For over 60 years, NASA has been using Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS), a type of nuclear (原子能的) “battery”, to power spacecraft and enable them to travel to some of the darkest, coldest, and farthest reaches of our solar system. If you could plan an RPS-powered mission to any moon in our solar system, which moon would you choose to unlock its mysteries
K-12 students, your task is to plan a mission that uses RPS to get to a dark, dusty, or faraway moon in our solar system. NASA wants to know what you plan to explore, the discoveries you hope to make, and what your special power is to help you achieve mission success.
Your plan should address all three topics below:
●Dark, dusty, or distant mission destination: Tell us which moon your RPS-powered space mission will go to and describe your mission goal(s).
●RPS: Explain the importance and advantages of using RPS for this mission. Explain how this technology overcomes the challenges of extreme environments and destinations.
●Your power: NASA missions are also powered by people — from mission planning and development to designing, launching, and operating a spacecraft. Tell us what you think your unique power is and how your special power will help you achieve mission success. Your power could be a skill, personal characteristics, or your personal strength that is unique to you.
Every student who puts forward a plan will receive a digital certificate (证书) and an invitation to a virtual event with NASA experts, where students will learn about what powers the NASA workforce to dream big and explore. Three national finalists in each grade category (9 finalists total) will receive a particular virtual session with a NASA RPS expert.
21.Who are the competition intended for
A.NASA engineers. B.University professors.
C.Students in certain grades. D.Professional astronauts.
22.What must be included in the plans
A.A list of NASA’s past missions. B.A unique power and its application.
C.A detailed map of the solar system. D.A comparison of different power systems.
23.What will be offered to every student with a plan
A.A job offer from NASA.
B.A free trip to a space center.
C.A face-to-face meeting with NASA RPS expert.
D.A certificate and online event access.
A New York food bank was offered a large donation of fresh fish last month — but the gift came with a difficulty.
LocalCoho,a New York salmon (鲑鱼) farm that was closing, wanted to give 18,100kilograms of salmon to the Food Bank of Central New York. The high-quality meat could feed thousands of families. However, the gift fish were still alive and swimming in the farm’s large pool. The organization needed to find a way to remove about 13,000 salmon from the pool and, later, process them into food.
And the food aid group needed to do all this quickly, before the business closed forever at the end of January. Thanks to many volunteers, the group was able to empty the pool in time, place the fish in cold storage and transport them to a processer.
Brian McManus is the food bank’s chief operations officer. He said that the short amount of time to complete the operation made activities difficult. But he said, “I knew that we had the will. I knew we had the skill.”
Christina Hudson Kohler was among the volunteers who got into the water to collect the fish and put them into the cold storage containers. “It’s a little bit different,” Kohler said during a break. “In the past, my volunteer work with the food bank has been sorting carrots or peppers...”
LocalCoho was a new company that had been developing a sustainable (可持续的) salmon farming system. The system uses recycled water. The company had been supplying salmon to buyers, including restaurants, with the goal of building farms across the country. But company officials said they could not raise enough money from investors (投资者) to grow and make money. So, they decided to close the business.
The company did not want the fish to go to waste so it sought a way to donate them. The donation is expected to provide more than 26,000 hard-to-reach meals to hungry people.
24.What problem did the New York food bank meet
A.It had no ability to process food. B.It had to turn the live fish into food.
C.It lacked a source of food to hand out. D.It had not enough volunteers to help it.
25.What did the chief operations officer stress about the donation
A.Time was tight to deal with the donation.
B.He lacked experience in treating live fish.
C.There were no funds for processing live fish.
D.The donors were generous enough to donate.
26.What was Christina Hudson Kohler’s volunteer work this time
A.Transporting live fish. B.Processing live fish.
C.Sorting vegetables. D.Catching live fish.
27.Why did the new company give up their business
A.Food banks needed fish. B.Salmon are not popular.
C.It lacked money. D.It wasted too much water.
After weeks of struggling to climb, a huge turtle weighing hundreds of kilograms slows down and stops. Thick woods are blocked in its way by blackberry bushes that look like nets made of wire. After a short exploration into the painful prickles (芒刺), the turtle backs out and moves on with difficulty, searching for a way out of the woods.
These blackberry-lined forests of Spanish cedar trees are invasive (侵入的) in the tortoise’s island home in the Galapagos Islands. “If the Cedrela forests one day manage to block the tortoises’ migration (迁徙) altogether, the impact on the tortoises and the surrounding island ecosystem could be dire,” researchers say.
Wildlife biologist Stephen Blake and his colleagues have been studying the movements of Western Santa Cruz tortoises since 2009. Tracking the tortoises’ positions with GPS tags and other mobile instruments earlier discovered that some tortoises started weeks-long migrations to the highlands of Santa Cruz Island — as much as 400 meters above sea level over two to four weeks — and back.
The researchers analyzed about 10 years of migration data from 25 tagged adult tortoises, and covered 140 migration routes through Spanish cedar forests on the island. Most tortoises liked climbing into small gaps between Cedrela stands, one of which is only about 140 meters wide at its narrowest and two others around a kilometer and half a kilometer wide each. This is fairly slim compared with the island’s 40-kilometer width, especially when considering how thousands of tortoises might gather on these routes between July and November each year to march uphill.
A few tortoises enter these thick patches of blackberry and can’t move. Some turn around and walk back out. For those that make it through, the cedar forest is well shaded, which makes it harder for the tortoises to stay warm. There’s also little food there. It’s just not an environment that they want to be spending a week trying to walk through.
28.What is the problem with the turtle
A.It loses its home. B.It is tired of travelling.
C.It is stuck in the forest. D.It suffers from hunger.
29.What does the underlined word “dire” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Strange. B.Terrible. C.Beneficial. D.Reasonable.
30.What do the researchers think of migration routes through the forests
A.They are too narrow. B.They are too high.
C.They are too long. D.They are too dangerous.
31.What does the forest mean to tortoises
A.A safe shelter. B.A pleasant shade.
C.A place with rich food. D.An unfriendly environment.
Ten Americans recently received two college degrees: One from a university in New York and the other from a Chinese university. The dual-degree (双学位) program is a project of Hofstra University on Long Island and China’s Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (DUFE).
Herman Berliner is the head of Hofstra University. He believes it is the first time American undergraduate students received degrees from an American and Chinese university at the same time. Students also take part in a six-week summer internship (实习) with an international company in China and attend education programs organized by DUFE.
“Nowadays a good business education should be global because it is a global economy,” Berliner said. “And it should be hands-on because hands-on experience gives our students more exposure to the reality they will find in the business world.” Berliner said he expects to welcome Chinese students to Hofstra University to continue their education and take internships at American companies.
Tori-Rae Matisoff of Monroe, New Jersey, is one of the 10 students to graduate with two degrees in business — one from Hofstra University and the other from DUFE. Last summer, she worked for the human resources office of a company in China. The company is one of the world’s largest producers of medicine. “This kind of experience really opens up your mind,” the New Jersey woman said. She is continuing her business studies at Hofstra University. She hopes to complete a master’s degree program.
While Hofstra University appears to be the first undergraduate program to offer dual degrees with a Chinese university, many American colleges offer students a chance to study overseas for part of a school year. And some colleges offer dual graduate school degrees with colleges outside the United States. Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies offers a dual master’s program in global politics and economics with Tsinghua University in China.
At Hofstra University’s graduation ceremonies, the 10 dual-degree receivers were given a red scarf from DUFE, as well as their Hofstra University diploma
32.What does Berliner think of the dual-degree program
A.Cheap. B.Necessary. C.Outstanding. D.Convenient.
33.What is Tori-Rae Matisoff going to do in the future
A.Set up her own business. B.Get two degrees in business.
C.Go on with her further study. D.Work for a company in China.
34.What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about
A.More American colleges cooperate with oversea schools.
B.More foreign students will study part-time in America.
C.More Chinese universities are popular in America.
D.More American students will get two degrees.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.A Unique Path to Career Success B.The Benefit of Owning Two Degrees
C.A Good Chance to Practice and Study D.Two College Degrees for the Price of One
Generally, most of us rely on forecasts (预报)to tell us what kind of weather to expect. 36 Not only can predicting (预测) the weather be a fun hobby, it can also be a useful skill if you enjoy outdoor activities, such as hiking or camping. By learning what to look for, you can predict the weather without a forecast or technological device.
Determine the direction of the wind. Wind direction helps determine upcoming weather. Since weather moves in from the west, westerly winds indicate good weather because they suggest the bad weather is already to your east. Easterly winds suggest that the bad weather is coming toward you. You can use grass or leaves to determine the direction of the wind. 37
Watch smoke from a fire. The air pressure determines what direction the smoke will go. In high pressure, the smoke will go directly up into the air. 38 When smoke circles downwards, it means that bad weather is very close.
39 Before a storm, the low-pressure system can push out the area’s normal wind patterns. This creates a temporary calm before the storm begins. You’ll notice a lack of wind, which creates stillness over the area. If you’re near water, it will be calm and still, as well. This calm indicates a coming storm.
Check for humidity (湿度). High humidity often comes before a storm, so watch for signs of high humidity, such as frizzy hair, curling leaves, and swollen wood. 40 If you live in an area that always has high humidity, rely on other observations to predict the weather.
A.Watch for calm conditions.
B.Keep an eye out for low pressure.
C.These signs can tell you that a storm is on the way.
D.If the pressure is low, it will circle back down around the fire.
E.Current weather forecasts can predict the weather for more than 30 days.
F.Throw your grass or leaves into the wind and watch the way that it blows or falls.
G.However, it is possible to predict the weather using your skills of observation and knowledge.

Looking back on that fateful day about 30 years ago when I ran the New York City (NYC) Marathon, a mass of emotions still flood me. The NYC Marathon had always been on my bucket list, and after months of hard training, I was finally ready to take on the challenge. My family, my biggest supporters, were all set to meet near the finish line to celebrate my achievement. My three kids, my husband, Steve, and his parents were all excited for me, and we had planned this moment for so long.
On the morning of the marathon, I stood at the starting line, feeling excited. My husband, gave me a reassuring hug and said, “You’ve trained so hard for this. Just pace yourself and enjoy the moment.” My kids cheered me on, their little faces filled with pride. My 8-year-old son, Jack, handed me a small drawing he had made for me, saying, “Mom, this is for when you finish. I know you can do it!” I smiled, hugging and kissing him affectionately, and with a deep breath, I began the race.
The race itself was full of pain and perseverance. My legs burned with each step, and my lungs felt like they were on fire. But every time I thought of my family waiting for me at the finish line, I pushed myself harder. The crowd’s cheers along the course fueled me on, and I managed to maintain a steady pace. As I approached the final miles, I could see the finish line in the distance, and a burst of determination pushed me forward. I crossed the finish line, exhausted but excited, and immediately started making my way to our designated meeting spot.
When I arrived, I was greeted with hugs from my husband, parents-in-law, and two of my kids. But wait, where was Jack

W: Hi, my name is Sarah and I’d like to tell you about my favorite hobby, which is playing the guitar. I started learning to play the guitar about a year ago. At first, it was a bit challenging because I had never played any musical instrument before, but with practice and determination, I’ve made a lot of progress. I take guitar lessons once a week with a teacher who teaches me different skills. It’s really helpful to have someone guide me. In addition to my lessons, I also spend a lot of time practicing on my own. I usually practice for an hour every day. Sometimes, I play along with my favorite songs. Playing the guitar has not only improved my musical skills, but also has helped me develop patience. It’s a great way for me to relax and express myself creatively. I hope to continue playing the guitar and maybe even join a band someday.

在短暂地探索了痛苦的刺后,乌龟后退了一步,艰难地继续前进,寻找走出树林的路)”以及第五段“A few tortoises enter these thick patches of blackberry and can’t move.
根据第二段“If the Cedrela forests one day manage to block the tortoises’ migration (迁徙) altogether, the impact on the tortoises and the surrounding island ecosystem could be dire (如果西班牙红杉林有一天完全阻挡了龟的迁徙,对龟和周围岛屿生态系统的影响将会是dire)”以及常识可知,如果森林完全阻挡龟的迁徙,乌龟无法完成迁徙,这将会产生严重的后果,划线单词dire意为“可怕的”,与Terrible意义相近。故选B。
根据第四段“Most tortoises liked climbing into small gaps between Cedrela stands, one of which is only about 140 meters wide at its narrowest and two others around a kilometer and half a kilometer wide each. This is fairly slim compared with the island’s 40-kilometer width, especially when considering how thousands of tortoises might gather on these routes between July and November each year to march uphill. (大多数乌龟喜欢爬进塞德雷拉看台之间的小间隙,其中一个看台最窄处只有140米宽,另外两个看台各宽约一公里半。与该岛40公里的宽度相比,这相当小,特别是考虑到每年7月至11月期间数千只乌龟可能会聚集在这些路线上向上行进)”可知,与岛的宽度相比,研究人员认为穿过森林的迁徙路线太窄。故选A。
根据第五段“For those that make it through, the cedar forest is well shaded, which makes it harder for the tortoises to stay warm. There’s also little food there. It’s just not an environment that they want to be spending a week trying to walk through. (对那些成功穿过的龟来说,雪松森林树荫浓密,使它们更难保持温暖。那里食物也很少。这不是它们愿意花一周时间穿过的环境)”可知,森林使它们更难保持温暖,这对龟来说是不友好的环境。故选D。

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了美国霍夫斯特拉大学与东北财经大学的双学位项目及学生收获。
32.推理判断题。根据第三段““Nowadays a good business education should be global because it is a global economy,” Berliner said. “And it should be hands-on because hands-on experience gives our students more exposure to the reality they will find in the business world.” (柏林纳说:“如今,良好的商业教育应该是全球化的,因为这是一个全球经济体。”“它应该是实践性的,因为实践经验能让我们的学生更多地接触到他们在商业世界中会遇到的现实。”)”可知,柏林纳认为双学位项目是符合全球经济需求的,且强调实践性的重要性,说明他认为这个项目是必要的。故选B。
33.细节理解题。根据第四段“She is continuing her business studies at Hofstra University. She hopes to complete a master’s degree program. (她正在霍夫斯特拉大学继续她的商业研究。她希望完成硕士学位课程)”可知,Tori-Rae Matisoff未来打算继续深造。故选C。
34.主旨大意题。根据第五段“While Hofstra University appears to be the first undergraduate program to offer dual degrees with a Chinese university, many American colleges offer students a chance to study overseas for part of a school year. And some colleges offer dual graduate school degrees with colleges outside the United States. (虽然霍夫斯特拉大学似乎是第一个与中国大学提供双学位的本科项目,但许多美国大学为学生提供在一个学年的部分时间去海外学习的机会。还有一些大学与美国以外的学院提供双研究生学位)”可知,第五段主要讲的是更多美国大学与海外学校开展合作。故选A。
根据第一段“Ten Americans recently received two college degrees: One from a university in New York and the other from a Chinese university. The dual-degree (双学位) program is a project of Hofstra University on Long Island and China’s Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (DUFE).

36.由上文“Generally, most of us rely on forecasts (预报) to tell us what kind of weather to expect.(通常,我们大多数人依靠预报来了解预期的天气情况。)”以及下文“By learning what to look for, you can predict the weather without a forecast or technological device.(通过了解要寻找什么,你可以在没有天气预报或技术设备的情况下预测天气。)” G项“However, it is possible to predict the weather using your skills of observation and knowledge.(然而,利用观察能力和知识来预测天气是可能的。)中However表转折,打破“依赖预报”的常规认知,“using observation and knowledge”直接引出后文“无需设备预测天气”的方法,与“predict the weather without a forecast”形成语义呼应,衔接“常规做法→替代方案”的逻辑。故选G项。
37.由上文“You can use grass or leaves to determine the direction of the wind.(你可以用草或树叶来确定风向。)” F项“Throw your grass or leaves into the wind and watch the way that it blows or falls.(把草或树叶抛向风中,观察它们吹或落的方向。)”中“Throw...into the wind”承接“use grass or leaves”,“watch the way”细化操作细节,与“determine the direction”形成“方法指令→具体动作”的衔接,符合“理论指导→实践操作”的逻辑。故选F项。
38.由上文“In high pressure, the smoke will go directly up into the air.(在高压下,烟会直接升到空中。)”及下文“When smoke circles downwards, it means that bad weather is very close.(当烟向下盘旋时,意味着坏天气很近了。)” D项“If the pressure is low, it will circle back down around the fire.(如果气压低,烟会绕着火焰向下盘旋。)”中“if the pressure is low”与“in high pressure”形成对比,“circle back down”对应后文“circles downwards”,通过“高压 — 低压”的烟态对比,支撑“气压决定烟向”的论述,形成“条件→现象”的逻辑闭环。故选D项。
39.由下文“Before a storm, the low-pressure system can push out the area’s normal wind patterns. This creates a temporary calm before the storm begins. (在风暴来临之前,低压系统可以推翻该地区的正常风向。这在风暴开始前创造了一个暂时的平静。)”可知,此处需总述“观察平静状态”的建议。A项“Watch for calm conditions.(留意平静的状况。)” 故选A项。
40.由上文“High humidity often comes before a storm, so watch for signs of high humidity, such as frizzy hair, curling leaves, and swollen wood.(暴风雨前通常会出现高湿度,所以要注意高湿度的迹象,比如卷曲的头发、卷曲的叶子和肿胀的木头。)” C项“These signs can tell you that a storm is on the way.(这些迹象可以告诉你风暴即将来临。)” 中“These signs”指代“frizzy hair, curling leaves” 等湿度迹象,“a storm is on the way”呼应“comes before a storm”,将分散的现象归纳为“风暴预兆”,形成“现象描述→结论”的逻辑,同时与后文“依赖其他观察”形成补充说明。故选C项。

Panic began to crowd in as I looked around, searching for his familiar face. “Has anyone seen Jack ” I asked, my voice trembling. My family exchanged worried looks, and we quickly realized that he was nowhere to be found. At that moment, time seemed to stand still. We sprang into action, crazily searching the area. Then, after what felt like timelessness but was probably only about 10 minutes, a woman approached us. To our great relief and joy, she was holding Jack’s hand. We hugged Jack tightly, as if afraid to let go, each of us trying to process the whirlwind of emotions.
When we turned to thank the kind woman, she had already disappeared into the crowd. Her selfless act of kindness remains in my memory. To this day, I often wonder about that woman. If I ever had the chance to meet her, I would express my deepest gratitude from the bottom of my heart. That day was one of the hardest of my life, filled with fear and uncertainty, but she brought us back together. I owe her a debt of gratitude that I can never fully repay, but I would surely give her the biggest hug and say, “Thank you. You saved our family that day.” That marathon will always be a testament to the strength of family bonds and the kindness of strangers.
