It’s important to remember humans aren’t the only ones who take amazing steps to protect,
nurture and raise their young. The animal kingdom is filled with moms that go the extra mile for
their young. Here’s a look at three outstanding animal mothers.
African Elephant
Baby elephants can’t see well at first, so they heavily depend on their mothers and stick close to
them for the first few months of their lives. Elephants form a matriarchal (母系的) society where
just about every female takes part in raising the little ones. Elephant babies usually stay with their
mothers for support and nutrition for up to two years, during which they are also taught to find food,
collect water, and protect themselves.
Orangutan(猩猩)
高一英语试卷第 2 页(共 8 页)
{#{QQABbQAhwwqwwgRACY6aBUFKCAsQsJOTJSoGgRAcuAQCyBNIFCA=}#}
Orangutan moms stand out in the mothering world thanks to two major elements of their
parenting. First, they either build a new nest or head to an older one every single night. Not
impressed yet Consider the second unbelievable qualities of orangutan moms: Orangutan kids have
the longest dependence period of any land-dwelling animal, and they will stay with their moms for
up to seven years as mom teaches them how to find food and build nests. They even come back to
“visit” for much longer than that to learn mothering skills themselves later on.
Polar Bears
A pregnant female creates a den (兽窝) in deep snow where she’ll give birth to cubs weighing
just 1.5 pounds—while she herself hasn’t eaten for months. For up to eight months, she’ll nurse
these weak cubs using only her fat reserves, losing up to 43% of her body weight in the process.
Once they come out of the den, polar bear mothers become protectors, willing to fight even larger
male bears that pose a threat to their cubs. They’ll spend 2.5 years or so teaching their young
essential survival skills for Arctic life.
21. How do elephant mothers help their young
A. By instructing them on parenting skills. B. By teaching them to find food and water.
C. By protecting them for only a few days. D. By leaving them in the wild uncared for.
22. What is special about the Orangutan kids
A. They have poor sight at first. B. They like living in the old nests.
C. They have a close bond with their mother. D. They can live without eating for months.
23. How long will the polar bears learn to survive from their mother
A. For a few months. B. For less than 2 year.
C. For more than 7 years. D. For about 2.5 years.

I was talking to my grandson, Youri, about what we wanted most in life. “I’d like to see penguins,”
he said. I replied, “That’s funny! I had the same dream when I was your age. Why penguins ”
Neither he nor I knew. Perhaps because this attractive animal was unfamiliar to us. The nearest
penguins lived in South America; we live in France.
As time went by, Youri and I continued to talk about penguins, as if to remind ourselves that we
should always make our dreams come true. Then, I received a vacation postcard from him. On the
back he had written that the place was nice, but it lacked penguins. That inspired something in me. I
dipped into my savings and said to him, “Come on, let’s go and see them!”
At the time, I was 81 and Youri was 14. We set off together, all on our own. From Buenos Aires,
we crossed Patagonia by bus, all the way to Tierra del Fuego. Youri looked after me every step of the
way, from making sure I got a good room at the hotel to translating the menu for me with the little
Spanish he spoke. Along the way, some French tourists said to me, “You’re lucky to have such a
grandson!” For me, my grandson’s presence made this trip the greatest gift of all.
We saw the penguins on the banks of the Beagle Channel, near Ushuaia, Argentina. In the
middle of a colony, an adult penguin came out from the water and approached its young, spitting out
a mouthful of fish it had just caught. It looked tired. The young pounced to eat the fish, and the adult
lay on its side, eyes half closed, looking satisfied with its work.
These days, I feel like that penguin when I look at Youri, who is now 20 and knows he can
pursue ambitious dreams.
24. What did the author and his grandson have in common
A. Their love for animals. B. Their desire to travel.

Micro-dramas(短剧 ), short video clips designed for smartphone viewing (usually lasting
minutes), are gaining global popularity. Their attraction lies in smart editing, close-up shots,
unexpected plot twists, and vivid characters, fitting audiences’ fragmented(碎片化) viewing habits.
While China leads micro-drama production, overseas adaptations highlight localization. For
example, Chinese-inspired stories about time travel or revenge(复仇) have been reshaped with
Western elements like werewolves(狼人 ) and billionaires, attracting Gen Z viewers via platforms
like ReelShort. In China, the industry boasts 576 million viewers(52.4% of internet users) and is
expected to be over 68 billion yuan in market size by 2025.
However, the industry faces challenges. Some argue that violent(暴力的 ) content harms
teenagers and worsens the online ecosystem, while repetitive stories (e.g, clone story-lines) risk
audience tiredness and market reduction.
To deal with these issues, China’s National Radio and Television Administration launched the
“micro-drama +” program, aiming to combine micro-dramas with tourism, culture, and tech for
innovation(创新 ). For instance, the “Travel Through Micro-Dramas” program plans 100 works
showcasing cultural landmarks to boost tourism. Guangdong Province, with its rich heritage, uses
cutting-edge tech to create globally attractive micro-dramas that promote local culture.
Looking ahead, the industry is exploring transmedia storytelling, mixing with film, gaming, and
animation to build interconnected story worlds. By balancing quick content delivery with cultural
depth, micro-dramas could become a powerful medium for sharing China’s heritage and modern
achievements globally.
28. Why do micro-dramas enjoy great popularity globally
A. For their low production cost. B. For their adaptation to viewers’ habits.
C. For their creative storytelling techniques. D. For their global streaming platforms.
29. What problem threatens micro-dramas’ success
A. Lack of government support. B. Heavy dependence on overseas markets.
C. Competition from traditional TV dramas. D. Unchangeable and unfriendly contents.
30. What does the “micro - drama +” program center on
A. reducing production costs. B. controlling content quality.
C. mixing with diverse industries. D. enlarging overseas viewership.

Scientists from Georgia Tech have developed a new robot named ESTHER (Experimental Sport
Tennis Wheelchair Robot), which can move around the court and even return human serves (发球).
The team believes the robot could serve as a training partner for professional players in the
future, lowering the pressure of training with another human.
The robot is the brainchild of Georgia Tech’s Matthew Gombolay, professor of robotics in the
School of Interactive Computing. He wanted to develop a better training challenge than a ball feeder
that stays in one place, one that would act like an always on-call partner or even team up with
someone in doubles matches. The result is ESTHER, an adapted wheelchair that can race to balls at
ten metres per second and probably outplay a human.
The robot was named in honor of the well-known wheelchair tennis player Esther Vergeer, who
held the world No. 1 position in women’s wheelchair tennis for almost 13 years straight.
The team placed a network of cameras around a tennis court and used computer vision
algorithms (视觉算法 ) to help ESTHER recognise an incoming tennis ball. Using cameras from
different positions, they could know where the ball is in the air and tell this information to ESTHER.
The team reached a breakthrough when they successfully and continually programmed ESTHER to
track the tennis ball coming toward it and to hit a return. ESTHER will now be developed to act as a
highly-skilled tennis player.
32. What is Esther able to do
A. Clean up a court. B. Repair a ball feeder.
C. Return human shots. D. Control a wheelchair.
33. What does the underlined word “outplay” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. perform better B. jump higher
C. go further D. think deeper
34. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. The way ESTHER works in the tennis court.
B. The future development direction of ESTHER.
C. The comparison between ESTHER and human tennis players.
D. The difficulties the team faced when programming ESTHER.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Tennis Players in Wheelchairs B. Changing Rules for Tennis Courts
C. An All-purpose Household Robot D. A Robot Moving around Tennis Court

Traveling without a phone can be an exciting way to disconnect and fully immerse(沉浸 )
yourself in new experiences. Soraya Lemboumba, a project manager from Switzerland, recently took
a 10-day phone-free trip to Panama. She admitted feeling anxious at first about losing touch,
however, she described it as “life-changing and worthwhile.” 36

●Decide your rules.
Before your trip, know your boundaries(边界) with technology. 37 For example,
no entertainment and game apps, limited daily screen time. Writing down these rules helps avoid
impulsive (冲动型 ) tech use during boring or anxious moments. You can always adjust them if
needed.
● 38
Airports often cause unexpected issues for phoneless travelers due to schedule changes, like
delays and cancellations. The key is to give yourself extra time to handle them. Print out paper
boarding passes in advance, as you won’t have a phone to display e-tickets. Instead of depending on
apps, watch airport monitors for gate changes or delays. You can even ask airline staff for
help—they’re there to assist!
●Get your positions.
39 Accept the adventure of getting lost occasionally, because wrong turns can
lead to unexpected discoveries. Carry a physical map, write down your accommodation’s full
address and store it safely in your wallet. You’ll be surprised how quickly you know a new city by
using maps and observing your surroundings instead of following GPS on your phone.
●Take pictures without a phone.
Taking photos probably prevents you from appreciating the natural scenery. Instead of shooting
every moment with a phone, try enjoying it in another way. 40 Later, rereading your
diaries will help you relive memories more vividly than just scrolling through digital photos ever
could.
So, are you ready to try a phone-free trip It might just change how you see the world—and
yourself.
A. Ask for help.
B. Set aside enough time.
C. To achieve that, create a written list of tech limitations.
D. Keep a journal and write about your daily experiences.
E. Physical maps can be your best friend and don’t fear making mistakes.
F. Here are her suggestions that help you plan a successful disconnected trip.
G. This approach allows you to focus on the journey rather than the destination.

In the heart of the busy city of New York, where the sounds of rushing cars never stopped, lived
a sixteen-year-old girl named Lisa. Unlike her classmates, who were often keen on the latest
technology, Lisa had a preference for knitting (编织) .
Lisa’s love for knitting was deeply influenced by her mother, who owned a skilled and creative
touch with needles. Her mother’s passion for knitting and generous spirit of helping others always
inspired Lisa to follow in her footsteps and take up knitting as a meaningful hobby.
Lisa was really good at knitting. She liked to make scarves(围巾), gloves, hats and mini bags
for her friends as well as her relatives. Her hats were created in a variety of styles and colors, each
one unique and full of personality. Whether it was a mini bag or a classic scarf, each knitting work
was a carefully crafted masterpiece and a unique gift full of love and warmth. With beauty and
practicality, Lisa’s creations never failed to impress.
One freezing morning in the peak of winter, the city had just been blanketed by a snowstorm
that had left many, particularly the homeless, in desperate situation. As Lisa made her way to school,
she noticed a shaking figure under the bridge near her school. It was a homeless old man she often
saw on her way, but today he looked extremely miserable(可怜的). His face was half-hidden under a
piece of worn cloth that hardly served as protection against the cold. Touched by the sight, Lisa
decided to give her scarf to the homeless old man. She approached, handing the scarf to him.
“For me ” the man asked, his eyes widened with surprise.
“Yes! I thought it might help you against the cold,” Lisa said, her breath visible in the cold air.

应用文写作参考范文
Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m Li Hua, a senior student who has a deep passion for music. When I learned that your choir
“Harmony Voices”, with the great mission of spreading beauty through songs, is recruiting new
members, I’m writing to apply for a spot.
The charm of “Harmony Voices” lies not only in its pursuit of beautiful melodies but also in its
touching vision. I’ve been into singing for years. During that time, I’ve mastered different kinds of
musical styles, like soulful ballads and lively pop songs. Also, English has always been my strong
suit. I’ve often got high scores in English courses and can easily express the emotional meanings of
English lyrics. I believe that when our voices come together in cooperation, we can create melodies
that touch listeners’ hearts deeply. I’m sure my skills and spirit can help the choir achieve its goal of
spreading goodness.
I sincerely hope to use my voice like a brush to create musical pictures and make touching
harmonies with you all. In this journey, I hope to grow not only as a singer but also as someone who
strongly believes in the beauty that music can bring.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

hope to more people. An idea suddenly popped into her head that she could set up a knitting club to
bring more warmth to those who are in need. Then Lisa waved him goodbye and hurried to school,
her heart light and warm.
Led by Lisa, a Knitting Club was started in her school. Her classmates expressed their
willingness to do their part. With time ticking away, the club grew in numbers and enthusiasm. By
the end of winter, it had given out more than three hundred hand-knitted items, warming numerous
bodies and hearts. Through their needles, they had knitted a blanket of community, and warmth that
enveloped everyone. Never did Lisa realize the impact of her small gesture. It wasn’t about the
scarves or hats; it was about weaving kindness into the fabric of society, showing that even the
smallest acts can create the warmest changes.
