I was fortunate to be raised in a traditional Karuk family — practicing dipnet fishing, renewal ceremonies, and cultural fire in harmony with nature’s cycles. When I was growing up, my dad would return from the fishery with a truck full of salmon (鲑鱼). We’d stay up late processing fish and hanging pieces in the smokehouse. As Karuk Va’araaras, we are salmon people, river people, and fix-the-world people. Our relationship with salmon is mutual; as long as we fish, the salmon will journey upriver to provide for us.
In 2000, the Klamath River turned bright green with harmful algae (海藻) as PacifiCorp sought a 50-year license renewal (许可证续期) for its hydroelectric dams. Built in the 20th century, the dams caused severe environmental harm. During the 2001 drought, native communities called for federal action to save the river. Initially, the Bureau of Reclamation limited water deliveries to protect endangered fish, but farmers, fearing crop failures due to water shortages, successfully pressured the Bush administration to change the decision.
In 2002, summer heat and low river flows led to a massive fish kill — 34,000 dead salmon lying on the Klamath’s banks. The smell still stays in our collective memory.
As the dams came up for Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) review, we made statements in hearings. Around a fire, we resolved to fight for dam removal, forming the Klamath Justice Coalition (KJC). Over 20 years, we protested at shareholders’ meetings, and gathered thousands under the slogan: “Undam the Klamath, Bring the Salmon Home!”
On November 17, 2022, FERC approved the removal of the dams. Watching the Klamath River flow freely for the first time in over a century is profound. Our Creator’s call to action in 2002 inspired a movement, empowering a new generation of protectors. As the river heals, so do we. Bring the salmon home indeed.
24.Which of the following best summarizes the relationship between the Karuk tribe and the Klamath River
A.Food and identity source. B.Boundary between groups.
C.River health over tribe needs. D.Unconditional protection of ecosystems.
25.What immediate consequence followed the Bush administration’s policy change in 2001
A.The disastrous fish kill in 2002.
B.PacifiCorp’s license renewal for dams.
C.The formation of the Klamath Justice Coalition.
D.The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s review.
26.Which action directly contributed to the final approval of dam removal
A.KJC’s conservation policy. B.Farmers’ withdrawal of protests.
C.FERC’s review process. D.Karuk’s traditional ceremonies.
27.What can we learn from this story
A.Many hands make light work. B.Slow and steady wins the race.
C.Constant dropping wears the stone. D.He who plants a tree plants hope.
In today’s digital age, people are changing the way they communicate. More and more people now prefer texting over talking. In fact, a global survey in 17 countries shows that around 40% of adults choose texting as their favorite way to stay connected. In China, WeChat users send over 45 billion messages daily. This growing habit reflects how digital tools are reshaping our social behavior.
This shift has even created a new type of person — the textrovert. A textrovert is someone who may seem shy in person but becomes very expressive through texting. The term first appeared in online slang in 2008. Just as there are introverts (内向的人) and extroverts (外向的人), a textrovert is considered a new personality type in the digital world.
Why do so many people feel safer texting First, it allows time to think and edit before replying. Second, it removes the pressure of speaking face-to-face. As a result, some students may appear confident and expressive in texts but remain quiet or withdrawn in real-life settings.
Although texting is convenient, it can also bring stress. Waiting for a reply can cause textpectation — a feeling of nervous anticipation. If a message gets no answer, people may experience textiety — the worry that they are being ignored. Without facial expressions or tone, it’s easy to misunderstand each other, especially when discussing serious topics like money or relationships.
In more serious cases, people may become too dependent on their phones. If they cannot use them, they may suffer from nomophobia — the fear of being without a mobile device. Others experience phantom vibration syndrome, where they feel their phone vibrating when it hasn’t. These conditions remind us that while texting has benefits, it can also lead to emotional stress and unhealthy habits.
Still, texting helps people build online friendships and stay in touch. However, experts remind us that texting cannot replace face-to-face warmth. A real voice or a smile can express emotions that text messages cannot. Experts suggest setting regular “tech-free hours” each day to build healthier communication habits. Maintaining a balance between digital and real-life interaction is essential.

A.Life in a Text-Driven Teen World B.Texting: Comfort at a Cost

Researchers have recently discovered that gut microbiome (肠道微生物群) — bacteria that grow within our body — helps the brain build important social skills.
According to a paper published in PLOS Biology in November, zebra fish were used as research subjects to test how a lack of microbiome could alter social skills. Zebra fish are social animals as even 2-week-old fish starts to hang out in groups of 4 to 12.
The experiment started with making a group of fish “germ-free (无菌)” through their diet. The other group were injected with a healthy mix of gut bacteria. About 15 days later, the second group began swimming in groups while the “germ-free” group “shockingly, didn’t,” Judith Eisen, a co-author of the new research, said to Quanta Magazine.
The team then examined the fish’s brains, discovering obvious differences between the two groups. The ones who lacked the gut microbiome had more interconnections among the neurons (神经元) in their brains in charge of social behavior. It also led to fewer microglia (小胶质细胞), the neural immune cells that help clean the brain’s unwanted neurons. With less microglia to clear the brain’s neurons, social neurons were seen to have overgrown. This made the fish more cautious in social situations.
Scientists assumed that the bacteria could release a special chemical that crosses the blood-brain barrier to reach the brain directly. Or, the immune cells might move between the gut and the brain, sending messages. Although the experiments were only on fish, the findings can theoretically be applied to humans. The team wishes to explore how gut microbiome affects the human brain in the future, which may lead to solutions to mental health problems.
Perhaps many people who claim that they have “social phobia” can blame their guts. However, social phobia, or social anxiety disorder, can be a serious illness if ignored. According to the National Health Service in the UK, it is more than shyness but instead a constant fear of social situations. Patients may experience panic attacks which are an overwhelming fear and anxiety that last for a few minutes
32.What did the experiment aim to find out
A.The neural structures of zebra fish. B.The reproductive habits of social animals.
C.The causes of zebra fish’s social behavior. D.The impact of microbiome on social behavior.
33.What can we learn about “germ-free” fish from the passage
A.They have more neural immune cells. B.They are less active in social interactions.
C.Their brains have fewer unwanted neurons. D.Their social neurons are loosely connected.
34.What will be the potential application of the finding
A.Dealing with depression. B.Managing brain disease.
C.Treating an eating disorder. D.Increasing social neurons.
35.Which statement would the author probably agree with
A.Social phobia can be cured by a special chemical.
B.People should attach great importance to social phobia.
C.The gut microbiome is the primary cause of social phobia.
D.Social phobia is simply a reflection of people’s personalities.
Have you ever felt that life is already planned out for you — go to school, get a job, get married, raise a child 36 However, the idea of “escaping the Matrix” is not about leaving reality, but about waking up from a system (inspired by the film The Matrix《黑客帝国》) that quietly shapes how we think, choose, and live. It means seeing through social rules and media influence, and making choices that truly belong to you.
A good first step is learning to notice these unseen influences around you. 37 They often push certain ideas while hiding others. When you begin to ask, “Do I really believe this, or am I just repeating it ”, you start to take back control. This moment of doubt may seem small, but it can change the way you see everything.
However, questioning is only the beginning. 38 Reading about philosophy, history, or different cultures allows you to compare what you’ve learned with what you’ve always believed. But simple knowledge isn’t enough — true freedom comes when you see how much of your thinking was never really your own. This kind of shift can feel like a personal revolution.
That said, clear thinking is hard to achieve if you’re always online. Many apps are built to keep you watching, liking, and scrolling, not thinking. Limiting your screen time or deleting certain apps might feel uncomfortable at first. 39
Real escape isn’t about being alone, though. It’s about finding meaningful connections that aren’t built on social pressure. Talk with people who challenge your ideas. Be present when you listen. Notice how you feel and what you need. 40 And the more real your connections become, the less power the Matrix has over you.
A.Only in silence can you hear your own voice.
B.Filling your mind with new knowledge is also important.
C.Many people move from one step to the next without asking why.
D.Some people believe escaping the Matrix means living without any technology.
E.Moreover, connecting with others online can also offer meaningful relationships.
F.This kind of authentic contact stands in sharp contrast to the roles we’re told to play.
G.Much of what we believe is shaped by headlines, trends, and the voices we hear online.

I fell in love with the minister’s son the winter I turned fourteen. He wasn’t Chinese. For Christmas, I wished for this golden-haired boy Robert and a perfect American nose.
When I learned that my parents had invited the minister’s family to our Christmas-Eve dinner, I panicked. What would Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christmas, of my noisy relatives with unfashionable manners, of a table without roast turkey but full of Chinese dishes
On Christmas Eve, my mother seemed determined to worked extra hard. The kitchen was filled with the smell of raw seafood and ginger. A slippery fish with big eyes was ready to be cooked in oil.
Soon the doorbell rang again and again as the minister’s family and all my relatives crowded in, arms full of gifts and loud conversation. Robert muttcred “hello”, and I pretended I did not notice him.
Dinner made me feel even worse. My grandmother loudly slurped (啜饮着) her hot-and-sour soup, a sound that always meant “delicious” in our family. When my aunt placed a plate of chicken feet on the table, Robert’s little brother pointed and whispered, “Those look like toes!” My mother proudly served a dish of stinky tofu, whose strong smell filled the room instantly. Robert’s father pushed the plate away, shaking his head, while my cousin took a big bite and said, “It smells bad, but tastes great!”
Just as tension peaked, my father beamed and plunged his chopsticks into the steamed fish. Expertly, he lifted a shining piece of the tender belly and placed it onto Robert’s plate. “The best part for our guest!” he boomed. Then my father slid his chopsticks just below the fish’s eye, lifted out the soft cheek, and dropped it into my bowl. “Amy, your favorite,” he announced. I wanted to disappear.
Robert was looking down at his plate with a reddened face and I was stunned into silence for the rest of the night, certain this Christmas Eve would haunt my memories forever.

4.B
W: Hey, Asher. I’m going to Myrtle Beach this summer holiday. Do you want to come with me
M: I wish I could, but I have to work in a coffee shop as a part-time waiter. You’d better make a reservation before you go. I heard the hotels near the beach would be fully booked during the summer.
5.A

W: Don’t worry. The weatherman said it would be sunny in the afternoon.
6.A 7.C
M: Brrr, why is it a bit cold I’m sure the weatherman said that today would be warmer. He has never got it right, has he
W: I wouldn’t say that. He gets it right most of the time, but we only remember the times when he is wrong. Look! The sun has come out. It’s going to be a fine day, I believe. Are you in the mood for an outdoor activity There’s only a 10-minute drive to reach the foot of the mountain.
M: Well, I hope you’re right. In that case, I should take off my woolen hat and scarf.
W: Yeah, that’ll probably be the right decision, because we have a hike ahead of us.
8.A 9.C
M: Shall we stop by the post office on the way to the restaurant I need to post a few letters and a parcel.
W: Certainly. In fact, I’m going to post something as well. I promised my sister some dictionaries, and I’ve nearly finished a letter to my brother who is studying in Japan.
M: Where is your sister now I haven’t seen her for half a year.
W: She’s teaching in a rural middle school in China, after three or four years in Russia. It’s not so easy to get English-English dictionaries in remote rural areas. Give me five minutes, and then I’ll quickly finish the letter and wrap it up.
M: Fine. I’ll read this sports magazine while waiting. Is it yours
W: No. It’s my mother’s. She’s a sports fan. That’s the only difference between my mother and me.

W: You’ve been most kind. So what can I do to help you
M: Ah, yes. As you can see, I badly need a haircut, but I’m new here and I don’t know any barbershops.
W: There are no barbershops around here. The nearest one might be about a 15-minute car ride away. Besides, even the simplest cut will cost you about 30 dollars. If you just want something simple, I can do it for you. I used to cut my little brothers’ hair when I lived at home in Birmingham.
M: Wow, it sounds like I can save some money. Okay, please help me.

W: But I live here. It’s my parking space.
M: Could you please park outside the community for a few hours before we finish
W: If I park it on the street, police officers will give me a parking ticket.
M: OK, then I have another suggestion: You can leave the car in the parking space over there. If the owner of the place shows up, I will call you to move your car. What do you think
W: Well, I don’t really want to be disturbed. I have an idea: I give you the car key, and you can move it if need be. Just make sure it’s parked here when you’re done.
M: OK. Where should I drop off the key afterwards
W: You can give it to the doorkeeper. I’ll pick it up tomorrow morning.

根据第一段中“When I was growing up, my dad would return from the fishery with a truck full of salmon (鲑鱼). We’d stay up late processing fish and hanging pieces in the smokehouse. As Karuk Va’araaras, we are salmon people, river people, and fix-the-world people. Our relationship with salmon is mutual; as long as we fish, the salmon will journey upriver to provide for us. 故选A。
根据第二段中“Initially, the Bureau of Reclamation limited water deliveries to protect endangered fish, but farmers, fearing crop failures due to water shortages, successfully pressured the Bush administration to change the decision. (起初,垦务局为保护濒危鱼类限制了供水,但农民们因担心缺水导致农作物歉收,成功迫使布什政府改变了这一决定)”以及第三段“In 2002, summer heat and low river flows led to a massive fish kill — 34,000 dead salmon lying on the Klamath’s banks. (2002年,夏季的高温和河流流量的减少导致了大规模的鱼类死亡——3.4万条死鲑鱼躺在克拉玛斯河的河岸上)”可知,2001年布什政府政策改变后,随即2002 年那场灾难性的鱼类死亡事件发生了。故选A。
根据第四段中“As the dams came up for Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) review, we made statements in hearings. (当这些水坝提交给联邦能源管理委员会(FERC)审查时,我们在听证会上发表了声明)”以及最后一段中“On November 17, 2022, FERC approved the removal of the dams. (2022年11月17日,联邦能源管理委员会(FERC)批准了拆除这些水坝的方案)”可知,FERC的审查过程直接促成了最终批准拆除大坝。故选C。
27.推理判断题。根据全文内容,卡鲁克部落等通过长期不懈的努力,最终促成了大坝的拆除和河流的恢复。这体现了“水滴石穿”的精神,即持之以恒的努力最终会取得成功。C选项“Constant dropping wears the stone. (水滴石穿)”符合故事传达的精神。故选C。

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了如今人们交流方式的变化,更多人倾向于发短信交流,分析了原因和带来的问题,还给出了平衡线上线下交流的建议。
28.主旨大意题。根据第一段中“In today’s digital age, people are changing the way they communicate. More and more people now prefer texting over talking. In fact, a global survey in 17 countries shows that around 40% of adults choose texting as their favorite way to stay connected. In China, WeChat users send over 45 billion messages daily. This growing habit reflects how digital tools are reshaping our social behavior.(在当今的数字时代,人们正在改变他们的交流方式。现在越来越多的人更喜欢发短信而不是交谈。事实上,一项对17个国家的全球调查显示,大约40%的成年人选择发短信作为他们最喜欢的联系方式。在中国,微信用户每天发送超过450亿条信息。这种日益增长的习惯反映了数字工具如何重塑我们的社会行为)”可知,第一段主要介绍了发信息交流这一现象的流行。故选A项。
根据划线词所在句“As a result, some students may appear confident and expressive in texts but remain quiet or withdrawn in real life settings.(因此,一些学生在短信中可能显得自信且善于表达,但在现实生活场景中却保持安静或……)”
根据最后一段中“Experts suggest setting regular ‘tech free hours’ each day to build healthier communication habits. Maintaining a balance between digital and real life interaction is essential.(专家建议每天设定固定的‘无科技时间’来养成更健康的交流习惯。保持数字交流和现实生活交流之间的平衡至关重要)”可知,作者建议要有远离科技产品的时间,要保持数字交流和现实生活交流之间的平衡。所以“Turn off phones for family time.(为了家庭时光关掉手机)”符合这一建议。故选A项。
通读全文,根据第三段中“Why do so many people feel safer texting First, it allows time to think and edit before replying. Second, it removes the pressure of speaking face to face.(为什么这么多人觉得发短信更安全呢 首先,它允许在回复之前有时间思考和编辑。其次,它消除了面对面交谈的压力)”可知,短信交流有让人感到舒适的优点。又根据第四段中“Although texting is convenient, it can also bring stress. Waiting for a reply can cause textpectation — a feeling of nervous anticipation. If a message gets no answer, people may experience textiety — the worry that they are being ignored. Without facial expressions or tone, it’s easy to misunderstand each other, especially when discussing serious topics like money or relationships.(虽然发短信很方便,但它也会带来压力。等待回复会导致“短信期待”——一种紧张的期待感。如果一条信息没有得到回复,人们可能会经历“短信焦虑”——担心自己被忽视。没有面部表情或语气,很容易误解对方,尤其是在讨论像金钱或人际关系这样的严肃话题时)”可知,短信交流也有代价。所以“Texting: Comfort at a Cost(短信交流:有代价的舒适)”能概括文章内容,体现短信交流的利弊,是文章的最佳标题。故选B项。

34.推理判断题。根据第五段中的“The team wishes to explore how gut microbiome affects the human brain in the future, which may lead to solutions to mental health problems. (研究小组希望未来探索肠道微生物群如何影响人类大脑,这可能会导致心理健康问题的解决方案。)”及最后一段中的“However, social phobia, or social anxiety disorder, can be a serious illness if ignored. (然而,社交恐惧症或社交焦虑症,如果被忽视,可能是一种严重的疾病。)”可知,这一发现的潜在应用可能是处理抑郁症等心理健康问题。故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“However, social phobia, or social anxiety disorder, can be a serious illness if ignored. According to the National Health Service in the UK, it is more than shyness but instead a constant fear of social situations. Patients may experience panic attacks which are an overwhelming fear and anxiety that last for a few minutes. (然而,社交恐惧症或社交焦虑症,如果被忽视,可能是一种严重的疾病。根据英国国家医疗服务体系的说法,它不仅仅是害羞,而是对社交场合的持续恐惧。患者可能会经历恐慌发作,这是一种持续几分钟的压倒性恐惧和焦虑。)”可知,作者可能会同意人们应该高度重视社交恐惧症。故选B项。

(只有在寂静中,你才能听到自己的声音。)”中的“silence”对应“limiting your screen time”,“hear your own voice”体现了减少网络干扰后对自我的认知,符合语境。故选A项。
40.根据上文“Real escape isn’t about being alone, though. It’s about finding meaningful connections that aren’t built on social pressure. Talk with people who challenge your ideas. 56.考查冠词。句意:最近,美国网红IShowSpeed通过他正在进行的中国之旅,在中国社交媒体上引起了轰动。influencer为可数名词单数,空前无限定词,此处表示“一个美国网红”,为泛指,且US是以辅音音素开头的单词,所以用不定冠词a。故填a。

67.Paragraph 1: After the guests left, I locked myself in the room. I sank onto my bed, burying my face in the pillow to muffle the humiliating echoes of the dinner— the slurping soup, the stinky tofu’s odor, Robert’s flushed cheeks when Father placed that fish on his plate…Through the window, the faint glow of neighborhood Christmas lights filtered in, but they seemed to mock my shame instead of bringing warmth. “To Robert, I’ll always be the weird girl.” Tears pricked my eyes as I envisioned him laughing with his family about our chaotic dinner. I wished I could erase the entire evening from my life along with my “betraying” Chinese nose, which could never live up to the “perfection” I’d longed for.
Paragraph 2: “Amy. May I come in ” Mom called gently outside the room. I didn’t answer, but Mom creaked the door open, carrying my favorite tea whose scent calmed my nerves. She sat beside me, shoulder brushing mine as she did in my childhood nightmares. “Father gave Robert the fish’s tender belly—our family’s best for guests—and you the delicate cheek” she said, pressing the warm cup into my hands. “Love isn’t about turkey or perfect noses,” she added, swirling the tea, “but sharing what’s precious, even with a strong smell.” Staring at the ripples, I realized Father’s chopsticks had spoken a language of care—one Robert might not grasp, but one I was starting to cherish. Slowly, I took a sip in relief. The flavor was familiar, tender. Not shame. Home.
