You might recognize her name from your school days, or maybe you’ve seen her face on the 10-pound note. She is Jane Austen (1775—1817), the famous British author whose sharp wisdom and smart observations about society have attracted readers for hundreds of years. This year marks the 250th anniversary of her birth, and people are celebrating her life and writing.
Born in Hampshire, UK, Austen started reading and writing when she was young. During her life, she finished six novels, two of which were published after she died. Her novels explore topics like gender, power, education and marriage from a woman’s point of view.
Some people see Austen only as a romance writer, but many now celebrate her as “a social commentator (评论家) of her time”, said The Teen Magazine.
In Austen’s time, women had few rights. They couldn’t vote until 1918 or have control over their own money until 1870. For many, marrying a rich or powerful man was the only way to have a safe future.
But Austen’s heroines (女主人公) break these rules. They speak their minds and want more power over their own lives. “Her female characters are very strong and vocal (直言不讳的) about their opinions and what they want,” said Moa Aashacka, a 23-year-old Swedish student, to AFP.
Marilyn Joice, head of the northern branch of the Jane Austen Society, agreed. “Austen is very pertinent (直接相关的) even today,” Joice told the BBC. “She’s writing about people and their problems, their difficult families and the questions of why and even if women should marry. Those issues were important back then, and they’re still important now.”
Because her stories talk about timeless problems and ideas, Austen’s novels are still loved around the world and have been made into many movies and TV shows.
24.What can we learn about Jane Austen from the first two paragraphs
A.She published novels in her teens.
B.Her works mainly discuss themes of history.
C.Not all her novels were published while she was alive.
D.Her 250th birthday celebration focuses on her works.
25.Why are Austen’s heroines considered “strong” according to the text
A.They always follow traditional social rules.
B.They marry wealthy men for a bright future.
C.They match others into perfect relationships.
D.They bravely seek control over their lives.
26.According to Marilyn Joice, why are Jane Austen’s novels still significant today
A.They reflect the exact social rules of Austen’s time.
B.They explore timeless issues like women’s dilemmas.
C.They focus on topics that are popular in the upper class.
D.They describe the historical events of 18th-century Britain.
27.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To introduce Austen’s role as a social commentator.
B.To compare Austen’s heroines with modern women.
C.To analyze the historical context of Austen’s novels.
D.To explain why Austen’s novels are adapted into films.
A recent study showed that eating processed red meat (like bacon or hot dogs) frequently can increase the chances of developing dementia (痴呆) by 13 percent, but replacing red meat with nuts, beans or fish can lower the risk by 20 percent.
“Dietary guidelines tend to focus on reducing risks of chronic (慢性的) conditions, while cognitive (认知的) health like dementia is less frequently discussed,” said Daniel Wang, a founding member of the Mass General Brigham health care system.
The results, published online in Neurology on 15 January, show that the dementia risk is related to an imbalance of good and bad bacteria(细菌)in our guts caused by red meat. Researchers tracked the health of 133,000 people for more than 40 years to understand how diet affects brain health. The participants were mostly nurses and other healthcare workers who regularly shared details about what they ate.
People who ate processed red meat daily were more likely to develop dementia than those who rarely ate these foods. A standard serving of red meat was about the size of a soap bar. The participants underwent standard memory tests, which revealed that each daily serving of processed meat aged the brain by about 1.6 years. Additionally, people who ate more meat, whether processed or regular, reported memory and thinking problems.
When we eat meat, our gut bacteria break it down into a substance called TMAO(Trimethylamine N-oxide). Researchers think TMAO might harm our brains by causing certain proteins to clump together — the same proteins they see in dementia. However, they still need to do more research to understand this fully.
“We need these kinds of long-term studies to understand dementia because it develops very slowly, over many years,” Dr Wang added. Choosing what we put on our plate could be a key differentiator of brain health.
28.What did the study in the text focus on
A.The dietary risks for heart disease. B.The benefits of nuts, beans and fish.

A.Red meat is linked to improvements in memory.
B.Red meat is the only risk factor for brain health.
C.Daily red meat consumption speeds up brain aging.
D.Eating red meat contributes to gut bacteria balance.
30.It is implied in this passage that we should ________.
A.add processed red meat to our diet
B.eat more meat to strengthen memory
C.pay attention to diet for better mental health
D.have a balanced diet to improve health conditions
31.Where is this text probably taken from

Virtual reality (VR) technology from video games and GPS-like apps is now entering hospitals, helping doctors work more safely and successfully. Dr. Ryan Broderick, a doctor at the University of California San Diego, recently tested Apple’s Vision Pro headset with “spatial (空间的) computing” during surgeries (外科手术), becoming one of the first doctors in the U. S. to try this technology.
“With these headsets, we can project medical images into the real world of the surgery room,” Broderick explains. “We can make screens as big as a wall or adjust them to the perfect position.” This technology mixes digital images with real-world views, letting doctors see 3D models of a patient’s body — like where a tumor (肿瘤) is — almost like giving them Xray view.
In the past, doctors had to frequently turn their heads to check screens during complex surgeries, leading to neck and shoulder pain. Now, spatial computing shows all key information right in front of their eyes. “It works like a car direction system — highlighting danger areas or warning us to avoid important areas,” says Broderick.
The tech also helps train new doctors. Teachers can use virtual screens to show body structures, point out key areas with glowing arrows, or even draw where to make cuts on a 3D heart model. “Students can watch the teacher’s virtual explanations, which is clearer than reading textbooks!” Broderick adds. This hands-on learning helps trainees master skills faster.
Top U. S. hospitals like Johns Hopkins are already testing similar systems. Though the equipment is expensive and needs software improvements, Broderick remains hopeful: “This isn’t just new tools — it’s a revolution in healthcare. In 10 years, technology like this could help millions get better treatment.” From video games to life-saving surgeries, VR is proving that cool tech can truly change lives.
32.How can headsets help with surgeries according to paragraph 2
A.By making the surgery room brighter. B.By letting doctors avoid looking at screens.
C.By helping patients stay calm during surgery. D.By showing 3D pictures of the patient’s body.
33.What is one of the benefits of using VR for doctors
A.It allows them to perform surgeries without any help.
B.It reduces physical stress and potential job-related pain.
C.It enables them to communicate directly with patients.
D.It allows them to work without any medical images.
34.What is Broderick’s attitude toward VR’s future in healthcare
A.Negative. B.Neutral. C.Positive. D.Doubtful.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.What Is the Future of VR in Hospitals B.How Is VR Changing the World of Surgery
C.What Are the Challenges of VR in Hospitals D.Why Is VR Technology Important for Patients
How to Be a Good Master of Ceremonies
A master of ceremonies (MC) is the host of an event, performance, or party. Their main job is to introduce speakers, make announcements, and keep the audience engaged to ensure the event runs smoothly. 36 We’ll guide you on how to prepare and perform your role perfectly.
Do your research on key event guests.
Acquire and study a guest list from the event organizers. 37 Use that information to prepare introductions for the speakers that are more personal and genuine.
Welcome the audience and thank them for coming.
Introduce yourself and welcome the attendees in your speech. Identify the specific groups of your audience (like special guests and the audience themselves), and welcome them individually. These welcomes don’t need to be long-winded, but they do need to be sincere. 38
Tailor (调整) your performance style to the event.
39 Being an MC means that you have a great sense of humor, you can work a crowd, and you’re a practiced public speaker. Memorize the major points you’ll need to hit, and consider your posture and hand gestures, which keep the audience more engaged. Also consider the event’s audience, and what sort of presenter they’d like to see — adjust your tone to be more serious or more casual accordingly.
40
Ask an event organizer for the dress code, and then punch it up a bit. If an event is casual, dress in slacks and a button-up or a smart dress. If an event is semi-formal, wear a nice jacket or more elegant gown. As the MC, you’re the most-seen person there, and it’s better to overdress than underdress.
A.Dress a little nicer than you need to.
B.Let your audience know who the speakers are.
C.Practice public speaking before the day of the gathering.
D.Smile, take a deep breath, and center yourself to remain calm.
E.Though it can be challenging, there are ways to succeed as an MC.
F.Tell everyone you’re glad they came, and remind them of the purpose of the event.
G.Contact or research your key speakers to find out some background information on them.
