bed.
D. The amazing food is mainly consumed by local farmers.
E. That’s not the only reason the French eat less than we do.
F. Our aim was to see if we could live, in some way, like real Parisians.
G. The food is so delicious that you don’t need much of it to make you happy.

Joey, once again, had taken his entire lunch plate and mixed all the food together. He did something like this pretty much every day at camp. “It’s an experiment,” he told the other campers. “Like what we do in class. It’s fun.” Joey was crazy about experiments, which usually consisted of taking one or more things, and combining them somehow, just like mixing all his food together. Joey would usually take a bite as part of the experiment, and would try to get the other kids at the table to try it too. However, almost nobody ever would like to. Joey’s experiments almost always tasted absolutely horrible.
Joey offered a bite of his unique lunch to the kids at his table. Eric, the only one who sometimes liked Joey’s experiments, decided to give it a try. But even he couldn’t eat more than a bite, which meant the table would lose their “wasted food challenge”—AGAIN.
As part of camp lunch, all the tables weighed their leftovers at the end of the meal. One by one, the tables would line up, empty their plates into a garbage can (垃圾桶), and then the garbage can would be weighed. Whichever table had the least amount of wasted food got to be first in line the next day at lunch. Whichever table had the most amount of wasted food had to stay and wash all the dishes. Each table had the same amount of campers, to be fair. The tables were each named after a different kind of tree. Joey’s table was the Scrub Pine table. Scrub Pine table had lost so many times that everyone laughed at them.
Everyone blamed Joey. He was always the one with the most leftovers. But Joey insisted it wasn’t his fault. He had a trick. Before each weighing, he always mashed up (捣烂) his mixture into the smallest ball possible. Almost everyone else’s plate was littered with uneaten food. Joey just had a ball in the corner of the plate.
Scrub Pine table had already washed dishes four days in a row, and it looked like it was about to be five.

So Eric decided to find a way to figure out whose fault it was.

Joey, taking a glimpse at the “tiny ball” in the corner of his plate, felt confident about his trick. The Scrub Pine table then lined up, Joey at the end of the line.
