The room felt electric with excitement. Tang Wensheng, a young
interpreter, was about to start a big career. The leader of Guyana, Prime
Minister Burnham, was coming. But just a few hours before, Tang knew
nothing about him or his country.
She almost panicked. Then, she thought of her favorite way to learn: from
books. She hurried to the library, looking for answers. Two books became her
helpers— one about the history of Guyana, and one about Prime Minister
Burnham. Hours passed quickly as she read about new places and people.
When she walked into the meeting, she felt much more confident. Reading had
turned a scary situation into a good chance to learn.
To stay sharp when she wasn't working on important jobs, Tang found a
creative way to practice— reading English detective stories. These interesting
stories helped her keep her language skills strong and her vocabulary wide.
Reading was not only for learning new things, but also for staying in top form.
Later, she worked at the China Daily newspaper. Every day, she had to
understand lots of new information from around the world. It reminded her that
she always had more to learn. However, the many books she had read gave her
a strong base. Her trust in reading became like an anchor in a sea of
information.

“Books teach you to be humble,” she said years later. “They show you
how much you don't know, and that makes you want to keep learning.” Now,
when AI is becoming so important, Tang still believes in reading. “If we don’ t
keep reading and learning,” she said, “we might get left behind as the world
changes.” Reading, she proved, is more than just preparation; it's a map that
helps us find our way through life.
24. What was Tang's initial reaction when she heard about Prime Minister
Burnham's arrival
A. Confident in her interpretation.
B. Eager to read her favourite books.

The new service promises steep discounts and 30-minute delivery across
major categories, aiming to capture younger consumers and expand into lower-
tier markets.
Alibaba has introduced its one-hour delivery service “Taobao Flash”
nationwide ahead of schedule, stepping up its push in China’s increasing on-
demand retail race.Originally set to launch on May 6, the platform went live
across the country on May 2following strong uptake during its pilot run in
more than 50 cities.
The upgraded service is backed by Alibaba’s food delivery arm Ele. me
and offers aggressive consumer rewards, including free drinks, cash coupons,
and discounted meals. The company said it aims to combine“e-commerce
pricing with instant delivery,” with flash-sale deals across categories like food,
groceries, pharmacy, electronics, and clothing now available within 30 minutes.
Within 48 hours of the launch, Ele.me's delivery orders hit record highs in

13cities. Sales of Cotti Coffee jumped tenfold in 24 hours, topping the
platform's coffee category. Over the May Day holiday, discounted drinks like
milk tea and coffee surged more than 110% year-on-year, driven by flash deals
and time-limited offers. The accelerated launch comes as rivals like
and Meituan increase investments in instant delivery, expanding from their core
strengths in e-commerce and food, separately.
All three are competing for an advantage over others in a sector expected
to surpass 2 trillion yuan ($275 billion) by 2030, as consumers increasingly
demand faster fulfillment and deeper discounts.
A Taobao Flash project spokesperson told The Beijing News: “Our
current launch minimizes customer costs, freeing up resources for aggressive
consumer subsidies(补贴).”
During the Labor Day holiday, Ele. me reported a sharp increase in late-
night orders from travelers, with purchases between 10 p. m. and 5 a. m.
accounting for more than 30% of total orders——1.6 times higher than local
users, according to company data. Younger travelers fueled much of the
demand, using 20% to 30% discounts to have snacks and drinks delivered from
tourist hotspots to their hotels.
Industry analysts say Taobao’s launch has driven traffic and engagement
well beyond initial expectations, helping brands reach more consumers——
especially in lower-tier markets.

The increasing conflicts between humans and Tibetan brown bears on the
6
{#{QQABCQgl4wAYgAYACQ66RQGoC0gQkIGSJYougRAYqAZKCAFABCA=}#}
Tibetan Plateau are a growing concern, potentially fueled by climate change
impacting the animals’ traditional living spaces. This interruption leads to bears
seeking food and shelter in human settlements, resulting in livestock loss,
property damage, and even posing risks of serious injury or death to both
humans and animals.
To ease these conflicts, a team at Wuhan University in China, led by Peng
Yuchen, has developed an innovative AI-controlled device. This system aims
to identify bears using complex image recognition and turn them away with a
targeted spray of a harmless but unpleasant mixture of capsaicin (辣椒素) and
menthol(薄荷醇).
The AI model was trained on a vast dataset of over 1,000 images of local
wildlife, including over 600 featuring bears, alongside yaks, antelopes, and even
humans.Engineered to distinguish bears from other species, the device consists
of a camera, a small computer running the AI model, a solar panel for power,
and a lithium (锂) battery capable of operating autonomously for up to 30 days.
The spray, when activated, can reach bears up to 13 meters away.
According to the test findings, the machine can identify a bear 91.4% of
the time it registered one, and detect a bear 93.6% of the time one was present.
However, there was a minimal (1.8%) risk of accidental spraying of humans
within range.
Some experts note that the field tests were conducted in controlled
environments, raising questions about real— world applicability. “Bears are
highly adaptive, and I doubt a single spray will deter them long-term,” says
Dave Garshelis, who runs a group focused on bears at the International Union
for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.“They’ll probably find other
ways to access human settlements and just avoid the machine itself.” He adds.
He says that the project reminds him of US park rangers shooting bears
with rubber bullets to keep them away from people, which worked up to a point.
“The bears learned to stay away from people in uniforms carrying guns, but
recognized that there was no danger of other people,” says Garshelis.
32. What caused the rise in human-bear tension on the Tibetan Plateau based
on the passage
A. Decreased food supply for humans.
B. Increased human tourism in bear territory.
C. Bear numbers exceeding the land's capacity.
D. Shifting weather patterns affecting bear habitats.
33. What can be inferred about the device in paragraph 4
A. It works reliably in most cases.
B. It requires constant human supervision.
C. It puts human safety ahead of accuracy.
D. It performs better in controlled environments.
7
{#{QQABCQgl4wAYgAYACQ66RQGoC0gQkIGSJYougRAYqAZKCAFABCA=}#}
34. What is Dave Garshelis’s attitude towards the AI-controlled device
A. Hopeful. B. Skeptical. C. Indifferent. D. Hesitant.
35. What's the best title for the passage
A. AI System Uses Spray to Keep Bears Away
B. Saving Tibetan Bears with a Vast Database
C. Balancing Tech & Tradition: Saving the Bears
D. Low-Cost Tech Removes Human-Bear Conflicts

Taking notes and keeping them organized is an important part of
schooling and the work worlds. You’ ll need organized notes for studying,
writing essays and your assignments. Keeping them organized will not only
help you with these tasks, but it will also help you remember your material
easily. 36 . In this passage, you will learn how to take notes and
effectively organize them.
Mix different styles of note-taking. There are lots of different ways of
recording information. You can use one style or a mix of a few. Handwritten
notes work best for classes that have to do with numbers, equations, and
formulas. You can also collect any lecture notes and power-point slides that
your instructor makes available. 37 .
Store your notes in one place. If you' re storing your notes all over the
place, it's going to be very difficult to organize them for exams and essays
when the time comes.Don't just write your notes down in whatever notebook
you happen to have nearby or you' re never going to find those notes again.
38 . You don't want to mix up your physics notes with your maths notes!
Have separate folders for each class. If you keep all your notes on your
computer, make sure that even there you have separate spaces for your notes.
39 For example, you might have a folder for your research paper, a
folder for your information about previous field studies.
40 . You don’ t want to have to keep trying to figure out how
and where you record certain information. This will make your organization
more difficult in the long run. If you keep to one way of recording notes and
specific places for each class, you' ll be much more prepared than otherwise.
A. Stay consistent.
B. Take clear and concise notes.
C. You can separate your notes by subject.
D. These can be valuable notes for essays and exams.
E. Therefore, using effective note-taking tools is of great help.
F. You don't want to back through and dig through your computer files.
G. However, the challenge lies in developing a system that works for you.

In recent years, various countries have explored approaches to developing
clean energy in Antarctica, 56 solar and wind energy being the primary
focus. 57 , the extreme conditions and shortage of technologies make it
tough for solar and wind power generation equipment to maintain stable and
efficient operation.
Recently, a clean energy system 58 (tailor) for polar conditions has
been put into operation in China's Qinling station in Antarctica.
This is a big achievement because it 59 (great) lowers the station’ s
need for fossil fuels and its possible harm to the environment. The
breakthrough means China has become the first country 60 (achieve) the
large-scale operation of a clean energy system under extreme Antarctic
conditions.
According to the lead scientist, Sun Hongbin, 56, this project marks a
major advance in China's efforts to explore green energy solutions in polar
regions.
Since the launch of the system on March 1, it 61 (replace)
traditional diesel(柴油) power sources, 62 (provide) uninterrupted zero-
carbon power for the research equipment and essential living facilities at
Qinling station, which was established in February last year as China’s 63
(five) Antarctic research station.
Solar and wind power now provide about 60 percent of the total energy
that the system can produce. In situations 64 there isn't enough wind or
sun, hydrogen that has been stored can be used to provide extra power.
Sun stressed the primary challenges in ensuring the 65 (stable)
and safety of the equipment. Still, he hopes to establish a 20,000-square-meter
Antarctic extreme environment simulation laboratory in Shanxi to enhance
future research.

The first time I saw Frost, the Arctic fox, she was a shaking white shape
under an old, metal trash bin behind our school cafeteria. It was the coldest part
of January, when Alaska’ s winter wind cut through clothes like knives. Her
left paw was stuck in a thrown-away soda can, the broken edges cutting into
her fur. Our eyes met— her look bright with fear, mine full of worry.
Mom always told me, “Wild animals aren’t like dogs or cats, Clara,”
whenever I tried to help street cats. But Frost's heavy breathing made my heart
hurt. I crouched down slowly, taking off my scarf. “It's okay,” I said softly,
dropping pieces of my half-eaten lunch toward her. She jumped back but smelt
the food carefully. Every day after school for a week, I came back with food,
moving a little closer each time until she let me pull the can off her paw.
As winter deepened, Frost slowly became my secret friend. Every
morning before school, I left pieces of chicken near the trash bin. At first, she
only came out when I was far away. But by February, she would sit just three
steps from me, her white fur shining under the pale sunlight. My classmates
thought I was crazy, but I didn’t care. There was something magical about
earning a wild animal's trust.
One afternoon, something unexpected happened. Frost followed me all the
way to my house! My heart raced as she stopped at the edge of our yard. Mom
saw her through the kitchen window; “Is that... a fox ” she asked, her voice
mixed with surprise and worry. But when Frost gently pawed at a fallen
pinecone (松果 ), even Mom had to smile. “Just don’ t let her inside,” she
warned, though her eyes were soft.
Spring brought new surprises. Frost started “helping” around our home.
She chased away rabbits from Mom's garden and barked loudly when bears
wandered too close.Sometimes she brought dead mice as “gifts”, which made
Mom scream but secretly pleased her. Still, Frost remained wild. She never let

Dear Mr. Smith,
I'm Li Hua, an exchange student from China. I am writing to propose
the establishment of a Chinese Cultural Enrichment Society at our school.
In our school, an increasing number of students are curious about
China driven by the growing fascination with Chinese culture on campus.
This society can offer a platform where students engage in activities like
Chinese calligraphy shows, tea ceremonies and traditional festival
celebrations. It will certainly serve as a bridge for English students to
experience Chinese culture closely, allowing hands-on exploration and
promoting cross-cultural exchange. Hopefully, the Chinese Cultural
Enrichment Society could motivate learning and unity at our school as well as
intensify mutual understanding of China and the UK.
Looking forward to your favorable consideration.

One midnight during another April storm, we heard scratching at the
door. Seeing Frost trembling outside, we wrapped her in a warm blanket
and let her stay in our porch, shielding her from the heavy rain and wind.
She curled up next to me, her body trembling slightly from the cold but
relaxing in our presence. We shared a silent bond, a sign to the friendship
we had built over the months. In the morning, as the storm stopped, Frost
stood up, stretched, and looked at us with gratitude in her eyes. Knowing it

stronger and healthier, disappearing into the forest with a final glance
back.
On my graduation day, Frost appeared at the school fence one last time.
She stood there, her once weak body now strong and fit, her white fur
shining in the sunlight. As I walked closer, I saw sadness in her eyes,
reflecting my own feeling of loss. She gave a soft bark, almost like she was
saying goodbye. I knelt down and spoke gently to her. I knew she was ready
to go back to her wild home, to wander freely. I watched her turn and
disappear into the woods. I knew our time together was over, but the
connection we had would never fade.

M: Good morning. Today we' re talking to Bangari Naathai, responsible for
creating the women's movement in Uganda and who has just won a Global
Peace Prize. Tell us your story, Bangari.
W: Well, ten years ago, I asked the government for 15 million tree seedlings
to improve the conditions of our country's poorest communities.
M: What did they say
W: I think they thought I was crazy, but they gave me them anyway!
M: And how many trees has the movement planted so far
W: We've now planted more than 20 million trees in 30 different countries
across the world.
M: And what did you get the Peace Prize for
W: For promoting economic development throughout Africa.
M: How has the tree project helped the people of your country
W: Women and children are the most affected by poverty and these are the
people I wanted to help. We decided to set up some tree nurseries run by
women. This was very successful, and now we have more than 8,000
throughout the continent.
M: That's quite an achievement, Bangari. Congratulations and keep up the
good work!
W: Thank you, Michael.
Text 10
Good afternoon, everybody, and thank you for giving me your time
today. Firstly I’d like to talk to you about the kind of people we' re looking
for at Pacific Clothing, and finally I'd like to tell you what we offer you if you
come to work for us. All kinds of people work in a wide range of jobs in the
clothing industry, from drivers to office workers and artists. Right now we' re
on the lookout for scientists, particularly to work with the dyes we use to
colour cloth. And to design the patterns and choose the colours which are
going to appeal to consumers, we have a strong design team. We' re not
looking for any new designers at present but chances may arise in the future.
However,at the moment we are looking for engineers to work in the
production department. And we' re currently employing accountants. They' re
not usually associated with fashion but let me tell you, they perform a vital
task. But that's not to say that, if you have qualifications in another field, for
example, sales, we won't be needing someone like you in the future.
