Jarrett Little was testing his mountain bike outside of Columbus, Georgia, when his riding partner, Chris Dixon, stopped suddenly. Something in the distance moving among the trees had caught his attention. It turned out to be a sandy-colored five month-old puppy.
“He was really thin, ribs showing, and a broken leg,” The cyclists said, feeding the friendly pup and sharing their water. Then they also quickly realized that the dog was coming with them along the way, although they had no idea why. They were still more than seven miles from downtown. “But we couldn’t leave him in danger.” Little said.
Little had an idea. He carefully picked up his new friend and put the 38-pound dog’s hind legs into the back pockets of his cycling jacket, with front paws over his shoulders.
“He was injured, so he wasn’t trying to fight.” Little recalled.
They rode for 30 minutes to a bike store in town where they got more water and food for the dog. It was then and there that Andrea Shaw, a lawyer from Maine in town on business, happened by. The dog made a run for her, licking her. Shaw was smitten. After learning the story, she declared: “I am keeping this dog.” Shaw named him Columbo after the town where they’d met and scheduled an operation for its broken leg. Today, Columbo is living the high life on a farm with a horse and a pony, and a six-year-old boy keeps him company. As Dixon said, “He is the luckiest dog alive.”

Gardening is often seen as a relaxing hobby, but it offers far more than just a way to pass the time. Recent studies have shown that getting your hands dirty in the garden can improve both physical and mental health.
One of the most obvious benefits is physical activity. Digging, planting, and watering are all forms of exercise that can help strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and increase endurance. Even light gardening tasks like weeding can burn calories. A 30-minute gardening session can be as effective as a short walk, making it an accessible form of exercise for people of all ages.
Gardening also has a positive impact on mental well-being. Spending time in nature reduces stress and anxiety. The smell of soil, the sight of growing plants, and the sound of birdsong create a calming environment. Moreover, the sense of accomplishment from growing your own vegetables or flowers can boost self-esteem. Research has found that people who garden regularly report feeling happier and more relaxed.
Another benefit is the opportunity to connect with munity gardens, for example, bring people together. Neighbors can share gardening tips, swap plants, and enjoy the fruits of their labor. This social interaction helps build stronger relationships and a sense of community.
Finally, gardening can contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle. Growing your own food reduces the need for store-bought produce, which often involves long-distance transportation and packaging. Home-grown fruits and vegetables are fresher, healthier, and free from pesticides. Even if you only have space for a few potted herbs, you can still enjoy the benefits of home-grown food.

From toothbrushes and shampoo bottles to furniture and clothes, plastic is used to make lots of everyday items. When these items are thrown away, some of them end up in the oceans. The plastic, which can take hundreds of years to break down, is known to harm marine wildlife. To tackle this problem, scientists have developed a type of plastic that will biodegrade(生物降解)in seawater.
Biodegradable plastics are ones that break down naturally. But currently, even biodegradable plastics don’t break down completely in the sea. Instead, they break up into tiny pieces called microplastics, which are often eaten by fish, birds and other animals.
The new plastic could help solve this microplastic problem. It was created by researchers at the RIKEN Centre for Emergent Matter Science in Japan. Unlike other biodegradable plastics, the new plastic fully dissolves in salty seawater. When it dissolves, it breaks up into the separate substances that it was made from, and then tiny living things can break these down fully. Tests have shown that the plastic can break down in a few hours in seawater, and in around 10 days in soil.
The new plastic has other benefits too. It is not poisonous and non-flammable, so it can’t easily be burned and release climate-harming gases. The plastic can be made hard or flexible and shaped into different forms at temperatures above 120℃, so it could be used to make many sorts of items. Takuzo Aida, who led the research, said the new plastic is “strong, stable, recyclable”, and can be used in lots of ways. It could be very useful, for example, in replacing single-use plastics. Joaquín Martínez Urreaga, a professor of chemical engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, called the idea “a promising alternative to solve marine pollution”.
32.What is the main problem with the biodegradable plastics in the ocean

C.It can fully dissolve in salty seawater. D.It can break down in a few days in soil.
34.What can we infer about the new plastic from the passage
A.It can only be used to make single-use items.
B.It will completely replace traditional plastics in all industries.

Last summer, I joined a two-week long art camp. At first, I was nervous as I didn’t know anyone there. Among the students, there was a girl named Maya. She was always surrounded by a group of friends, chatting and laughing loudly. I was too shy to approach her.
One day during a painting class, I was struggling with my brushwork. Maya happened to pass by and noticed my trouble. She pulled up a chair beside me and patiently showed me some painting techniques. Her kind smile and warm words made me feel at ease immediately. From then on, we became good friends. We spent every day at the camp together, sharing our dreams and secrets.
As the end of the art camp approached, everyone was busy preparing for the final exhibition. Maya and I decided to create a joint painting that combined our different styles. However, just two days before the exhibition, a huge argument broke out between us. We had different ideas about how to complete the painting and neither of us was willing to compromise (妥协). We ended up storming off in anger, leaving the half-finished painting on the painting stand.
That night, I lay in bed, tossing and turning (辗转反侧). I kept thinking about our friendship and how stupid our argument was. I realized that friendship was more important than winning an argument.

Titled Studio Scene, it was a 10-minute black and white short with a very simple style. In 1941, China’s first full-length feature animated film Princess Iron Fan was born. The period from 1950 to 1964 was regarded as the Golden Age of Chinese cartoons. Many excellent animated works came up and many new styles were created. The well-known action cartoon Magic Brush won China’s first international award. Another example, Havoc in Heaven, tells the heroic story of the Monkey King, combining classic Chinese culture and cartoon, creating a good memory for many people that lasts until today. Chinese cartoons began their second development stage after 1978. Classic animated films such as Ne Zha and The Three Monks were shown on screen. Their stories were mostly based on traditional Chinese literature and featured a typical Asian style. However, from 1996 to 2014, Chinese cartoons saw a decline compared with the introduction of cartoons from other countries, including Japan...

Before she could say anything, I blurted out, “Maya, I’m so sorry about yesterday. Our friendship means everything to me, and I don’t want a silly argument to ruin it.”
Paragraph 2:
Tears filled Maya’s eyes as she rushed towards me and gave me a big hug. “I’m sorry too,” she sobbed. “I was just being stubborn. Our friendship is far more precious than any painting.” We both laughed through our tears. Then, side by side, we sat down and started working on the painting again. This time, we listened to each other’s ideas, compromised, and added our unique touches. When the exhibition opened, our painting received high praise. But more importantly, our friendship became even stronger, and we knew that true friendship could overcome any obstacle.
