Language points
However, these days, something unusual is happening in our town.然而,这些天在我们镇上正发生着一件非同寻常的事。
something unusual 意为“非同寻常的事”。形容词 unusual 修饰不定代词something。单个形容词作定语,一般放在名词的前面。但如果被修饰词是由 some-,any-,every-和no-构成的不定代词时,用作定语的形容词必须放在它所修饰的不定代词的后面。否定句和疑问句中一般用anything,而不用something。

情态动词表示推测
情态动词must,can,could,may和might均可表示推测,可以对过去、现在或将来的情况作出语气强弱不同的推测。
1. 表肯定推测时,语气从弱到强:might → may → could → can → must。
2. 表否定推测时,may not/might not “可能不”,语气较弱;can’t/couldn’t “不可能”,语气较强。
注意:
mustn’t “禁止, 千万不要”,不表推测。如:
John, you mustn’t play football on the street.
3. must 一定,准是。只用于肯定句中。如:
The light is off. He must be sleeping.
4. can多用否定句或疑问句中。could可用于各种句式。如:
The door is locked. He can’t be at home.
5. may/might用于肯定句和否定句中。如:
She told me that she might go to Kunming this winter.
