When my son started preschool, my husband and I realized he was different. Almost every
morning at drop-off, he would hold on to my leg until I could free myself and run away feeling
guilty. We soon learned that he spent most days with his head on his desk, refusing to speak or
make eye contact with anyone. However, he had no problem speaking at home, which puzzled
us.
It wasn’t long before he was diagnosed with selective mutism (SM), a rare form of anxiety
characterized by the inability to speak in certain situations. For a child like him, school and
other social situations can be especially stressful, which explained why my son didn’t want us to
leave him there.
I went into full mama bear mode. Each year, I wrote a detailed email to his classroom
teacher before the start of school, giving them information on how to deal with him in class. But
in a public school, with nearly 40 kids per class and only one counselor (顾问 ) to deal with
everything, my emails often went ignored. And when I turned to the administration, they
suggested we find another school. However, my son begged me to keep him in the same school
with his older sister, insisting if he had to go to school, he liked knowing she was in the
building.

Against our better judgement, we decided to trust him and let him lead. To our surprise, his
competitive nature made him a determined student, and his grades reflected his effort. His spirit
made me want to be a positive advocate. After constant efforts, his fourth grade teacher finally
responded to my summer email and we came up with solutions that met the curriculum within
his level of comfort.
Now, he is still a little nervous about school, but I’m less anxious when seeing he’s playing
soccer with a team of boys he calls his “friends”. And for the first time in a long time, he let go
of my leg, waved goodbye and walked into the school building to face the day.
24. What caused the author to realize that her son was special
A. His poor performance in exams. B. His inability to speak to strangers.
C. His unwillingness to obey rules. D. His abnormal behaviors at school.
25. What does “full mama bear mode” show about the mother
A. She started taking persistent and organized actions to support her son.
B. She became angry because the school staff didn’t give enough support.
C. She became so emotional that she struggled to control her son’s behaviour.
D. She demanded immediate changes from teachers regardless of being ignored.
26. Which of the following best describes the author
A. Strict and demanding. B. Knowledgeable and caring.
C. Resolute and optimistic. D. Strong-willed and competitive.
27. What message does the story seem to convey
A. Schools should reform the current curriculum.
B. Strong family support makes a confident child.
C. A determined soul will finally achieve his dream.
D. Mental encouragement is crucial to children’s growth.

Researchers at the Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences are on the
frontline of postharvest technology, dedicated to preserving the freshness and nutritional value
of vegetables while reducing waste. Their work extends beyond shelf life alone, focusing also
on maintaining the quality of produce.
One key focus is rapid precooling, a critical step in preserving freshness. This involves
lowering the temperatures of freshly harvested vegetables to the ideal levels for long-term
storage. “It’s like enveloping them in invisible freshness ‘armor’,” said Wang Qing, a
researcher at the academy.
However, achieving effective precooling involves its challenges. Different vegetables and
varying levels of ripeness require temperature controls. To address this issue, the researchers
created advanced experimental platforms in their lab, carefully recording changes under various
conditions to identify the ideal temperature range for each produce type. After months of
research, they developed new methods like controlling air cooling speed and humidity, using

flowing-ice in layered containers, and using tiny ozone particles (臭氧分子) for cleaning bacteria.
“Beyond the technology, we’ve developed a range of precooling equipment suited to various
vegetables,” said Zhao Xiaoyan, an official at the academy. These new methods have made
precooling much more effective, doubling or even quadrupling the shelf life of vegetables sent
to cities.
Discoloration also poses significant challenges for vegetable preservation. “Discoloration
during storage often results in entire shipments being rejected, causing financial losses for
farmers and businesses alike,” said Wang Dan, a member of the team. Starting with white
radishes (萝卜), recreating and analyzing the vegetable’s blue discoloration process in laboratory
and real-world conditions, the team identified a plant compound (化合物 ) that produce the
unwanted blue color and discovered that controlling gas composition within packaging could
effectively prevent discoloration. Researchers then expanded their research to other vegetables,
identifying the main processes that cause color.
Over the past two years, the team’s innovations have been applied in 75 cities, including
Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. The researchers’ specialized preservation technologies and
devices have revolutionized the vegetable supply chain, generating additional sales and
increasing profits for related industries.
28. What does the underlined word “armor” in paragraph 2 most likely mean
A. A precooling system. B. A storage method.
C. A temperature controller. D. A protective covering.
29. What innovation did researchers achieve in precooling
A. Using ozone particles to replace cleaning processes.
B. Improving air cooling efficiency and humidity level.
C. Developing tailored equipment and diverse methods.
D. Creating standardized temperature for each produce type.
30. What is the key to tackling discoloration
A. Recreating discoloration process.
B. Adjusting gas inside the sealed pack.
C. Identifying plant compounds causing blue.
D. Testing white radishes under real conditions.
31. What’s the purpose of the text
A. To explain major challenges in vegetable storage.
B. To introduce breakthroughs in vegetable freshness.
C. To share researchers’ opinions in vegetable preservation.
D. To highlight the value of Chinese postharvest technology.

my lungs. Kelp forests, too, are reaching a tipping point. These towering underwater jungles,
which release life-giving oxygen into the sea, store carbon, shelter other organisms, protect
shorelines, and remain the basis of life for many marine worlds, are going through critical
changes that could push them beyond their ability to recover. Heat waves, declining sea star
numbers, and increasing urchin (海胆) populations have caused the desertification of kelp forest.
In some regions, more than 90 percent of these forests have disappeared within only the past 10
years. Some native communities, who have long understood kelp’s role as both shelter and
lifeline, describe the plant as the ocean’s “life channel,” carrying life through the currents. Now
the flow is slowing down.
And yet, scientists are studying kelp not just as a sufferer of climate change but as a
survivor. “Diving into the kelp forest is like falling into a dream,” says Sara T. Gonzalez, a
researcher at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. “But above all the magic of the kelp
forest, what really motivated me to study kelp was its two-fold importance as an essential
habitat for marine life and as a valued natural resource in human society.”
In a recent study in the Journal of Applied Phycology, Gonzalez’s team identified a certain
kelp variety with natural genetic (基因的 ) adaptations that help them withstand rising ocean
temperatures. By combining the gene of this kelp with other sea plants — from different species,
they produced organisms that grew very well under heat stress. Since this resistance seems to be
passed to young generations, it could contribute to both wild kelp restoration and seaweed
farming.
Across the world’s oceans, kelp forests are indeed disappearing—but their own cells might
hold the blueprints for their survival. “All kelps share the same life cycle,” Gonzalez says, so
this knowledge — kelp’s being resistant to heat—could be applied to other sea plants. With each
discovery, scientists edge closer to restoring these forests not just in one sea but in many,
facilitating the coming-back of the underwater forests that breathe life into the planet’s shifting
currents.
32. The underlined words “a tipping point” refer to a point when ____________.
A. kelp forests start to decline dramatically.
B. kelp forests reach their maximum height.
C. kelp forests are most sensitive to temperature.
D. kelp forests produce oxygen at the slowest speed.
33. Which of the following best describes kelp forests
A. A crucial nutrition transporter. B. An important marine ecosystem.
C. A valuable food resource. D. An iconic diving destination.
34. What do we know about Gonzalez’s study
A. It involved editing the gene of kelp. B. Its results were far from satisfactory.
C. Its implications go beyond one species. D. It aimed to identify the varieties of kelp.

Want better sleep at night You may need to rethink your eating habits, as what you eat can
all play a role in whether you sleep well at night. 36 Here are some suggestions for you.
Seek out foods rich in tryptophan.
Tryptophan (色氨酸) is an amino acid changed to chemicals that play an important role in
sleep. You can find tryptophan in brown rice, oats, pumpkin seeds, tofu, white beans and yogurt.
37 Working them into your diet will promote healthier sleep over time.
Swap sugary and processed foods for fruits and vegetables.
Many fruits and veggies are good sources for multiple sleep-supporting nutrients, which
also help the body to produce melatonin (褪黑素). They’re also a great source of fiber. 38
Instead, having more processed foods and more added sugars can lead to a higher risk of
sleeplessness nights.
39
Caffeine (咖啡因) makes you feel alert because it blocks adenosine (腺苷), a chemical that
builds up in the body during the day and makes you feel sleepy at night. Sensitivity to caffeine
varies, but the American Academy of Sleep Medicine says to avoid caffeine in the late afternoon
and evening. Experiment with the timing that works best for you. For some people, cutting out
caffeine by late morning is best.
No feasting on heavy meals right before bed.
Eating a big meal right before bed can disrupt your sleep. Digestion slows at night and
laying flat after eating can lead to physical discomforts like heartburn. Stop eating heavy foods
(like chocolate cakes, cheese burger, and steak) a couple of hours before bed. But it’s fine to eat
a little snack in the evening — think chips or a bowl of cereal. 40
A. Cut out coffee by late morning.
B. If your digestion is done, you tend to sleep better.
C. Do avoid caffeine in the late afternoon and evening.
D. So, what should we eat to help us improve sleep quality
E. People who have high fiber diets tend to sleep more deeply.
F. However, don’t assume that eating these foods makes you instantly sleepy.
G. Actually, there are many science-backed dietary practices that improve sleep quality.

It was time for bed. However, Demi, Meg and John’s five-year-old son, exposed the
motherly indulgences (溺爱) by fearlessly demanding, “More candies, mum. ”
“Now this won’t do,” said John, hardening his heart against the little naughty boy. He told
Meg that they would never enjoy any peace until the child learned to go to bed properly. Meg
agreed that it was time to give Demi a lesson. But Meg also worried that Demi wouldn’t go to
bed alone and he never did unless she stayed beside him.
“I’ll manage him.”John said to Meg, turning to Demi, “Now go upstairs, and get into your
bed!” “No!” replied the young trouble-maker, helping himself to the candy and taking a bite
with calm bravery. John warned Demi that he must never speak that way to his father and that
he would carry him upstairs if he did not go himself.
“Go away! I don’t love Papa!” Demi hid behind his mother’s skirts for protection.
Despite this, he was handed over to John, who took him upstairs. Meg begged John to be
gentle with Demi, but the boy was upset when his mother abandoned him. He felt that
something bad was about to happen. Without his candy and fun, he was carried to the bed,
kicking and screaming all the way upstairs.
The minute he was put into bed on one side, he rolled out on the other, and made for the
door, only to be caught up by the tail of his little pajamas (睡衣), and put back again. This lively

Good morning, everyone!
Victor Hugo’s words, “Perseverance, secret of all triumphs,” remind us that genuine success
is reserved for those who persist in the face of adversity. Triumph is rarely handed to us — it is
earned through determination and resilience.
I learned this lesson through my own journey of learning the piano. At first, my fingers
stumbled over the keys, and complex melodies seemed impossible. Frustration crept in, and the
thought of giving up crossed my mind more than once. Yet, I chose to press on, committing to
daily practice even when progress seemed slow. After months of dedication, I finally mastered a
challenging piece. That moment was more than a musical milestone — it was a powerful
testament to what perseverance can achieve.
In academics, athletics, or any walk of life, challenges are unavoidable. But if we choose to
endure — to persist despite setbacks — we open the door to growth and eventual success. Let
Hugo’s wisdom inspire us all — keep going, and triumph will follow!
Thank you for your attention!

Meg could not bear to hear Demi’s cries and ran upstairs. She found John seated beside
Demi’s bed, his face a mask of calm determination. Meg approached quietly and whispered,
“John, is everything okay ” Her voice trembled slightly. John looked at her with understanding
but resolved eyes, seeming to convey that though it was tough, they must help him learn to be
independent. Meg nodded, her eyes glistening with tears. She reached out, gently kissing Demi’s
forehead. John then placed a reassuring hand on Meg’s shoulder and said softly, “It’s okay,

sweetheart. Daddy and Mum love you so much. You’re a big boy now, and you can do this.”(110
words)
With Meg’s gentle comfort and John’s encouragement, Demi gradually became quiet. His
eyes fluttered open, and he looked at his parents with a mixture of fear and courage. Demi
whispered that he would try to sleep by himself. Smiling through her tears, Meg gently tucked
him into bed, ensuring his favorite toy was within reach. Demi squeezed Meg’s hand one last
time before releasing it, a small gesture of bravery. “I love you, Mama. I love you, Papa,” he
murmured, his voice already growing sleepy. As Demi’s breathing slowed and his body relaxed,
John and Meg tiptoed downstairs. For the first time in a long while, they could hear the peaceful
silence of a child sleeping soundly. (117 words)

1.你对这句名言的理解(字面意思的释义,进一步提出名言强调坚持的意义);
John

John:Demi
段落首句的统领作用(情节合理即可,第一段聚焦Meg和John如何让Demi平静下来;
第一段首句:“Meg could not bear to hear Demi’s cries and ran upstairs.”
John
With Meg’s gentle comfort and John’s encouragement, Demi gradually
became quiet.
