Summer is in full swing, and as the temperature rises our food choices cool down. During the hot days, hot dishes just do not taste as appetizing as they normally do. Fortunately, there are many foods that taste just as good, and even better, when eaten cold.
In recent years, many different kinds of cold noodles have appeared on Chinese menus, including those from foreign countries. They are widely available in restaurants. They are also easy to cook and delicious when eaten straight out of the fridge. Let's take a look at the options!
Sichuan spicy cold noodles. A popular appetizer on Chinese tables, especially in Sichuan. The tongue numbing noodles are pungent, richly sauced and mouth watering. It's one of the best foods to wake up a sleepy stomach in summer.
Shanghai cold noodles. Shanghai cold noodles are much milder in taste. While the noodles are cooled, seasonings, such as peanut butter and vinegar, are added. Toppings usually come in many varieties, served in small dishes.
Naengmyeon. Naengmyeon means “cold noodles” in English, and refers to a dish made of long, thin buckwheat noodles and served cold with half an egg and vegetables. The dish is widely available in South Korean restaurants.
Japanese cold noodles. Soba is the Japanese name for buckwheat. Cold soba noodles are enjoyed for breakfast, lunch and dinner in Japan. Actually, this is one of those dishes that are perfect anywhere on a hot summer's day.
Italian cold noodles. Cold pasta is less heavy and tastes less greasy (油腻的) than the regular hot dish. You can go light on the sauce and dressings without making the taste less pleasant. Pasta is also easy to cook, and tastes good straight out of the fridge.

My aunt Cindy has her own cake shop. She can make nice cakes for special occasions, such as weddings and birthdays. I spent a week last summer helping her in the shop. Making a nice cake is harder than I thought it would be.
I practised for hours in Aunt Cindy's shop. I made little colored dots on a piece of wax paper (蜡纸). Unluckily, I could not get the dots to be the same shape or size. I decided to take a break from making the dots, so I helped move cakes. However, that was not easy for me, either. I dropped a cake when trying to take it out of the freezer (冰箱) by myself. Luckily one of Aunt Cindy's assistants (助手) was there. He saved the cake from hitting the floor.
It takes a whole team to make a huge cake. That's one of the most important things I learned. Each person on the team has to be great at his or her job. Aunt Cindy designs the cakes on paper, Larry does the mixing and baking, and assistants carve and put frosting on the cakes. Aunt Cindy and Larry do most of the decorating while the assistants help make small parts like flowers and figures. Building a big cake is like playing a team sport. If one person doesn't do his or her job well, the whole team pays for that.
Even though I was not much help to my aunt, I'm glad I spent the week in Aunt Cindy's shop. Designing cakes takes more than just baking skills. It takes art and painting skills too. Now when I see a really nice cake, I don't think of eating it first. Instead, I look at it and wonder how many hours it took to make.
4.What can my aunt make nice cakes for
A.Special events. B.Daily needs.
C.Simple lives. D.Important people.
5.Why did the author take a break from putting colored dots on wax paper
A.Because she practised for hours and became bored.
B.Because she could not make the dots good enough for a cake.
C.Because Aunt Cindy did not want her to make any more dots.
D.Because Aunt Cindy wanted her to help somewhere else.
6.Who designs the cakes on paper
A.Aunt Cindy. B.Larry.
C.Assistants. D.The author.
7.What was the main reason the author was glad to have spent a week in her aunt's shop
A.She got to practise making colored dots.
B.She learned the importance of teamwork.
C.She got to take a cake out of the freezer.
D.She learned art and painting skills.

Food scientists studied what Americans eat. They found that most of the calories people eat come from ultra processed foods. Processed foods include large amounts of sugar, salt, oil, fat, and other additives. Highly processed foods are a large part of the American diet. Scientists link them to obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and other physical diseases.
Some scientists say these foods are not just tempting but also are addictive. Other scientists disagree. A recent journal article explored the science behind food addiction. It also asked if processed foods might contribute to overeating and obesity.
One opinion was that certain foods did create addictive behavior. At the top of the list were pizza, chocolate, potato chips, cookies, ice cream, French fries, and cheeseburgers. These foods share much in common with addictive substances. The bloodstream absorbs them. They light up parts of the brain that regulate reward, emotion, and motivation.
Another doctor says these foods are not addictive. The reason is that processed foods do not change minds the way smoking a cigarette or drinking a glass of wine can affect the mind. Mind changing substances cause a sensation in the brain that processed foods do not, he says.
This doctor says that food industry drives overeating. It markets more than 20,000 new products every year. People have access to an endless variety of foods and drinks. People are urged to buy and eat. “It is the diversity of foods that is so appealing and causing the problem,” he says.
But you do long for processed food. If you want to kick a processed food habit, you have to do something about it. One idea is to keep a record of the foods you are thirsty for. Keep processed foods out of your house. And, of course, eat healthier foods.
8.What can we learn about ultra processed foods
A.They are healthy.
B.They are nutritious.
C.They are rich in calories.
D.They are green.
9.What does the underlined word “tempting” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Amazing. B.Entertaining.
C.Annoying. D.Inviting.
10.What may cause the problem of overeating according to Paragraph 5
A.Food variety. B.Food brand.
C.People's preference. D.Social needs.
11.What would be a suitable title for the text
A.Do you like processed foods
B.Are processed foods addictive
C.Are doctors for processed foods
D.Do you want to kick a bad habit
D
Despite the fact that burgers, chips and fries are known as some of the most unhealthy food we can eat, they are still the most popular food.
There are a few reasons behind that. Firstly, junk food is generally easy to get and take with you. This convenience is a major draw for many, especially people who are always on the go. Fast food restaurants can be found outside many schools and workplaces, providing meals in under a minute.
Secondly, junk food contains a lot of added sugar and fat. This kind of food causes our brain to send out certain chemicals, which produce the feeling of relaxation, pleasure and enjoyment. That's why such food is called “comfort food”.
Thirdly, our ancestors didn't have such easy access to the huge variety of food we come across every day. They didn't have the convenience of having food as easily as we do. So they made it a habit to eat as much as they could to survive and protect themselves from the hard natural conditions. The cave mentality (心理) is passed down to us, which makes us believe that we can never have enough food that is high in sugar and fat, no matter how crazily we eat.
Besides, when we are too worried and tired to relax, our body produces cortisol (皮质醇), which increases the sugar content in the blood, so it can be used as energy to aid in fat and carbohydrate metabolism (碳水化合物代谢). Additionally, it is also found to increase hunger. That's the reason why when we're thinking about unpleasant things, we prefer foods that are high in sugar, fat and carbohydrate, that is to say unhealthy food.
12.Why are fast food restaurants mentioned
A.To show they take up the best site.
B.To show they provide good service.
C.To show they are famous for their taste.
D.To show they make junk food easy to get.
13.What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 4
A.We need all kinds of food.
B.Our ancestors lived a hard life.
C.We are born to eat more than we need.
D.It is difficult for us to change our habits.
14.What is a cause of the increase of sugar content in our body
A.Too much stress.
B.A wish for food.
C.A fast metabolic rate.
D.Not having enough energy.
15.What is the text mainly about
A.How harmful junk food is.
B.Why fast food is so delicious.
C.How we can develop a healthy lifestyle.
D.Why we love unhealthy food so much.

He dashed across the finishing line and won the fourth prize. Thinking he would let his sister down, Ali couldn’t help sobbing.
