When I was young, each of the seven children in our family worked in my father’s store. We started working by doing small jobs like cleaning, tidying shelves and packing, and later graduated (升级) to serve customers (顾客). As we worked and watched, we learned that work was about more than living and selling things.
One day, I was tidying the toy area. A little boy, five or six years old, came in. He was wearing an old brown coat, and his hair and shoes were dirty. The boy looked poor to me--too poor to buy anything. He looked around the toys, picked up some of them, and then put them back. At that time, Dad walked over the boy. He smiled and asked the boy what he could do for him. The boy said he was looking for a birthday present to buy for his brother. Dad told him to take his time and look around. He did.
After about 20 minutes, the little boy carefully picked up a toy plane, walked up to my father and said, “How much for this, Sir ” “How much do you have ” Dad asked. The little boy held out his hand and opened it. He counted the coins and said, “27 cents”. The price of the toy plane was US$3.98. “That was just about do it,” Dad said softly. When I came home from my journey, I felt a great joy because the place I had visited was so nice and fruitful (硕果累累的). It was much better than the place I had chosen as my “home”.
“Maybe I can move my home there. It’s such a good place on this island,” I thought to myself.
I had this idea stuck in my head (停留在脑海里) for a few days. But after I thought it over, I found there was still a problem. After all, I was now living near the sea. Something good was more likely (可能的) to happen to me here. Maybe some other people would come here with the same bad luck as mine. It was very unlikely, but if I just stayed hidden away in the middle of the island, I’d be trapping myself and lose all chance of anything happening. Finally, I decided it was best not to move from where I was.
However, I was so enamored of that place that I spent much of my time there for the rest of the month. I even built myself a small “house” there and surrounded (包围) it at a distance (从远处) with a strong, high fence (栅栏). I felt very safe lying there, sometimes spending two or three nights in a row. One day, I found the grapes I had hung up perfectly dried. Indeed, they were excellent raisins (葡萄干) of the sun. I began to take them down from the trees. I spent my days in the comfort of my places and did everything to enjoy myself.
One day, I counted the marks on my post and realized that I had been on the island for three hundred and sixty-five days. I regarded this day as a solemn (庄严的) anniversary (周年纪念日) and needed a celebration. Soon after that day, my ink started running low. I could no longer keep a diary. I decided to write down only the most important events on the island.

Did you know that trees can “talk” with each other They “talk” not to be helpful, but because they can’t help it, a new study said.
It may look like each tree in a forest stands alone. But they’re connected (连接) underground by mycorrhizal networks (菌根网络). These networks are made of very small threads of fungi (真菌丝).
Between 80 to 90 percent of trees are on this “wood-wide web” (木联网). Earlier studies show that trees use it to warn others about danger, according to The Conversation. For example, when bugs (虫子) come to eat the leaves of a tree, the tree can send chemical signals (化学信号) through the networks. Other trees then pick up the messages and make special juice to keep the bugs away.
However, a new study led by the UK’s University of Oxford says something different. After running tests on math models, scientists found that trees do not actually get anything from being nice. They may be better off sending fake warnings to cheat nearby plants. This is because trees fight for sunlight, water and food all the time. So, it does not make sense (讲得通) for a tree to help others when it is in trouble.
So why do they send signals Scientists think there may be two reasons. First, trees can’t help sending messages, just like we sometimes can’t stop our faces from turning red. Second, the fungi may be the ones spreading the signals because they need plants to live.

③Bugs come to eat the leaves of a tree. ④Other trees receive the messages.

At 13 years old, Terrence Harvey from the US learned how cruel (残忍的) the world could be.
It started with his classmates calling him names. He tried to let it go but things got worse. One of them hit him, and somebody shared his secret online. He couldn’t run away from the laughter that followed him like a shadow.
Instead of taking revenge (报复), Harvey dealt with the problem in a different way.
Last year, he started a group called Cyber Bros Against Cyberbullying (网络霸凌). Their goal is to stop bullying and help people report it.
Also, Harvey helped write a book called Cyber Bros Against Cyberbullying: Good Guys Don’t Bully. It has prayers, puzzles, and stories to help kids stay safe on the internet. “It’s an organization where we stop bad people,” Harvey said.
Cyberbullying is becoming more of a problem in the US. A study found that almost half of American teenagers aged 13 to 17 have faced one of six types of cyberbullying at some point.
Harvey’s group now has two ambassadors (大使) —one in the Midwest and another in the South. They teach kids how to be safe when using the internet, and offer help to other young people dealing with bullying. By working together, they are sharing Harvey’s message for teenagers to know they are not alone.
