A Special Show Held in San Francisco
A special show, Qi Baishi: Inspiration in Ink (水墨灵韵), brings the beauty of Chinese ink art to Americans. Held at San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum on Dec 12, 2024, the show displays nearly 50 paintings and letters by Qi Baishi (1864-1957), one of China’s most famous 20th-century painters. It runs until April 9, 2025 and will later go to Boston.
Qi is best known for painting nature’s small wonders-shrimps (虾), birds, chickens and fish. His works show the simple joy of life, whether it’s a tiny insect, or an opening flower. His paintings catch millions of art fans’ eyes by bringing back memories of the countryside and their hometowns. “His works are special and he mostly praised the energy of nature and life’s strength through his art,” says Du Yuxin from the Beijing Fine Art Academy.
Born into a village in Hunan, Qi started as a carpenter (木匠). It was really a hard situation then. But just like those small lives he painted, their strong wish for life pushed him to keep going. He taught himself painting and later moved to Beijing to learn art. “He was sincere and down-to-earth, painting what he saw and felt,” Du explains. Finally, he became really good at ink painting, bringing traditional skills and his own style together.
The show isn’t just about looking at art. One popular part is Letters from Baishi. Hundreds of envelopes (信封) hang in the air. Inside, there is a letter and a copy of Qi’s artworks. Visitors can take one as a souvenir (纪念品). Next to it is the “Time-travel Postbox,” where people can write letters to Qi. Visitor Smith wrote, “Thank you for creating your art. It helps me remember this is where we come from.”
Qi’s works were first shown in San Francisco in 1960, and now this new show continues to bridge cultures and gets people around the world to have a better understanding of Chinese art.

My Role Model
Everyone has a role model, so do I. My role model is Huang Xuhua, known as the "Father of China' s Nuclear Submarines".
I admire him because he spent over 30 years working secretly on submarines without telling his family. Even when facing technical difficulties, he never gave up. What touches me most is that he once said, "I'm willing to be silent for the country's future." His words show his deep love for our nation.
From him, I've learned two important things. First, we should be brave enough to face challenges, just as he did during research. Second, we must always put the country's needs first. Whenever I feel tired in study, I think of his spirit and keep going.
