I received my architectural training in Italy, earning a traditional degree that didn’t involve working with Computer-Aided Design (CAD). However, my journey with computers began through my passion for music, using sound sampling systems, which catch the “sound reality” of an instrument, and also computer-assisted music composition systems. Little did I know that this exploration would greatly influence my approach to computer science and AI in the years to come.
Self-taught in computer science during my architectural studies, I sought opportunities to specialize further. Ultimately, my journey led me to a pioneering laboratory in Marseille, France, known for its groundbreaking work in computer science applied to architecture. Surrounded by a community of innovators, I improved my skills to explore the transformative power of technology in preserving cultural heritage.
In 2019, the world watched in horror as Notre Dame de Paris (巴黎圣母院) was consumed in flames. Determined to contribute to the restoration efforts, I took the lead in developing a digital ecosystem for the restoration operation. We developed groundbreaking AI tools generating 3D representations from photographs. By tracking the position and shape of voussoirs (拱石), and digitizing them from photographs, we were able to use the fine geometric information of the voussoirs to reconstruct the arch, thus giving valuable information to the architects about the structure, the exact geometry, and especially about constructive details of the oldest areas of the church from the 13th century. Notably, AI played a pivotal role in the process.
As the restoration project progresses, the AI-driven preservation continues to advance. This knowledge will definitely serve as raw material to be used for AI systems, for example, for studies that can be extended to other buildings. Today, the restoration project is in an extremely advanced state. We hope to complete the restoration work before the 2024 Paris Olympics, so that this architectural masterpiece can regain its former glory.
4.What led the author to computer science initially
A. Composing music with CAD. B. Exploring computers for music.
C. Studying for a degree in architecture. D. Developing sound sampling systems.
5.What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The application of AI in restoration. B. The structure of Notre Dame de Paris.
C. The destruction of Notre Dame de Paris. D. The development of AI digital ecosystem.
6.What does the underlined word “pivotal” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Secondary. B. Independent. C. Discouraging. D. Crucial.
7.What is the author’s attitude towards the AI-driven preservation
A. Indifferent. B. Skeptical. C. Optimistic. D. Objective.

My family lost everything in the little-known flood of Baton Rouge, Louisiana last year that the Red Cross called the “worst US disaster since Hurricane Sandy”.
It began raining in mid-August. Then it rained some more, got more powerful, and didn’t stop for days. There was talk that the local rivers were going to crest (到达顶点) and cause some pretty serious flooding. We lived somewhat close to the Amite River, but our senior neighbors told us that our neighborhood hadn’t flooded in over 100 years.
Local news said that the nearby high school may get a little bit of water inside from the rising river. We thought we had a couple of days to plan on how we were going to shelter in place because of the weather forecast.
On the 13th of August I woke up, walked outside and headed toward the direction of the river. Some of the lower areas were collecting water but there was no standing water anywhere near my house or even my neighborhood. I went back home and told my wife we should probably get some supplies in case this got serious; that maybe we should even pack a car in case we needed to leave though I was fairly certain there was nothing to worry about.
About 30 minutes into slowly packing there was a loud banging on my front door. It was my wife’s cousin. I opened the door and she said, “What are you doing ! Get out of the house!” I looked behind her and noticed my entire yard underwater and the waterline only about a half-inch from going over my doorstep and into my house.
I was floored. The river wasn’t supposed to crest until the next day. I thought we had more time.
I yelled at my wife, “We have to get out of the house. Now!”
We packed up both our cars in about 10 minutes with only our most precious memories. Everything else we had built during a 10-year marriage was left behind. We evacuated about 5 miles east away from the river to my wife’s grandmother.
After being there for about an hour someone came to the front door and said, “You guys need to get out. The river is coming.”
Sure enough, her yard was flooding too.
We evacuated a second time in as many hours to her cousin’s house even further east. After only an hour we were told again that the river was on the way and we had to leave.

Solar eclipses (日食) happen when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. These events are always spectacular. But total solar eclipses are extra special. One such eclipse was visible across large parts of North America on April 8, 2024. During that time, sky watchers felt surprised at the view. They also took part in scientific research.
The eclipse was a piece of exciting news for solar science. On April 8, the Sun neared its most active phase when the Sun gave off more radiation and a lot of charged particles from its surface. Such solar storms threatened satellites orbiting the Earth. They even disrupted power grids on the ground. These are what the science pros found.
“Luckily, researchers now have more scientific instruments to study our star than ever before,” said Kelly Korreck, who is an astrophysicist. “This provides a unique chance to learn about the Sun and its effects on our planet and its atmosphere.”
But science pros aren’t the only ones getting in on the fun. Citizen scientists are members of the public who help gather observations and analyze them. “There is a lot of emphasis on citizen science and having folks do solar science projects,” Korreck said.
Scientists hoped to recruit as many phones as possible, which would spread out over the 2,000-mile-long and 100-mile-wide path of the April 2024 eclipse. Korreck said, “That will offer views of the solar shape from a very large number of vantage points. And it’s up to citizen scientists to do it.”
Citizen scientists were able to take part without interrupting their view of the eclipse. They just started an app on their phone and propped it up facing the Sun at least five minutes before the Moon passed in front of the Sun. The app handled the rest. They could get to keep copies of the pictures as a souvenir. “That was a good chance for citizen scientists to contribute to eclipse research,” Korreck said. That’s true whether they set up a camera or installed an app.

Why Do I Need a First Aid Kit
You need a first aid kit because it keeps all your medical supplies together in one place. 1 . If you or a family member needs first aid, you aren’t going to feel like hunting around your house looking for bandages in the bathroom drawer, your desk for a pair of scissors, the medicine cabinet for antibiotic ointment, etc. 2 . Consequently, if someone crashes their bike in the driveway or suffers a burn, you can simply grab the kit and be confident that you have everything you need.
If you’re out of your house on a hike, camping trip, soccer practice or scout outing, then a first aid kit is even more important. 3 if you have to wait until you reach a hospital to get treatment. This will also prevent you from having to improvise (即兴创造) with unsanitary (不卫生的) or inappropriate items that aren’t meant for treatment. 4 .
5 . It is a larger, more comprehensive kit meant to prepare you for a weather or natural disaster. In this case, you may not have access to a hospital or ambulance for some time, making an effective first aid kit even more important to have on hand.
A. A first aid kit is also portable
B. A first aid kit should be at hand
C. A first aid kit is also an effective emergency or disaster kit
D. Even relatively minor injuries can become serious issues
E. Thus, you’ll be able to act quickly in case of an emergency
F. That will surely save you a lot of time and get the victims properly treated
G. A sterile (无菌的) bandage will be more effective than a dirty handkerchief or sweaty T-shirt
3.D 空后的“if you have to wait until you reach a hospital to get treatment”是从句,空处应该是主句,说明“你得等到了医院才能接受治疗”的结果,故D项“即使相对轻的伤口也可能变得严重”符合语境。

Several years ago, I worked as a writing teacher in a rural middle school. I knew all my students. They trusted me with their stories and so I was given the privilege of having a secret bond with each one of them. I taught my students about the power of words, and tried to let them find expression through writing. We learned to trust each other, because we learned how hard it was to write openly and honestly, and we learned sharing words took courage. I was always amazed at the words that came from my students’ hearts.
Later, we had a new student to the school, Al. Al was small and looked younger than other students in my class. He was with us for only a short while and still trying to fit in. So I was a little surprised when he volunteered to read. I smiled and nodded for him to do, while in my mind I was afraid that the others would make fun of the new kid after he read. The room fell silent, and Al began to read.
“If I had one wish, it would be to meet my dad ...” he started out loud and clear.
He had held the attention of my usually restless students for what seemed like 15 minutes. He told of how he had never known his father, who had left the family when he was a baby. He shared the intimate details of his struggles to be the only man in the house at such a young age, of having to mow the lawn and fix broken pipes. He revealed to us the thoughts that went through his mind constantly about where his father might be and why he might have left.

Dear Editor,
I’m Li Hua from Senior 3. I am writing to offer a suggestion for the upcoming new column in our school’s English newspaper, New Campus.
I propose the addition of a column titled “Cultural Spotlight”, which would focus on introducing diverse cultures from around the world. This column would not only enhance our understanding of global cultures but also foster cross-cultural awareness and appreciation among students. Through feature articles, interviews, and cultural snapshots, we could explore the traditions, festivals, and unique aspects of various cultures, thus broadening our horizons and enriching our school life. I believe this new column would be a valuable addition to New Campus and contribute to a more inclusive and culturally diverse learning environment.
Thank you for considering my suggestion.

I looked around the classroom, finding no snickers (窃笑). They all leaned forward in rapt attention. Instead of any signs of disdain, I witnessed a sea of silent, attentive faces. A few heads were nodding and a glistening of tears shimmered in the corners of some eyes. Obviously, Al’s words had touched them deeply. Our classroom had become a safe space for sharing, a testament to the power of empathy and understanding. As their teacher, I felt a surge of pride. I smiled and nodded at Al, encouraging him to continue.
When Al finished the last sentence, all the class stood up and applauded. The applause echoed through the classroom, indicating the fitting-in of Al. As their applause subsided, I could see a new light in their eyes forged by Al’s sharing. Not only did Al’s bravery touch their hearts, but also sowed the seeds of compassion and acceptance that would continue to grow within our classroom. It was a reminder that in our shared vulnerability and honesty, we find the truest connections and the deepest truths about ourselves and each other.(共18张PPT)
