There was a gardener who looked after his garden with great care. To water his flowers,he used two buckets(水桶).One was a shiny and new bucket. The other was a very old and dilapidated one, which had seen many years of service, but was now past its best.
Every morning, the gardener would fill up the two buckets. Then he would carry them along the path, one on each side,to the flowerbeds. The new bucket was very proud of itself. It could carry a full bucket of water without a single drop spilled. The old bucket felt very ashamed(惭愧的)because of its holes: before it reached the flowerbeds, much water had leaked(渗漏)along the path.
Sometimes the new bucket would say,"See how capable I am! How good it is that the gardener has me water the flowers every day! I don’t know why he still uses you. What a waste of space you are!"
And all that the old bucket could say was,"I know I am not very useful, but I can only do my best I am happy that the gardener still finds a little bit of use in me ,at least.’’
One day,the gardener heard that kind of conversation After watering the flowers as usual,he said,"You both have done your work very well. Now I am going to carry you back, and I want you to look carefully along the path."
Then the two buckets did so. All along the path, they noticed,on the side where the new bucket was carried, there was just bare earth;on the other side where the old bucket was carried, there was a joyous row of wild flowers, leading all the way to the garden.

Inside an amazing show center in Beijing, a two-armed robot is busy making sugar paintings. Its smooth movements attract a crowd of visitors. The robot is acting as a “skilled worker” of this traditional art of Beijing. But the machine also acts as both a witness (见证) to and a guide for the increasing mix of fields of knowledge that come from different places. This mix challenges the limits of time and geography.
At the show, hundreds of experts from home and abroad are considering the relationship between cultural heritage and new technologies. For many, the promotion of traditional culture is one of the areas in which technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) can play a key role.
“AI helps pass on culture,” said Guo Chunchao, head of Tencent’s Hunyuan Text to 3D project. Yu Minjing, a teacher at Tianjin University, agreed with him. She led her team to use VR technology to conduct a firework show and make traditional Hanfu clothes. With AI, the inheritance (传承) of traditional culture can solve the limits of space and geography, which helps traditional skills that used to be taught by talking, to be spread more widely and better, she said.
The mix of AI technology with VR,3D and other technologies has also helped create cloud walking-around experiences, attracting young people to traditional culture, Guo said.
However, some experts warned that while technology is important for preservation, it’s even more important to think about the people in the process.
Renata Sansone, from Italy, said that some archaeological sites are very difficult for everybody to understand, but the use of technologies may make a difference in getting more people interested and playing their part in preservation. Many Chinese experts agree with her. Yu Minjing thinks that saving and passing on cultural relics should focus on people. How much people like and accept it is very important for protecting cultural relics well.
Guo holds a similar view, calling for schools, businesses, and culture groups to work together. Each group should try their best to help make cultural relics digital.
8. Why is the robot mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To introduce the challenges the robot faces.
B. To call for people to protect traditional cultures.
C. To praise sugar paintings’ role in cultural protection.
D. To show a new function of technology in traditional culture.
9. What is the main reason for Yu Minjing’s team using AI and VR technologies
A. Solving space problems in culture sharing.
B. Making new technologies develop well.
C. Attracting more young people to their show.
D. Taking the place of old teaching methods.
10. Which of the following statements would Renata Sansone agree with
A. Schools will play a key role in cultural preservation.
B. Archaeological sites are best explored with technology.
C. It’s important to make the public join in cultural preservation.
D. Cloud walking-around has become a major way to experience culture.
11. What’s the best title for the text
A. The Popular Rise of Robot Artists
B. The Role of Technology in Cultural Protection
C. The Influence of AI on Cultural Exchange
D. The Future Development of Traditional Skills
D
Going to outer space is a little like going camping. You have to carry with you all the food and equipment you need for your trip, so your food can’t be too heavy or hard to prepare. Plus, there are no refrigerators to keep food cold and fresh. Food with all the water dried out is lightweight and doesn’t spoil(变坏). So, many space foods are dried on Earth and stored in special packets.
On Earth, gravity is the force that keeps your feet on the ground and your sandwich on your plate. But there’s no gravity in space. To keep food from floating(漂浮) away, astronauts on the Space Shuttle attach the packets to a special tray(托盘). The tray can be fixed to a wall or to the astronaut’s lap. To prepare their food, astronauts use liquid forms of salt and pepper. The liquid sticks to the food better. Regular salt and pepper would float away, maybe up an astronaut’s nose.
Liquids float right out of cups and glasses, though. So astronauts drink everything from a small bag with a straw(吸管) that can be closed. Astronauts say that most space foods taste pretty good. Some, such as apples and pudding, are the same as the foods you eat on Earth.
Astronauts eat tortillas instead of bread because they make fewer crumbs(碎屑). Floating crumbs could get stuck in equipment or an astronaut’s eye.
Your body uses food in space the same way it does on Earth. Your body must deal with waste in space too. During takeoff and landing, astronauts can’t leave their seats to go to the bathroom. They wear diapers(尿布) under their spacesuits instead. The Space Shuttle has a bathroom the size of a small closet. The toilet has bars that keep astronauts from floating away. A strong flow of air is used instead of water to flush waste down the toilet.
12. Why do astronauts use liquid forms of salt and pepper to prepare food
A. Liquid doesn’t spoil.
B. Liquid is convenient to use in space.
C Liquid is lightweight.
D. Astronauts are in great need of water.
13. What do astronauts think of space foods
A. Most of them taste pleasant.
B. They are mostly fruits.
C. Most of them are rather cold.
D. They contain too little meat.
14. We can infer from the passage that astronauts ___________.
A. drink from cups and glasses
B. always wear diapers in space
C. can move freely during landing
D. must pay attention to crumbs in space
15. What is the passage mainly about
A. Astronaut’s hard life in space.
B. How astronauts go to the bathroom.
C. The various foods astronauts eat in space.
D. How astronauts eat and deal with waste in space.

The emergency doctor stood at the foot of my husband’s hospital bed, holding the test results and a diagnosis--Leukemia. He said to my husband, “We’ll move you to the leukemia floor. You’ll be here at least a month.
A month! How were we going to struggle for a month It was March. The end of a school year was approaching. My days with my high school students were limited. How could I prepare four weeks of lessor plans and hand them over to a substitute teacher A month! Could we afford being in the hospital that long! Our insurance was good, but we’d still have to pay our part of the medical expenses. My meals wouldn’t be covered, and parking was so expensive! My head couldn’t do the math. I drove home, filled with countless worries.
The next morning, I packed the car with everything needed for our hospital stay and headed to school to see my students, Because we live in a small community, they would have heard about my husband’s diagnosis. I would assure them that my husband would be fine, and that I would be fine, too. I’d encourage them to be their best selves for the substitute -and for me- while I was on family leave.
When I entered my classroom, the chatter stopped. I could feel my students assess me as I walked to the front of the room, so I put on a smile and continued to my podium(讲台). Sitting on top was a green envelope with “Mrs. Sargent” written on it. I looked over the frames of my glasses at twenty-eight faces some smiling, some trying to resist. “What is this ” I asked. 【读后续写答案】Paragraph 1: When I opened the envelope, coins and dollar bills fell out—fives, tens, twenties. At that moment, my throat tightened with emotion and I understood the meaning behind their excited faces. An overwhelming sense of pride from them washed over me. Should I take it My brain was spinning fast. Seeing the money that the students raised, I couldn’t help but wonder another question: How had these kids collected so much money I could even imagine the countless hours they had spent working odd jobs, determined to save every penny to help me. Therefore, deep within my heart, there was a firm voice,“I can’t take it”.
Paragraph 2: As an adult in the room, I felt guilty and unwilling to accent these teenagers’ hard-earned money; but I decided to accent it. I tightly held up the cash and a sense of mixed feeling choked my words. With tears of gratitude welling up in my eyes, I hugged each student tightly. More important than the envelope was the kindness in their hearts and the lesson they had taught themselves: how wonderful it feels to meet someone’s needs and to make a difference. Through their small act of kindness, these teenagers have shown me their growth and they are not ignorant children, but young individuals with kindness in their hearts.
