Volunteering is a great outlet for self-improvement while helping others, and with Bookmark, you can truly make a difference to the futures of primary school children. Three Bookmark volunteers have shared their stories with us.
Claire
Claire began reading with Zach in 2019. As a writer, she wanted to share her love of books with children who may have not discovered theirs. When packing up in their final session, Zach became happy to try various types of books. In this moment, Claire remembered the child she’d met at the beginning of her sessions, who didn’t believe anyone would read if they could choose not to and started to understand her impact as a Bookmark volunteer.
Sally
Before volunteering with Bookmark, Sally had never worked with children, so beginning the sessions was truly a step out of her comfort zone. Sally felt a real connection to Bookmark’s mission and knew the challenge would pay off. “Volunteering has made me feel more content. I feel I am making a difference.”
Aurélien
Aurélien signed up to read with Connor online in 2020. He had been looking for a way of getting back into volunteering with children as he’d found a past experience rewarding. The flexibility of Bookmark caught his eye, as the online programme fitted in well around his work commitments.
400 children are waiting for a volunteer to help them learn to read. Sign up to become a Bookmark volunteer today and change a child’s story.

The promise was a long time keeping. And so was the dream.
In the early 1950s in a small Southern California town, a little girl left yet another load of books onto the tiny library’s counter. The girl was a reader. She’d make her weekly long journey to the yellow library with the brown decorations, the little one-room building where the children’s area actually was just a corner. Frequently, she walked out of that corner in search of mental food for the mind.
As the white-haired librarian hand-stamped the due dates in the ten-year-old’s choices, the little girl looked longingly at “The New Book” obviously displayed on the counter. She amazed again at the wonder of writing a book and having it honored like that, right there for the world to see.
That particular day, she spoke out her goal. “When I grow up,” she said, “I`m going to be a writer. I’m going to write books. ”
The librarian looked up from her stamping and smiled, not with the condescension (傲慢) so many children received, but with encouragement.
“When you do write a book,” she replied, “bring it into our library and we’ll put it on display, right here on the counter.”
The little girl promised she would. As she grew, so did her dream.
Years passed. Inside, the librarian welcomed her warmly. She introduced a reporter from the local newspaper, which she’d begged a chance to write for long ago.
Then she presented her books to the librarian, who placed them on the counter with a sign of explanation. Tears rolled down the woman’s cheeks.
Then she hugged the librarian and left, pausing for a picture outside, which proved that dreams can come true and promises can be kept, even if it takes thirty-eight years.
The ten-year-old girl and the writer she’d become posed by the library sign, right next to the reader board, which said:
WELCOME BACK, JANN MITCHELL.
Why did the girl rarely stay in the children’s area
A.Because she had to help load the books.

People who give, live longer, studies have shown. Now, a new study by University of Michigan shows that why people volunteer—not whether they volunteer—is what really counts.
For the study, Konrath and colleagues analyzed data collected in 2008 and 2012 aiming at the same random samples of 3,376 people. Overall, they found that just 2.3 percent of those who once worked as volunteers had died, compared to 4.3 percent of non-volunteers. They further found that how much people volunteered mattered as well—only 1.8 percent of regular volunteers died, compared with 2.5 percent of occasional volunteers.
But what really made a difference were people’s motives for volunteering. The researchers asked people to rate how important they found various reasons for volunteering, and they found that the more important people rated reasons such as feeling pity for people in need, the more likely they were to be alive. Those who rated motives related to personal benefit as more important were more likely to have died, and just as likely to die as those who didn’t volunteer at all. These reasons included volunteering because they enjoyed the social contact, to escape their own problems, or to explore their own strengths.
Konrath says the current findings suggest it may be a poor idea to encourage people to volunteer because it’s good for them. “Volunteering is increasingly being encouraged in schools and organizations. Some groups say that it’s okay to want benefits for yourself, and encourage people to think of volunteering as an exchange for personal interests. Some groups emphasize the health benefits received through volunteering.” Konrath added, “Of course, it’s reasonable for volunteers to expect benefits for themselves. But the potential health benefits of volunteering are significantly reduced if self-benefit becomes a person’s main motive.”
What does the new study mainly find
A.How we volunteer makes sense to others.
B.How often we volunteer makes a difference.
C.Whether we volunteer decides our well-being.
D.Why we volunteer has an impact on our health.
How did the researchers do the study
A.By analyzing statistics. B.By rating volunteers’ performances.
C.By doing lab experiments. D.By grouping participants randomly.
Which of the following motives will probably contribute to a longer life
A.To develop abilities. B.To make more friends.
C.To help the poor people. D.To solve personal problems.
What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.Practical suggestions on further studies.
B.A further explanation of the current findings.
C.Potential applications of the research method.
D.A reasonable doubt about the research results.
D
Taking good care of your teeth may be linked to better brain health, according to a study published in the July 5, 2023, online issue of Neurology. “Our study found that gum (牙龈) disease and tooth loss were linked to brain shrinkage (萎缩) in the hippocampus, which plays a role in memory and Alzheimer’s disease,” said study author Satoshi Yamaguchi, Ph.D., DDS (牙医外科博士) , of Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan.
The study involved 172 people with an average age of 67 without memory problems. Participants had dental exams and took memory tests at the beginning of the study. They also had brain scans to measure the volume of the hippocampus at the beginning of the study and again four years later. For each participant, researchers counted the number of teeth and checked the amount of gum disease.
Researchers found that the number of teeth and amount of gum disease was linked to changes in the left hippocampus of the brain. For people with mild gum disease, having fewer teeth was associated with a faster rate of brain shrinkage, which is the same for people with severe gum disease having more teeth. After adjusting for age, researchers found that for people with mild gum disease, the increase in the rate of brain shrinkage due to one less tooth was equal to nearly one year of brain aging. Conversely, for people with severe gum disease, the increase in brain shrinkage due to one more tooth was equal to 1.3 years of brain aging.
“These results highlight the importance of preserving the health of the teeth and not just maintaining the teeth,” Yamaguchi said. “The findings suggest that controlling the progression of gum disease through regular dental visits is crucial, and that teeth with severe gum disease may need to be removed and replaced with appropriate prosthetic ones.”
Yamaguchi said future studies are needed with larger groups of people. Another limitation of the study is that it was conducted in one region of Japan, so the results may not be generalizable to other locations.
What is Yamaguchi’s study mainly about
A.The reason for gum disease. B.The influence of brain shrinkage.
C.The advances in memory improvement. D.The connection between teeth and brain.
How does the author present the research result
A.By making a comparison. B.By giving an explanation.
C.By quoting some experts. D.By listing some examples.
What does Yamaguchi think of the research result
A.It was unreliable. B.It was changeable.
C.It was meaningful. D.It was unexpected.
What will the future studies most probably involve according to the last paragraph
A.The potential application in related fields.
B.The broader participation from other places.
C.The more practical methods of preserving teeth.
D.The useful suggestions for preventing brain disease.

Having settled in Hotel Courtyard in Bangkok, we explored the city immediately. We went shopping for the whole day and finally we decided to return.
It was at that time that the trouble started. We forgot there are two courtyard hotels in the opposite directions. Absolutely unaware of this, we started searching for the way back. Google maps suggested us the shortest route which was just 20 minutes away by walk. 36
Bangkok felt different after sunset. Walking along the heavily-crowded roads with the dark-red sky felt beautiful. Lost in our talk, we didn’t realize that we passed onto the quieter part of the town.
37 It was closed for redecoration. Unfortunately, nobody around us then spoke English. Worse still, we stepped in a local tuk-tuk (三轮车), which took us to an unknown area for an enormous pay. We had no idea where we were, our mobile phones nearly out of charge.
38 He was a taxi driver. Recounting the day’s events proved to be a great conversation starter. We ended up talking through the way. He was so kind as to offer to drive us around for the rest of our stay. 39 For the next four days, from floating markets to the temples of Wat Pho, our trip wouldn’t have been so trouble-free without him.
Sometimes when everything doesn’t go as planned, I think about the stranger we met on the streets and how a tiny mistake on our part led to unexpected results. 40
A.That was when our hero arrived.
B.Our thankfulness knew no bounds.
C.We reached a completely different Hotel Courtyard.
D.We set off into the city with little research on transport.
E.We decided not to waste our money but our time instead.
F.The trip rings as a reminder that every cloud has a silver lining.
G.He then informed us that our hotel was just a few blocks away.

Many years ago, my father, who was 80 at that time, arrived for his regular two-week visit at my home in Karachi He lived with my elder brother in Lahore most of the time and for ten years had stuck to his habit of going for an-hour-long morning walk to keep fit, In Naturally, he was keen to continue his morning walk while with us in Karachi.
Our preferred park is a 2km walk from my house and it has a 1km walking track. I could not drive him there every day as I had to leave for the office while at the same time he wanted to set out. Since there were hardly any footpaths in Karachi, my father said he was delighted to walk on the road as he was certain there wouldn’t be much traffic in the morning.
Though I kept him informed that our house was near the park and was made of red bricks in case he got lost, I was still less confident so I suggested it would be safer if changed his walk time to the evening. That way I could take him to the park after work. However, my father — a determined person — said that he could not change his routine for just a few days and insisted that he would be leaving the house every day at 7 am and returning by 8 am. So one day when he had not returned by 8:30 am, my wife, Qaisa phoned me in a panic Worried, I immediately drove home, taking the same route that my father would have taken for his walk.
Not spotting him anywhere, I drove back to the park, in the hone of discovering some trace, but in vain. Totally at a loss for what to do next, I returned home and waited impatiently, walking back and forth in the house.

第二节
One possible version:
At 10:35 am the doorbell rang and my father stood outside the door smiling. accompanied by a young man. I hugged my father tightly and affectionately. Enormously relieved, the young man told me that my father had lost his way while returning home after the morning walk. The only description he could provide was that my house was near the park and that the house was made of red bricks. With much effort, and in almost two hours' searching, the young man was able to locate my house. He expressed great relief at getting my father home.
After knowing what had happened, I showed my appreciation of the young man's kindness. I invited him inside to join us for a cup of tea. The man refused politely and said sincerely that he felt so delighted to have brought my father safely home to me that he did not require further thanks. Then he drove the car away without even sharing his name and I have not seen him again. This kind act has a lasting influence on me. I always give others a helping hand if possible, even so many years later.
