Writing a story about a misunderstanding in English
Developing ideas部分四位英语学习者讲述了学习过程中语言误解的小故事,为了避免平铺直叙带来的枯燥乏味,故事的最后分别以“Poor Maggie — but why did she try to eat such a big frog?”, “Why did she give me the wrong information?”, “Why did my friend use a negative word about such a nice man?”, “ But there weren't any errors in my paper.”
A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp. The bear launched an attack to the fence, roaring. My mind was blank in panic.(野外遇熊,情况危急,刻不容缓,但“我”却茫然、惊慌失措→故事情节发展到顶峰)
The next minute, the porridge boiled over and ①______________.Jenna ②____________.Thankfully, Jeff ③_________________________the gas quickly.④__________ the stove was a mess now.
Though I wanted to share my ideas with him fully, I failed to do so for fear that I would hold him back.I just kept nodding when he asked me whether it is OK to do this way or that way.(“我”想分享想法,却犹豫不决,内心斗争→为后文冲突出现埋下伏笔)
I ①______________ my performance. But with my mother's encouragement, I gathered my courage ②_______________.When I finally went on the stage, my heart ③_________________.

1.To our surprise, Dad was mad about it, yelling at us, “Don't you know touching is not allowed What on earth have you done?”(父亲大声责问的语言,传达出愤怒→冲突激化)
2.While walking back home, I felt the flowers lining the path look like angels, swaying in the wind, dancing in the sun. I conceived many plans about how to dispose of my earnings.Bounding into the yard, I noticed my parents standing beside the old truck with glum looks.(美丽的景色衬托出“我”兴奋的心情,与下文发生的不愉快的事情形成对比→冲突出现)
After a while, Uncle Paul and his farm were out of sight. It was so ①____________________.The colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees and the late afternoon sunlight ②___________________________________.We were struck by the beauty. When it was getting darker, we ③_________________________.
Developing ideas部分讲述了四位英语学习者学习过程中的misadventures,在故事的讲述中用了不同的衔接手段,如:Not true!(省略);One day, a different teacher...He ...(替代);So I went up to the first floor, but ...(连接词)等。
Uncle Paul ...His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle.(两次出现的单词his就是代替了前文中提到的Uncle Paul)
David is addicted to games now and __________, he won't pass the coming exam.
When visiting him, I noticed for the first time a sense of vulnerability on his face.(When visiting him为When I was visiting him的省略,此省略使句子更加简练。)
I won't attend her birthday party ______________________.
常见的逻辑形式有转折(however, though, whereas, while, but ...)、时间(previously, meanwhile, finally, throughout, until ...)、因果(as,so that, consequently, thus, because, since, on account of, owing to, thanks to ...)、条件(if, as long as, unless, on condition that, on the assumption that ...)和让步(though, although, even if/though, as, nevertheless, whatever, despite ...)。
①______________ I saw him, the exhausted ②__________ patient salesman was still signaling at people for a lift and ③__________ showing them the piece of paper.I pressed my feet down sharply on the pedals in a desperate attempt to offer my help as soon as possible.

Last year, Tony went to China as an exchange student from his hometown England. There he stayed with a Chinese family, whose members treated him well and were always friendly to him. They often showed him around the city and treated him to some traditional Chinese food, which made him feel lucky to meet such a generous and kind family.

“What Lion's head and ants?”
Tony sat at table with his host family, waiting for the dishes to come. However, he saw neither a lion's head nor ants until the last dish was served. It turned out that they are typical dishes for a Chinese dinner!
Actually, Lion's Head is meatballs, while Ants Climbing Trees is Sauteed Vermicelli with Spicy Minced Pork. With a sense of relief, he told them what he had thought. After hearing his words, they couldn't help laughing.

To develop one's taste in English, the most effective way is to read English books extensively. 1 I would like to share some of my experience.
2 It is recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But I had great difficulty in understanding the novel, let alone enjoying it.It's not the vocabulary that troubled me, but rather the way Austen constructs sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed too remote to me at that time.My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway's novel Farewell to Arms. I particularly liked his brief and lively style. So my first suggestion is: 3
However, reading novels is not the only way to improve your English.English essays can at once inform you, entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell's work. Its language is plain, yet you cannot help feeling the elegance and the unique sense of humor. 4 Here comes my second suggestion: Essays are essential.
Never follow other's opinions blindly, however famous or influential the person might be. 5 With that in mind, we are sure to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.
A.They are the unique characteristics of Russell's works.
B.Choose some simple forms of English novels to start with.
C.As a saying goes, one man's meat is another man's poison.
D.My first English novel was Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.
E.You'd better choose contemporary (当代的) novels instead of classical ones.
F.However, one may be at a loss to choose suitable books, especially as a beginner.
G.His simple language enables his philosophy (哲理) within the reach of ordinary people.

However, reading novels is not the only way to improve your English.English essays can at once inform you, entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell's work. Its language is plain, yet you cannot help feeling the elegance and the unique sense of humor.__4__ Here comes my second suggestion: Essays are essential.
Never follow other's opinions blindly, however famous or influential the person might be.__5__ With that in mind, we are sure to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.
