二、阅读理解
Louis Pasteur once said, “Chance favors the prepared mind.” That’s the truth behind the following inventions — the scientists were prepared and were able to see the magic in a mistake.Mauve
In 1856, William Perkin was trying to come up with an artificial medicine, but his experiments produced a thick mess. But the more Perkin looked at it, the more he saw a beautiful color in his mess. Turns out he had made mauve, the first-ever synthetic dye (合成染料), which was far better than any natural dyes: the color was brighter, clearer, and didn’t fade or wash out.Superglue
This super-sticky substance was discovered by accident — twice! Chemist Harry Coover had been attempting to make clear plastic gun sights, and in 1942 one method he tested produced an extremely quick bonding adhesive (黏合剂). It was useless for his gun sights, though, and he forgot about it until almost ten years later, when he came across it again while developing heat-resistant parts for airplanes. This time he realised its potential, and the product was put on the market.Plastic
In 1907, shellac (虫胶) was used in electronics. It was costly, so American chemist Leo Hendrik Baekeland tried to produce an alternative. Instead, his experiments produced a material that could take high temperatures. He later developed it into plastic, and it was soon used in the production of almost everything.Teflon
Back in the 1930s, Young DuPont chemist Roy Plunkett was working to make a new kind of CFC for refrigeration. After storing the gas in certain containers, he opened one to discover that it had changed into a white powder that was extremely sticky and had a very high melting point. Three years later, the substance, which was named Teflon, was patented.
21.Which invention came out earliest
A.Mauve. B.Superglue. C.Plastic. D.Teflon.
22.Who recognized the value of his original invention when developing airplane parts
A.William Perkin. B.Harry Coover. C.Leo Hendrik. D.Roy Plunkett.
23.What do the inventions have in common
A.They were made by accident. B.They could take high temperatures.
C.They received no recognition at first. D.They could be used in medical fields.
People usually talk about the straw that broke the camel’s back, but really it should be the password that wiped out my memory bank.
I was going along fine — with instant recall of my bank PIN, my mobile phone number and the date of my cousin’s birthday before I downloaded a gas station payment app for its new customer discount. It asked me to create a password. When 1 typed in “gas1”, it was rejected for not being complex enough. I tried again: “IHateHerlessOilCompanies@”. But that was too long and didn’t include “at least one number”. But here is the thing: as soon as I added the fresh password into my memory, I instantly forgot all the others. My brain had hit its limit for passwords. I now know nothing.
I had entered some passwords in a notebook. Of course, I didn’t write down the actual passwords, in case it fell into the wrong hands. Instead, I masked them in a way that only a family member could figure them out. For example, I combined my bank PIN with our postal code, then added it to a list of phone numbers. It would fool even Albert Einstein.
Maybe we need a system like the one we use to remember people’s names. You know, you form an association between a person’s characteristics and their name by whispering “Skinny George, Skinny George” in heart after meeting them. The risk is that, upon seeing him, you’ll burst out the phrase. “Skinny George” might not mind, but it’s possible “Boring Betty” will. As for remembering passwords as you change them, you could simply use the first and last letters of your favorite singer’s greatest hits, together with the year of their release.
Maybe I’ll try that one out — but only after describing the system in the notebook. Then I’ll hide it in a place so secret that I’ll never remember where it is.
24.What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs
A.He was driven mad by passwords. B.He was cheated by a marketing trick.
C.He was refused by the gas station. D.He had a very serious memory disorder.
25.By mentioning Albert Einstein in paragraph 3, the author intends to .
A.prove the uselessness of his passwords
B.challenge the intelligence of scientists
C.show how secure his passwords were
D.promote a more scientific password system
26.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To recommend a password-remembering method.
B.To encourage readers to use password notebooks.
C.To complain about the trouble caused by passwords.
D.To point out the importance of using complex passwords.
27.What is the tone of the text
A.Indifferent. B.Inspiring. C.Serious. D.Humorous.
I was living with my grandparents at the time. Our grandparents had recently retired. While they’d managed to save enough to buy a home, they were short on living expenses.
So, our grandfather took a job as doorkeeper of the Java school building. Keeping the entire building clean was a stressful job for one man. Realizing this, I began helping him after school, sweeping rooms and emptying waste baskets, for a small wage.
When winter arrived, he fired up the school’s furnace (火炉). He quickly realized how difficult it had become for him to shovel (铲) the huge pile of coal chips required to fill in the furnace. I volunteered to take on that job, a commitment that required me to set my alarm clock an hour earlier each morning. I’d go over to the school, and shovel a half ton of coal, enough to keep the fire burning for 24 hours. After finishing that task, I’d go home, change clothes, and eat breakfast. Then I’d head back to school, always at the last minute.
It was during those morning rushes to school that I discovered my superpower. On two mornings, at the very instant I stepped onto the sidewalk in front of the school, the first bell rang. That was the signal for students to head to class. This astonishing coincidence caused me to improve my precision. I carefully planned each phase of my morning activity. I paced myself. Often I’d step onto the school’s sidewalk just as the first bell rang. This accomplishment gave me enormous pride — and some strange feelings.
Decades later, at a school reunion, I happened to meet Harold Spiry, who had been in charge of ringing the bell by pressing a button in his office. I couldn’t resist boasting (吹嘘). I told Mr. Spiry about how well I had ordered my complex morning work back then, how my timing had been faultless. “Oh that,” he said. “Do you recall that my office windows looked out over the front of the building I often saw you coming. And when you hit the sidewalk, I’d ring the bell.”
28.What does the underlined word “this” refer to
A.Grandparents’ lack of living expenses.
B.Granddad’s retiring as a doorkeeper.
C.Grandparents’ saving money to buy a house.
D.Granddad’s hardships in cleaning the whole building.
29.Why did the author get up earlier every morning
A.To avoid being late for school. B.To help his granddad clean classrooms.
C.To fill coal into the school’s furnace. D.To volunteer to empty waste baskets.
30.What talent did the author find about himself
A.He had the ability to be on time. B.He was good at morning activities.
C.He could do things at his own pace. D.He could fire up the furnace alone.
31.How would the author feel after hearing what Harold Spiry said
A.Proud. B.Surprised.
C.Cautious. D.Regretful.
Winning a remarkable science award is really a big deal, especially if you are 12 years old. But Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones, as stated in the press release.
“The top winners have exhibited boundless curiosity,” Maya Ajmera president and CEO of Society for Science, said in the press release. “Their remarkable research not only reflects their talent but also paves the way for an exciting new future.”
Shanya’s inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022, reported The Washington Post. “I had never really experienced something like that before,” she told The Washington Post about the early morning fire at Holder’s Country Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smoke detectors. and yet it still burned down,” she added.
After she studied fire statistics, Shaya spent over a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could have prevented the fire. Unlike traditional smoke detectors that sense active fires from the smoke in the air, Shanya’s thermal (热的) imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring.
With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer the device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning. Creating the prototype(原型) was difficult and the hardest part was the programming, “I had two designs, and my first design completely failed. It was a really big challenge I had to go through.” she said. The final device outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants to bring the costs down to make it even more common than hardwired smoke detectors.
“Shanya saw a problem, went after it and tried to solve it, and that’s what we need to encourage with all young people,” said Ajmera. She also highlighted the significance of supporting individuals, especially girls and kids of color, in STEM fields, as research indicates that many young people drop out of these areas.
32.What can we learn about Shanya from the first two paragraphs
A.She gained a lot of money in the award. B.She showed a curious nature as a schooler.
C.She set a big stage for young people her age. D.She was junior to other winners in performance.
33.What motivated Shanya to develop her fire detection system
A.Her desire to win the science award. B.Her experience of a destructive fire.
C.Her interest in computer programming. D.Her goal to improve STEM education for girls.
34.What is an advantage of Shanya’s invention
A.It consists of two parts that are easier to conduct.
B.It can send out a warning against a potential fire.
C.It can detect active fires from the smoke in the air.
D.It functions when a fire breaks out within 10 minutes.
35.Which of the following can best describe Shanya
A.Reliable. B.Cooperative. C.Innovative. D.Generous.
Traveling abroad opens up a world of adventure, culture, and unforgettable memories for a traveler. 36 Here are four essential safety tips to keep in mind:
● Ensure transportation safety. Always book your transportation through reputable platforms. Check reviews from other travelers to confirm that the service is reliable. While some third-party tour companies may advertise “great deals”, do stick to trustworthy options for your peace of mind. 37
● 38 Carry some cash along with at least two credit cards. Before you travel, double-check with your bank that your credit cards will be accepted as a form of payment. Having multiple cards ensures that if one isn’t usable, the other can be used. In case your card is lost or stolen, contact your bank immediately to prevent any fraudulent charges. A small amount of cash should be carried, as there will be times when the credit card is not accepted.
● Secure your accommodations. Choose well-reviewed hotels or hostels with higher ratings, if available. 39 To ensure you can sleep soundly, consider investing a bit more for the peace of mind that comes with staying in a comfortable and, most importantly, safe environment.
●Learn key phrases in the local language. Knowing how to ask for help, seek directions or communicate in an emergency is invaluable. It is highly advisable to have key phrases in the local language written or printed on cards. 40 In an emergency, you can turn to these cards for help to overcome the language barrier. This preparation will greatly facilitate your communication with locals.
Remember, the essence of travel is not just in the destinations we explore but in the memories that we create and the safety with which we return home. The world awaits you, and now you’re more than ready to meet it safely.
A.Manage your finances wisely.
B.No one can resist a good sleep.
C.The locals are there to help you out.
D.Remember, you get what you pay for.
E.Call your bank for financial safety tips.
F.However, safety should always come first.

Today high-quality antique porcelain (瓷器) is quite rare because even though millions of pieces were made and distributed throughout the world, many did not survive the time. 56 (fortune), there is still one source of porcelain that is helping us to better understand the 57 (develop) of porcelain — shipwrecks.
One of the oldest of these shipwrecks is the remains of an Arabic ship that sank near the island of Belitung, Indonesia in 830, during the Tang Dynasty. 58 (discover) in 1998, the ship contained more than 60,000 59 (piece) of porcelain. Interestingly, most of the pottery was colorful Changsha ware, made in Hunan. There was even an example 60 blue and white ceramic, probably made for the Middle East — the 61 (early) known blue and white ware in existence. The wreck has great historical importance, and the collection of items has been put on public display in a museum in Singapore.
Another important shipwreck is the Nanhai One, a Chinese ship that sank near Yangjiang, Guangdong, during the Song Dynasty, and which was found in 1987. In 62 effort to learn as much as possible about the wreck and its treasure, a steel 63 (contain) was lowered over the site and was gradually excavated (挖掘) over a period of nine months. Around 13,000 porcelain pieces 64 (find).
Such shipwrecks help us better understand the history of Chinese porcelain 65 the importance of this Chinese treasure.

3.A
【原文】W: Watch what happens when I place some cheese on the edge of the wall just here.

W: Yes, and the dog kept watching from its bed.
M: Maybe it’s time to get a cat.
4.B
【原文】W: Good evening, Mr Johnson. Thank you for coming. I want to discuss how Mary has been doing in class lately. She has been a bit distracted during lessons.

【原文】W: What do you think of the movie we saw just now
M: Oh. I’m so disappointed with it.

M: Actually, I read the book before and the film totally changed the ending of the story. And I can’t understand why.
W: Really I wonder how the story ends in the book.
M: The book is just on the second shelf in our study.
W: Great. I can’t wait to go back home to read it.
8.C 9.B 10.A
【原文】M: We’ve got exams soon. Have you done much revision
W: Well, I’ve been studying for two weeks. I just find it boring and I get so tired.
M: You could do the revision a couple of hours in the morning and then do the rest later in the day. Personally, I prefer to do it all in the evenings. But that doesn’t suit everyone.
W: Good idea. Anyway, this time next month, the exams will be over. Shall we organize a party

M: These aren’t notes. This looked more like a food text.
W: What do you mean
M: You don’t need to copy everything word for word. Notes should be brief, focusing on key terms and concepts. You can consider drawing symbols. They can be really effective memory AIDS. And you don’t need to write so many words.
W: That’s a great idea.

M: So how is your establishment any different
W: Well, simply put, our customers come in and enjoy the food and drinks while little rabbits play about and brush against their legs.
M: That’s amazing. How did you come up with the idea
W: We saw other cafés with cats in them, so we thought, why not rabbits
M: But is it safe Do the rabbits ever bite people Or do any customers ever hurt the rabbits
W: Rabbits are very peaceful. Furthermore, our rabbits have all received the required shots. As for our customers, they are all animal lovers. The Parisian Café offers a great chance for them to learn about rabbits. And how to take care of them.

【原文】 M: For hundreds of years, people have enjoyed Ice cream. No one is sure when people first started to eat this frozen food. But paintings show an icy dessert being enjoyed as far back as the 12th century. Ice cream became popular among the rich in Europe during the 15 hundreds. King Charles the first England liked Ice cream so much. He carried out a law which said that it could be served only at his table. He even said that he would cut off his cook’s head if the cook gave the Ice cream recipe to anyone. To him, the food was of great value, so he didn’t want to share it with anyone. In the United States, Ice cream was eaten on special occasions by the country’s richest people. However. Ice cream didn’t reach the rest of the nation until 1845. At that time, a new Jersey woman made a handheld Ice cream maker. With that machine, Ice cream is not just for Kings and presidents. Now, it is for all of us.

86.Dear Ryan,
I’m Li Hua from Senior 3. I understand that you’ve decided to cancel the English Corner due to our tight schedules. However, I believe it’s essential for us to have such activities to improve our English and relieve stress.
Considering our busy schedules, I suggest adjusting the timing of the English Corner to better fit our study timetable. Perhaps we could have it during lunch breaks or after school, when most of us are available. Alternatively, an online English Corner could be a great option, allowing us to participate from home.
I hope you can take my suggestions into account and make the necessary adjustments. We really appreciate your efforts in helping us improve our English.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
