Bella: Richard, are you familiar with the story of Robinson Crusoe
Richard: Of course, it’s a very famous story of survival.
Bella: So what do you think helps Crusoe get through a hard life on a small island for 28 years
Richard: Well, the most important thing is his calmness in the face of the difficult situation.
Finding himself alone on an island, he doesn’t lose his head, but gets necessary things,
such as guns, tools and food from the ship, before it is completely destroyed by a storm.
Bella: I can’t agree more. And I think he is also very wise, and he actively seeks ways to solve
problems. Just as you mentioned, with his gun and the rice, he can hunt for and grow his
own food.
Richard: I am also amazed by how knowledgeable he is. He knows to live in a cave and build a

fence to keep himself safe. And he can make a fire by rubbing pieces of wood together.
That’s pretty clever.
Bella: He even makes his own clothes by sewing animal skins together. Without those things,
he would have a had a much harder time there.
Richard: That’s true. But to me, his patience also play a necessary part in his survival. I’m quite
impressed when he takes 18 whole days to widen and deepen his cave with simple tools
made of wood. And what surprises me more is that when the cave is destroyed by a
sudden fall of earth, he doesn’t feel depressed, but quickly redoes the work, using
wooden posts to make the cave stronger than before.

City noise never stops. World Health Organization says that loud noises,
like those from traffic or machines, can be a very harmful type of pollution.
They can make people feel more stressed, have trouble sleeping, and even
cause heart problems. _①__
City sounds are also making life difficult for some animals, for example,
the funnel-weaving spiders.
_②_ Funnel-weaving spiders make special webs that are not sticky. They
wait in their webs for bugs. Then, they quickly move to bite. To do this, the
spider needs to feel the vibrations(震动) right away when an insect touches its
web. But their webs often stick to things like trees, rocks and buildings. These objects act like
highways for vibrations caused by environmental noise like traffic. If there’s too much noise around,
it can be difficult for the spider to notice the insects.

{#{QQABQQSQogCAAAIAAQgCQQFoCkCQkAEAAQoOhEAcMAABSRFABAA=}#}
_③_ Scientists notice city spiders making changes in their webs. The spiders adapt (适应) to
noise by creating thicker webs with stronger silk and more connection points. Think of it like how
we hang thick curtains to reduce traffic noise. Spiders just improve their webs instead! These
designs act like natural noise-canceling headphones(降噪耳机), sending fewer vibrations to the
spider. As a result, the spider can better feel the vibrations that really matter. _④_
A team led by scientist Brandi Pessman at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln found out about
this clever change. Their study helps us learn more about how animals deal with environmental
noise. Humans might get better sound proofing ideas (隔音设计) from it too!
62. What does the word bugs in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. Insects. B. Problems. C. Interests. D. Chances.
63. How do city spiders adapt to noise
A. By leaving their webs. B. By moving to quieter areas.
C. By changing their ways of hunting. D. By building thicker and stronger webs.
64. Where should we put the sentence “But nature’s full of surprises!”
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
65. How might studying this change in spiders help humans
A. Teach humans how to make webs. B. Explain humans are cleverer than spiders.
C. Help humans make quieter houses. D. Help humans understand spiders better.

I often read about children living in the mountains of China. They don’t have enough
learning resources, especially for English. I believe English is not just a language—it also gives
people the chance to see the world differently. So I started thinking about what I could do for these
children.
Then, I came up with an idea: to make special English learning material! More than10
classmates joined me, and we started a club called “Out of Mountains”.
Our English materials have three parts: listening, reading and writing. We decided to publish
them every month and send them to children by email. We also built a website so children could
get information more easily. Each of us worked on one part, such as writing content, designing
layouts, making illustrations and developing the website. To make the learning process more fun,
we chose interesting topics for kids, like holidays.
The hardest part was finding the children. I contacted schools in Liangshan, Sichuan. I also
reached out to children through some WeChat official accounts. I felt nervous talking to them and
was afraid of being turned down, but I did my best to share our ideas.
In the end, we got the readers we had hoped for. Every time a parent emailed us saying, “my
child really liked the story”, it gave us the strength to keep going. I hope our small acts can help
give these kids a better future.

The girls got to the lake at around 2 p.m. After they parked their bikes, Amy handed Joyce paper and pencils. Then they both began to draw pictures of the ducks. Five years ago, Sandy’s grandma and grandpa both turned 65. They wanted a change. So they sold their bakery and apartment in the city. Then they moved to a house in the countryside. During summer vacation that year, Sandy visited them for a week. That visit was boring at first. Sandy loved using the internet and watching TV. But her grandma and grandpa’s house didn’t have internet or a TV. Sandy soon found other things to do. With her grandpa, she went for walks every morning. With her grandma, she baked pies every afternoon. In the evening, they played cards together. In the end, Sandy really enjoyed her visit. After that, she visited them every summer vacation. And she still does now.
