This year’s Student Podcast (播客) Challenge organized by NPR will be open to students from grade 4 to 12 in the US. Is it your first time to enter our contest We’re here to help.
The basics
Students can make a podcast about any topic they’re interested in, as long as they keep it between three and eight minutes. The entries should be purely original work by students. No offensive language will be allowed. And students do need to work with an adult to fill out the submission form to enter the contest.
Where to get started
Choosing a good story is just as important as, if not more important than, your audio production or editing skills. For example, a favorite entry from last year was a personal story, reporting on a young person’s experience of learning to read with dyslexia (阅读障碍).
The selection
Our judges will select a middle school and high school grand prize winner. The grand prize includes a certificate, a trophy (奖杯), and an interview from NPR. For fourth graders — a new category we created last year — we’ll select the best entries and air some or all of those podcasts on NPR programs.
Resources
Before hitting the record button, check out our podcasting resources. We cover everything from how to tell a good story, how to sound like yourself on a microphone to how to use music in your podcast.
For more tips and the latest updates, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at studentpodcastchallenge@npr.org. Good luck!

Nima Rinji Sherpa has become the youngest climber to reach the top of the world’s 14 highest mountains, known as the “8,000ers”. The 18-year-old from Nepal completed his goal on October 9th, 2024 by climbing the 8,027-meter Mount Shishapangma in Xizang, China. Climbing all 14 is such a difficult and dangerous challenge that only a handful of people have managed to complete it.
Nima is a Sherpa (夏尔巴人). Sherpas are a group of people mostly from Nepal who are famous for their exceptional climbing skills. They help make climbing possible. They guide climbers, carry heavy loads, and set up safety equipment. Foreign climbers often get most of the attention for completing the climbs while Sherpas do much of the hard work in the same dangerous conditions. Nima is hoping to bring some of that attention back to Sherpas.
Nima comes from a family of climbers. His father is a famous climber, and his uncles were the first brothers to both climb all of the 8,000ers. However, Nima didn’t start climbing seriously until he was 16 years old. He climbed his first 8,000er, Mount Manaslu, in August of 2022 and climbed Mount Qomolangma, the world’s tallest mountain, earlier in 2024. Nima chose to leave Mount Shishapangma as his last 8,000er. He had planned to climb it last year. But an avalanche (雪崩) at the time killed four people, including his friend and teacher. Nima delayed his plan and joined the rescue team to save other climbers.
Nima describes climbing as a tough sport, saying, “It’s about who can suffer the most when times are the worst.” He hopes his success will make people more aware that Sherpas are as skilled as climbers from any other country and how important Sherpas are to climbing. “My dream is very simple,” Nima said. “It’s just to be one of the best athletes in mountaineering.”
4. What’s paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The climbing skills of Sherpas.
B. The achievements of Sherpas in climbing.
C. The significant role Sherpas play in climbing.
D The relationship between foreign climbers and Sherpas.
5 What can be inferred about Nima from paragraph 3
A. He started climbing when he was 16.
B. He got seriously injured in an avalanche.
C. He climbed Mount Shishapangma as he had planned.
D. He valued other people’s lives more than his own dream.
6. What does Nima hope to achieve through his success
A. To win world-wide fame. B. To honor his friend and teacher.
C. To live up to his parents’ expectations. D. To highlight Sherpas’ contributions to climbing.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Nima
A. Ambitious and brave. B. Talented and outgoing.
C. Considerate and honest. D. Passionate and serious.

Just by typing a few keywords and waiting a few seconds, a picture comparable to that painted by a human artist appears on screen. In some paintings created by AI, an elderly man can become a handsome animated image, and pets can be turned into adorable cartoon girls or boys. Ordinary people without any painting skills can be the possessors of a wonderful artwork with just a few taps of the keyboard.
However, new things are always accompanied by controversy (争议). Issues such as whether AI art generators will replace human artists, and the copyrights on AI paintings are being hotly debated.
Huang Ge, an illustrator from Shanghai, said that it usually takes several hours or days to complete one illustration. But with AI art generators, the efficiency is greatly improved. Ding Jiao, a comic artist, considers the popularity of AI art generators reasonable as many people who are not good at drawing can create great works through them and they can satisfy users’ curiosity.
So is AI painting gradually replacing human painting In the hot topic “using a picture to prove that human artists will never be replaced by AI” online, many netizens uploaded their paintings to prove that humans are better than AI.
“Though AI technology has developed rapidly; AI cannot replace humans as it can just copy human behavior. The warmth and inspiration in human’s creations are irreplaceable,” said Ding Daoshi, an independent analyst in the Internet sector.
Another controversial issue is that there is no consensus of who owns the copyright of AI art. Some users have openly sold their AI paintings and earned money, but it is still a gray area about whether these artworks belong to the users, the digital tool developers or even AI. Ding Daoshi noted that the various sides should get together to debate the issue and come up with some accepted rules as soon as possible because AI is already involved deeply into the lives of human beings.
8. What can be learned about AI from paragraph 1
A. It creates paintings of lower quality.
B. It has been widely used by professors.
C. It has various functions in creating artworks.
D. It is complex for people without basic painting skills.
9. According to Ding Daoshi, why human artists are irreplaceable
A. They are the masters of AI technology.
B. Their behavior can hardly be copied by AI.
C. They give their works warmth and inspiration.
D. They keep exploring and developing their skills.
10. What does the underlined word “consensus” in the last paragraph mean
A. Agreement. B. Concern. C. Argument. D. Misunderstanding.
11. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Art in the New Age. B. Controversies on AI Art.
C. The Future of AI Paintings. D. The Rise of AI Art Generators.

A typical large tree can suck up to 40 kilograms of CO2 out of the air over the course of a year. Now scientists at UC Berkeley say they can do the same job with less than half a pound of a yellow powder called COF-999. COF-999 was designed to trap the greenhouse gas, and then release it when it’s ready to be stored away someplace.
COF-999 could be used in the kinds of large-scale direct air-capture plants that are starting to come online to reduce the amount of CO2. Keeping the concentration of atmospheric CO2 below 450 parts per million (ppm) is necessary to limit global warming to 2℃ above preindustrial levels and prevent some of the most awful consequences of climate change, scientists say. Klaus Lackner, a scientist at Arizona State University who wasn’t involved in the study, agreed that direct air capture will become an important tool for sequestering carbon (碳封存) and cooling the planet.
To test the carbon-clearing capability of COF-999, the researchers packed it into a tube and exposed it to outdoor air in Berkeley for 20 days straight. As the air entered the tube, it contained CO2 in concentrations ranging from 410 ppm to 517 ppm. When it came out the other side, no CO2 was detected.
According to its creators, its porous (多孔的) design increases its surface area, which means more places to hold onto CO2 molecules. As a result, it captures CO2 at a rate that is at least 10 times faster than other materials used for direct air capture. Team members have continued to make improvements and are on track to double its capacity within the next year. Another plus is that COF-999 will loosen its hold on the CO2 when heated to about 60℃. Similar materials must be heated to 121℃ to extract carbon. COF-999 is more durable as well. The team had tested a newer version that worked for 300 cycles before the experiment came to an end. “Achieving 300 cycles without any deterioration (退化) suggests that thousands of cycles may be possible,” said Omar Yaghi, the study’s senior author.
12. What is Klaus Lackner’s attitude toward direct air capture technology
A. Neutral. B. Supportive. C. Concerned. D. Skeptical.
13. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. CO2. B. The air. C. COF-999. D. The tube.
14. Why does COF-999 have higher efficiency compared with other materials
A. It’s easier to work on a large scale. B. It can be reused thousands of times.
C. Its porous design increases its capacity. D. It requires a higher temperature to extract carbon.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. A new material capturing CO2 efficiently.
B. Ways to reduce atmospheric CO2 levels.
C. The importance of reducing CO2 emissions.
D. The effects of global warming on the environment.

___19___ One way to encourage yourself to tackle uncomfortable tasks is by using rewards. Pair an unpleasant task with a desirable activity, or promise yourself a treat once the task is done. This method transforms the task into a stepping stone to something you enjoy.
·Apply the two-minute rule.
The two-minute rule suggests that if a task can be done in two minutes or less, do it immediately. ___20___ For example, if you need to send a quick email, respond to a text, or wash a few dishes, handle it immediately. Once upon a time there was a king who often thought. “Nothing good can come to a station whose people only complain and expect others to solve their problems.” One day, he had an idea.
Early one morning, the king dressed as a farmer and went to a local village. He placed a large stone in the middle of the main road and hid gold coins under the stone. Then he hid behind a huge maple tree and watched.
The first person down the road was a milkman with his cart. He crashed into the stone, spilling the milk everywhere. “What fool put this stone here ” he shouted. He picked himself up and angrily went away.
After a while, a group of women came along, each balancing a pot of water on her head. One woman tripped over the stone and her water pot went crashing to the ground. She picked herself up and limped away in tears. Neither she nor her friends thought about moving the stone out of the road.
The king watched all day as many people complained about the stone, but he found nobody making an attempt to move it. The king was in despair. “Is there no one in this village who feels any responsibility to keep their neighbours from harm ”
Just then, a young girl with her brother came along with their schoolbags on their backs. Seeing the stone, she said to her brother, “This stone is a danger to anyone who comes down the road after dark. We must move it out of the way.” The brother disagreed and hurried away, for their parents were waiting for them to have supper. Ignoring him, the girl stopped and pushed the stone with all her might. After a great deal of effort, she finally succeeded in moving it to the side of the road. Removing the danger, she became wild with joy and it was at that very moment that she saw the gold coins where the stone had been!

Dear fellow students,
Our planet is facing severe environmental challenges — air pollution, plastic waste and deforestation threaten ecosystems worldwide. And it’s time to take immediate action.
Here are my proposals: Firstly, reduce single-use plastics. Carry reusable bags and bottles, which can cut plastic waste by 50%. Secondly, conserve energy. Turn off lights when leaving rooms and choose public transport. If every student does this, our carbon footprint will decrease significantly.
Every effort counts. Let’s join hands and make the Earth — our shared home a greener place to live in.
Yours,
Li Hua
47. 参考范文:
Just then, the king stepped out from behind the tree. Smiling warmly, he approached the astonished girl. “What a nice girl!” he shouted, revealing his identity. “I placed this stone to test people’s attitude towards the problem lying ahead. You were the only one willing to remove the stone. The gold coins are a reward for your not complaining but solving the problem.” the king added. He also explained his belief that a nation thrives when citizens take initiative. Overwhelmed, the girl thanked him, and the king vanished, leaving behind the treasure.
On her way back home, the girl found her parents waiting anxiously at their doorsteps. Beaming with joy, she recounted the adventure — how she moved the stone, met the king, and uncovered the coins. Her parents listened in awe, hugging their selfless and kind daughter. “You taught us all a lesson,” her father said, tears in his eyes “that small acts of kindness bring unexpected rewards.” From then on, the family shared the “gold”, inspiring the villagers to solve problems actively and even go all out to help those in need, which was what the king had wished.
