The 14th National Games held in Xi'an has triggered great interest — not only in sports and fitness, but also in the host city itself. If you are planning a tour of Xi'an taking less than 3 days, you'll want to hit all the following highlights.
The Terracotta Army
The Terracotta Army is not just China's premier historical attraction but one of the greatest discoveries of the 20th century, which was constructed by China's First Emperor Qin Shi Huang of the Qin Dynasty (221 BC-207 BC). One of China's most famous Buddhist pagodas, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda was built in the Tang Dynasty(618-907) for the study of Buddhist scriptures. One of the main functions of the pagoda was to store sutras (经文) brought to China from India by the famous monk and traveller Xuan Zang. It was built with layers of bricks and has a grand structure and appearance. It is exemplary of traditional Chinese architecture.

As a student of International Relations and Chinese, I have been living in China for the past three years. Xizang was a region I was eager to travel to but its remoteness and my inability to find the right time to go delayed my journey. After a few e mails back and forth with my dad in the UK, who doubted my choice, we decided to take a pause in our lives to begin our journey early in the morning of July 3rd.
We started our journey on Saturday morning at the Guangzhou train station. It was a good thing that we had secured a couple of soft seats as we were about to begin the journey. We started the first part of the journey, admiring the mysterious mountains of south China. The next day it changed quite suddenly to the dry landscape of central west China as we passed through Shaanxi and Gansu Provinces. That evening we arrived in Qinghai Province, where we hoped for the Xining Lhasa train.
We were greeted on the train with Tibetan yogurt. The following afternoon we arrived in Lhasa. Later that day, we started our journey to the Qomolangma base camp by road from Lhasa. Along the way we stopped to admire the beautiful and large river, the beautiful clouds and huge freshwater lake that is one of the three largest sacred lakes in Xizang. All the beauty contributed to making a picturesque countryside Xizang.
About a week later, we arrived at the Qomolangma base camp in the afternoon. We were staying in a guesthouse just next to the base camp and then we headed straight outside to see the wonderful Mt Qomolangma. The tip of the mountain could be seen through clouds, astonishing us with its unbelievable height and wonderful scenery. The clouds cleared away and we watched the sunset over the top of the mountain. Each of us was really impressed by Mt Qomolangma's magnificence (壮丽).

B.High but flat.
C.Impressive and amazing.
D.Dangerous and scaring.
7.What is the author's main purpose in writing the text

B.To introduce a memorable trip.

The village of Misfat al Abriyeen has changed its fortunes by transforming mud brick homes into fine hotels. The village of 800 people, located on the cliffs of Oman's “Grand Canyon”, opened its narrow streets six years ago to foreigners and locals seeking adventure in the deserts and green corners of the Gulf area.
Villager Yacoub al Abri said it all started in 2010 when his uncle suggested they take another look at the mud houses that had lain ignored for years in the ancient settlement about three hours' drive from the capital Muscat. The owners had abandoned the centuries old homes, fearing they could topple,_and moved to the opposite side of the village where they built new accommodation.
The brown walled homes, made of mud bricks with palm leave roofs, were turned into simple but elegant inns with wood furniture and handcrafts made using skills handed down from their ancestors. “ We started with only five rooms, then we increased the number and bought other old houses. Today we have 15 rooms and there are plans to continue expanding until we reach 50,” Abri said.
At an altitude of more than 1,000 meters, the tiny village which is home to the Abri tribe is a charming collection of traditional houses located along dozens of small alleys (小巷) overlooking lands bursting with banana plants and citrus and palm trees. It is part of a region known as the Grand Canyon of Oman where tourists can hike the rocky mountains and valleys, and explore the old ways of local people. The region is also famed for its centuries old stories that are still widely told in similar villages across the country.
Renoda, a Dutch psychologist living in Muscat, was visiting with three of her friends. “It's perhaps the 10th time that I have visited this hotel since last year. I come here for a night or two every month seeking calm, relaxation and comfort,”she told AFP.
8.What does the underlined word “topple” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Move. B.Fall.
C.Disappear. D.Shrink.
9.What are the rooms of the village hotels like
A.Splendid. B.Outdated.
C.Ordinary. D.Traditional.
10.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A.The unique lifestyle of the local people.
B.The special situation of the small village.
C.The reasons for the popularity of the village.
D.The introduction of the history of the village.
11.What can be inferred about Renoda
A.She lives a stressful life in the city.
B.She enjoys adventurous travelling.

My granddad often helped me make a tool to catch fish when I was young and we would spend hours along a river. It was lovely for both of us then. Many more of today's grandparents have a growing sense of adventure. And a trend is catching on: skip gen travel — grandparents taking fun filled vacations with grandkids without their parents along.
A survey found that 83% of grandparents put travel with their grandkids as the number one thing when they retire. Skip gen travel gets popular for good reason. Kids have their lives enriched and learn outside classrooms. This is also a time of talking and sharing ideas.
“How grandparents talk to children is different from how parents talk to them. Actually, I feel on a more equal footing with my grandchildren than I do with my own children,” Annie Collins, a travel architect and also part of the trend, says. “Kids away from their parents are more open to ideas and willing to express themselves. It's not just kids gaining from travelling. Who gets the most out of this You might think it's them but it's us.” According to a study by the Cleveland Clinic, grandparents who help watch and spend time with grandkids may actually live longer than their peers (同龄人).
It's also important to recognize that grandparents often have more time to travel. Unlike their children, who may still be in the pursuit of a personal career that offers limited time off, grandparents are often retired and likely have a different viewpoint on life, prioritizing experiences and family. So knowing the kids are in great hands, moms and dads will have a bit of time to themselves — some much needed leisure time alone to rest and recharge their batteries.
However, skip gen travel is not for every grandparent. After all, grandparents are worn out with years and not so energetic. They surely treasure the chance to form close ties with their grandchildren, but it's wiser to say no when only the youth could enjoy themselves, for the travel should be a win for everyone involved.
12.Why does the author mention fishing experiences with his granddad
A.To lead in the trend of skip gen travel.
B.To share the pleasure in going fishing.
C.To stress the importance of family ties.
D.To show the growing interest in adventure.
13.Which of the following may Annie Collins agree
A.Many parents are too strict with children.
B.Grandparents benefit more from skip gen travel.
C.Spending time with grandparents is better for kids.
D.Children become mature when away from parents.
14.What do we know about the parents whose kids are on skip gen travel
A.They enjoy the moment to relax.
B.They feel less anxious and stressed.
C.They miss their kids very much.
D.They look forward to their own trips.
15.What does the author suggest grandparents do
A.Get kids involved in travel planning.
B.Strengthen the bond with grandchildren.
C.Reduce skip gen travel appropriately.
D.Make decisions in both sides' interests.

One sunny afternoon, Jane, a seven year old girl whose parents went to their farm to harvest corns, was left home with their dog, Yeller. Feeling rather bored, she decided to go out for an adventure alone. With a toy gun in her hand and a whistle around her neck, Jane crossed a large area of grassland into the woods before she realized that she was lost.
Sitting on a rock and wondering what to do, Jane began crying. After a while, she decided to walk along a wide path lined with tall trees and thick bushes. It was getting dark, but she still couldn't find her way home. Suddenly, she heard a strange noise, which was actually the sound of wind blowing leaves. She ran quickly in the woods until there was no road ahead but a river. She lost her toy gun while running. Cold and scared, Jane sat down near the river and fell asleep against a tree.
Her parents were back from work but could not find their daughter. Deeply worried about Jane's safety, they locked the door and went out to search for her.
Their dog, Yeller, was left at home. He noticed something was wrong because it was dark but there was nobody home. He sensed that Jane was in danger. He tried to get out, but the door was locked. He jumped through a window, looked in the fields but couldn't find her anywhere. However, from the ground came a familiar smell as he lowered his head. He followed the smell and walked across the grassland until he found the toy gun. But Jane was not there. The dog circled around the woods, barking loudly into the air.

第二节(参考范文)
Jane opened her eyes and heard Yeller barking nearby. Excitedly, she tried to yell to make herself heard but in vain because her voice was too weak. Suddenly, it occurred to her that she brought with her a whistle. She blew it with all her strength and the whistle pierced through the night sky. Yeller heard it and rushed towards the river. They were very glad and Yeller jumped around and licked her face.
Weak and hungry, Jane walked back home with Yeller leading the way. Approaching home, she found her parents waiting anxiously out of the door. They were just about to call the police when they heard Yeller’s barking. Seeing their daughter and dog coming back, they burst into tears of relief. That night,Jane had a large piece of cake while Yeller had a hero’s supper: a huge meal of steak.
