It was a hot day in early September. “Write about summer vacation,” Mrs. Brown gave her class a writing task. She was a strict, older woman. “Be as creative as you can. But,” Mrs. Brown added, as she always did, “make sure you use proper spelling and grammar.”
Jim didn’t want to write a stupid article about his summer vacation. So he gave up on the task and wrote what he wanted to. Not an article at all but a short story--science fiction. It was about a distant planet that didn’t have summer-it was spring all the time. And it didn’t have vacations, either. The aliens on the planet worked 24 hours a day.
The next morning, he handed in the story but soon he felt regretful. He even couldn’t sleep well. In English class, he saw Mrs. Brown looked at him with a strange look in her strict eyes for long. “I’m in trouble,” Jim thought, staring at the floor.
Mrs. Brown said, “Almost everyone in class wrote an article about his or her summer vacation... Almost everyone.”
“This is bad,” Jim thought. “I’m getting an F. I know it.”
“But,” the teacher continued, “one student decided he didn’t feel like doing that.”
“This is worse than an F... I’m in a note-to-the-parents situation now,” Jim couldn’t help thinking.
“All of your articles read as if they were written in your sleep. Just one of you had the courage to be as imaginative as I asked you to be. Jim Martin is the only one who got an A on the assignment (作业). Now I’m going to ask him to come up here and read his story to you as an example of thinking independently and being creative.” Then, she added strictly, “Though he should have a little more attention to proper spelling and grammar.”
Jim walked to the front of the classroom, as if he were climbing to the top of Mount Everest or were the first person to step onto the surface of Mars.
What a small thing really, he now reflected as he walked through the crowded hallway, just a single assignment. But what a difference that moment had made to him!

Artificial intelligence (AI) is technology that helps computers to think, learn and create in a way similar to humans. The last year has seen a lot of great developments of new AI apps and tools.
ChatGPT and Microsoft CoPilot are two examples of Al chat-bots (聊天机器人) that you can have a conversation with. You could ask them about a subject that you’re studying at school, or a part of history that you’re interested in, or tips for good places to visit on holiday.
Teachers might be able to use these apps to create lesson plans to use in the classroom but they have other uses, too, like improving creativity. For example, the Al could help invent characters and write stories.
There are also “text-to-image” (文本到图像) AIs, like DALL-E and Midjourney, which can create pictures for you based on your ideas. For instance, you could ask them to make a photo of a cheese-eating space dog having a picnic on the Moon, or a painting of the Mona Lisa as if she were a child, or a crayon drawing of a goat playing football on the playground.
“Text-to-music” AIs like Splash Pro, Cassette and Stable Audio work in a similar way, turning your words into music. You could ask the AI to make a fast pop song for your gaming video, or a slow song that helps you concentrate on homework.
Creative AI technology is developing very fast, but there are some concerns. Some writers, artists and musicians are worried that these AIs are being “trained” using their work without their permission. There are also fears that AI could be used for bad reasons: to spread false information or make songs that someone could pretend are by famous musicians.
AI may help us a lot if we use it in a proper way. One thing that’s important to know is that these AI tools are not designed for young people to use alone. If you want to use or explore them, make sure you do it with an adult.
