1.“SHARKS: DANGEROUS OR ENDANGERED?”
1.Jaws was a great success, attracting huge audiences and winning many awards.
2.People just wanted them killed.
常见的程度性副词还有:much, little, very, rather, so, too, quite, perfectly, enough, extremely, even等。
3.He came to see people as a danger to sharks, rather than the other way round.
赏析:本句中的“rather than the other way round”照应前半句中的“see people as a danger to sharks”,表示与其截然相反的情况,表达简洁又暗含强烈的谴责之意。
①Taking everything into consideration, ________________________________.
②I waited an hour ____________________.
③All in all, young people should be forward looking ____________________________.
1.Many people who saw the film started to believe that sharks were bad animals that ate humans.
2.Fortunately, not everyone who watched the film Jaws became afraid of sharks — some became interested in understanding them.
①Put simply, potential is your natural ability_________________ when you try hard enough.
②_____________________________ must often overcome many challenges along the way.
③But __________________ is happy about the new method of expression.
1.第二段第一句“People have always been scared of sharks, but Jaws made things worse.”
The world's animal populations have decreased by more than two-thirds since 1970, according to a recent research from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The London group provided information on 32,000 wildlife populations which included more
①
than 5,000 species. The researchers found that population sizes had reduced by 69 percent on average. They said the loss of forests, human exploitation (开发) of the environment, pollution, and climate change were great causes of the loss. Land-use change is still the biggest threat to wildlife. However, the researchers added, “If we cannot limit warming to 1.5℃, climate change is likely to become the primary cause of biodiversity loss in the coming years.”
Wildlife populations in Latin American and the Caribbean Sea area were greatly affected. The research showed a 94 percent drop in those areas in over 50 years. Wildlife populations in river and lake habitats decreased the most. Freshwater populations have reduced by an average of 83 percent since 1970. For example, one population of pink river dolphins in the Amazon River area of Brazil fell by 65 percent between 1994 and 2016.
These findings are a red flag that warns of a larger system failure on the horizon. Even one species' population reduction can affect other species, eventually impacting the ecosystem's ability to function. Humans depend on a stable climate, predictable weather patterns, and productive farmland and fisheries to thrive (蓬勃发展), but the current trends are severe enough to threaten many life-sustaining systems.
Our future depends on reversing (扭转) the loss of nature just as much as it depends on addressing climate change. And you can't solve one without solving the other. Everyone has a role in reversing these trends, from individuals to companies to governments. undoubtedly continue to fall, driving wildlife to extinction and threatening the wholeness of the ecosystems on which we all depend.

Along the Ulungur River in Altay, the northernmost area of Xinjiang, lives a species of beaver. This animal, which feeds on the shrubs (灌木) that grow near the river, has a strong sense of territory (领地) and won't leave its surroundings easily. So if people ruin the river, the beavers' homes will be destroyed and they will no longer survive. But fortunately for these picky animals, they have a responsible protector, Beaver Princess, Chu Wenwen.
Chu had a very different childhood. She was introduced to the wild at the age of 2 by her father who is an animal conservationist. So when the other children were reciting ancient Chinese poems and English alphabet, Chu was working hard to remember the names of different animals and plants. So instead of being a white-collar worker after graduating from Beijing Forestry University, Chu decided to return home and follow in her father's footsteps.
In Chu's hometown of Altay, there are 466 species of wild animals and 74 state-protected ones living in the surrounding 110,000 square kilometers. In 2018, Chu founded the Altay Natural Conservation Association which is aimed at animal protection.
The first public project Chu started was for beavers.“We took the beavers as a priority because they were greatly endangered at that time,” Chu said.“The beavers, which can build dams, are known as ‘engineers’ in the animal kingdom.Their dams can change water levels, gather fish, attract birds to nest and bring insects,” Chu explained.
Chu developed the “Beavers Canteen” program which calls on people to donate to help plant a species of shrub that is an important food resource for the beavers. The shrub is also the building material of the beavers. The clever animal makes full use of it.

When you go on vacation next time, make sure to take lots of pictures of the wildlife you see. These photos can help save different types of wildlife because of a new field called “imageomies”. Imageomies uses computers to study pictures of wildlife and learn information from them.
Until recently, scientists didn't have the technology to analyze (分析) the data in wildlife photos. But now, machine learning and computer vision are helping researchers unlock valuable information hidden in these images.
There are platforms where people can share their wildlife photos, like eBird, iNaturalist and Wildbook. These platforms help scientists keep track of different species and create databases. If you have rare photos of wildlife, it's a good idea to share them on these platforms.
Scientists have limited time and resources to study all endangered wildlife in the world. By using artificial intelligence (人工智能) to analyze public photos, we can learn more about different species and their behaviors. This technology can even help us find things in photos that humans might miss.
It's important to use the collected information responsibly and protect it from poachers (偷猎者). If we do that, imageomies can not only help save wildlife but also contribute to other fields like medicine and agriculture.

Being eco-conscious (生态意识) doesn't have to stress you out or expand your budget.Learn how to be kind to the Earth while also enjoying life. Here are some small but significant steps you can take.
Go LED with your lighting. There are several benefits of switching to energy-saving light bulbs (灯泡). 9 Though the upfront cost might be more than traditional bulbs, the average savings on LED bulbs is $75 a year.Plus, you won't be spending nearly as much time changing burnt-out bulbs as you used to: LED bulbs can last years or even decades, depending on the type you buy.
10 On those days when you're out of patience and low on time, don't blame yourself if you have to use paper plates and cups instead of your dishwasher — especially if you're hosting a large crowd. Generally, dishwashers are required to design to use no more than 5 gallons of water per cycle and 307 kWh/year. 11 So in this point, using recyclable paper plates can save more.
Turn off water when you are not using it.Every drop does count when it comes to water usage. 12 Don't ignore this little time.If everyone does in this way, we can save a lot of water every day. There is also great low-flow equipment for showers and toilets. But if you don't want to change them, you can just switch them off when you're not using them. 13
A.Don't always use paper plates.
B.One of them is saving money.
C.This is a good way to save water.
D.Don't feel guilty about using paper plates.
E.Besides, a good dishwasher can save more electricity.

So instead of being a white collar worker after graduating from Beijing Forestry University, Chu decided to return home and follow in her father's footsteps.
In Chu's hometown of Altay, there are 466 species of wild animals and 74 state protected ones living in the surrounding 110,000 square kilometers.

These photos can help save different types of wildlife because of a new field called “imageomies”.Imageomies uses computers to study pictures of wildlife and learn information from them.
Scientists have limited time and resources to study all endangered wildlife in the world.By using artificial intelligence (人工智能) to analyze public photos, we can learn more about different species and their behaviors. This technology can even help us find things in photos that humans might miss.
It's important to use the collected information responsibly and protect it from poachers (偷猎者).If we do that, imageomies can not only help save wildlife but also contribute to other fields like medicine and agriculture.
