In May 2019, a friend who had previously been involved in the Restless Development Sierra Leone Business Brains project encouraged me to apply for the “Saving Lives Ⅱ” project.Seeing this as an opportunity to move closer to my aim of working in the medical field in the near future, I eagerly seized the chance.Fortunately, my performance during the interview led to me being awarded the role.
Following the basic training, I was sent to volunteer in Kurubonla, a remote community located in the northern region of Sierra Leone. This assignment presented challenges such as limited road access and communication networks. At first, I felt concerned about being sent there, but with a determined mindset, I set out on the journey, driven by a passion to contribute to my country's development and to push my personal boundaries.
As I got to know the community, I quickly realized that the challenges extended beyond language barriers and cultural differences; there was also a sense of isolation from my peers. However, I refused to allow these challenges to stop me.I threw myself in my duties, working together with local leaders and community members to identify the most pressing needs.Together, we carried out the projects aimed at improving healthcare, education, and infrastructure (基础设施).Additionally, I organized workshops and training courses to share my knowledge and skills with the locals.
Over time, I witnessed the positive impact of our collective efforts.Healthcare facilities improved, the number of students in schools increased, and the overall quality of life in the community showed signs of improvement. These achievements were not solely mine; they were a testament to the cooperative spirit and commitment of the entire community.

Harris County expands the mobile library program with an addition of the fourth Curiosity Cruiser (巡航车).Instead of sweet music through a speaker system attached to the roof, the sides of the cruisers are decorated with cartoon images of superheroes. And the vehicles are not filled with frozen treats, but rather a collection of books, electronics and other materials that can help children learn.
“When kids see a cruiser coming into their community, they start running for it,” Melton, the director of the Houston-area library system, said.“They're excited about it.They're excited about reading and getting a book they can take home.”
Melton said the Curiosity Cruisers program has distributed (分发) more than 69,000 books to more than 55,000 Houston-area children, focusing on reaching low-income parts of the region where there are no nearby public libraries.Children up to age 18 can take home one book per visit while engaging with other on-site learning materials such as laptops, 3D printers and courses on robotics and other STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines.
The newest delivery truck, equipped and donated by the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation with financial support from local companies and other charities, will enable the mobile library program to make an additional 12 stops per month.“It is a huge deal,” Melton said of adding a fourth cruiser.“There is a great need for literary services in Harris County.Even with the efforts we're putting forth, it's really like a drop in the sea.So the more vehicles we can have, the more impact we can have.”
Julie Finck, the president of the foundation behind, said the idea was to promote reading and STEM skills in communities where there are not libraries, even in schools.
Three out of ten Houston children failed to meet the minimum, end-of-third-grade reading standard in the most recent statewide STAAR test, according to Finck. She also said research shows that if children aren't reading skilfully by the end of the third grade, they are four times as likely as their peers (同龄人) to end up dropping out of school.
8.Why do kids get excited when they see a Curiosity Cruiser
A.They can get a book free of charge.
B.They can buy frozen treats from the cruiser.

D.They can meet their favorite superheroes.

B.The number of library vehicles is sufficient.
C.More support is needed from the government.
D.They have donated too much for the vehicles.
10.What is the main goal of the Curiosity Cruisers program
A.To raise funds for the poor.
B.To bridge the educational gap.
C.To better people's living standards.
D.To build more libraries in Houston.
11.What is the point of improving the end-of-third-graders' reading skills

Nobody ever imagined that after being lost for more than half a century, the intangible cultural heritage known as Gaolou Mixian would be restored and passed down by a young man. “As someone of Gaolou origin, I have a responsibility to restore our ancestors' art form,” said Chen Guorui, the world's only inheritor of this ancient art.
Gaolou Mixian uses rice paste (米糊) to glue together selected grains of transparent rice to create realistic figures or structures. It is a unique folk art that developed during the Qing Dynasty and reached its peak during the first half of the 20th century. Each household in Gaolou village would make rice structures that they put on display in their ancestral halls during the Chinese New Year, which attracted people from all sides.
However, due to the wet weather in southern China, these rice-made artworks would only last three to four months before losing their shape. It is for this reason that these works are not seen in museums in China. Due to various historical reasons, most people in Gaolou village did not pass down the art form, which caused it to disappear nearly 70 years ago.
Chen found out about this after hearing one former resident express disappointment about its loss. Curious, he started to do research and tried out the methods he heard about from older people in the village. After several months of exploration, Chen finally completed his first successful work.
Over the past five years, Chen has gradually improved his skills and even begun using new techniques, such as creating some colorful artworks with colored grains of rice. Since 2017, people at home and abroad have taken an interest in this long-lost art form. To avoid being the last inheritor (传承者), Chen has been giving classes to some students at a primary school in Fuzhou with the support of local education authorities.
12.What do we know about Gaolou Mixian
A.It is mainly made of rice.
B.It is stable in wet environment.
C.It is a popular art form nationwide.
D.It was created for religious reasons.
13.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 4 refer to
A.The technique of the artworks.
B.The disappearance of the art form.
C.The disappointment of the villagers.
D.The reason why the artworks lose their shape.
14.To train more inheritors, what has Chen Guorui done
A.Giving classes to primary students.
B.Creating many colorful artworks.
C.Improving his skills.
D.Asking older villagers for suggestions.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Chen Guorui's Successful Works
B.A Popular Folk Art of a Chinese Village
C.The Restoration of Intangible Cultural Heritage
D.A Long-lost Chinese Art Form and Its Restoration

Over the next few weeks, Emma devoted her time and energy to caring for the deer. She visited it every day after school, bringing fresh fruits and vegetables. She carefully examined its wounds, applying some medicine to help it get better and prevent infection. As the days went by, the deer began to regain its strength, and Emma was overjoyed to see it stand on its legs once again.

As the weeks turned into months, Emma watched as the deer grew stronger and more confident. It would often follow her around the backyard, nudging (轻推) her playfully with its nose.Emma felt a deep sense of satisfaction knowing that she had played a part in saving this beautiful creature's life.
