Salvador Dali is one of the most influential and famous painters of all time. Not just a painter, but his personality was as unique as his paintings. His surrealistic (超现实主义) paintings are so famous that they overshadow his other artworks.
Hearing the name “Salvador Dali” alone creates an image, or perhaps I should say, a painting in the minds of people. His paintings are usually surrealistic and hard to understand, but once understood, they convey their message so fluently and beautifully.During his creative exploration, Dali went deep into various artistic styles, such as impressionism, cloisonne (分格画), and cubism (立体画), before eventually venturing into surrealism. It was in this period that he created one of his famous paintings, Sick Boy — Pointillism (点彩派).
Pointillism is the method of painting using only small dots of color to create the painting.Sick Boy is a clear mixture of expressionism and pointillism, but there's more going on here.Dali has added a little bit of surrealism as well. This is a self-portrait of him in Cadaqués, the coastal town where he used to spend his summers.
While the sickness of the child can be seen from his lying position, exhausted and weak, and looking at the viewers' eyes, the actual sickness is far more terrifying.Take a look at his hand with long, pointed fingers. His face presents a disturbing and threatening expression. It is hardly human. It almost feels like there is another creature inside the body of this kid, using the skin and face as a cover.
The parallel can be drawn from the other living thing in the painting, the caged canary (金丝雀).Similar to the canary, which is imprisoned inside this cage to stay, the boy's true self is imprisoned inside the body. There might be some dark and sick intentions inside his mind, but those must be controlled. The way the sick child lies on the chair and stares ahead makes it one of the frightening paintings by Salvador Dali.
4.What is the main feature of Salvador Dali's paintings

7.Which word can best describe Salvador Dali

Researchers working in the ancient city of Pompeii, Italy, have found two frescoes (a type of wall painting) in a large dining hall. The art has laid undisturbed beneath ash and pumice (a kind of rock that comes from volcanoes) for nearly 2,000 years.Pompeii was a Roman city in ancient Italy, until an eruption by Mount Vesuvius, a nearby volcano, in AD 79 buried it.The thick layer of ash and rock protected many of Pompeii's treasures from damage and thieves.Teams of archaeologists, experts who study ancient objects to help us understand history, are gradually uncovering its mysteries.
The team put a special kind of glue into the back of the frescoes to keep them from falling off the wall.A roof is being put up over the room too, to protect it from the weather. The paintings show figures from Greek stories, including Helen of Troy, the daughter of the god Zeus, and Cassandra, who could predict the future. The Romans admired Greek culture.
Experts say the style of the art is unusual for the time. The frescoes are painted on a black wall, and experts think the colour was chosen to hide soot, a black powder produced by the oil-burning lamps used at the time.It also makes the frescoes stand out brightly. The floor of the dining room is a mosaic (马赛克) where patterns are created with small tiles (瓷砖).Researchers think the mosaic, which is white with a black border, contains a million tiles that would have reflected the sun up onto the paintings.
Archaeologists think they know who owned the building and paintings because they found the_initials “ARV” carved into a wall.Dr Sophie Hay told the BBC, “We know who ARV is: he's Aulus Rustius Verus. He's a politician. He's super-rich.”
Though there have been many incredible finds in the Pompeii area in recent years, uncovering Pompeii is tricky, expensive and time-consuming.A third of the city is still buried, but it will stay that way for now.The hope is that technology will improve and future archaeologists will find better ways of digging up the remaining ruins.
8.What can we conclude about the two frescoes
A.They were found on the roof of a dining hall.
B.They were first buried for better protection.
C.They are now well protected by the experts.
D.They are typical art works of Italian culture.
9.How does the author introduce the style of the art
A.By giving examples.
B.By making comparisons.

D.By providing explanations.
10.What do the underlined words “the initials” mean in paragraph 4
A.The first letters.
B.The great politicians.
C.The rich persons.
D.The famous painters.
11.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.The study of the buried city was incredible.
B.Uncovering Pompeii is a really easy task.
C.The whole city will be brought to light soon.
D.Better ways are needed to uncover Pompeii.

If you've been painting for a while, you would have heard about some of the age-old “rules” that regularly go the rounds.
Regardless, we tend to love art for what it is and thank goodness — because art would have died out long ago if its success depended on whether the artists followed all the rules in making it. To be fair, a lot of rules are tried-and-true-procedures, ways of doing things that have proved their worth over time. But rules regarding composition (构图), tone and color are all there to be broken if we dare.
Black paint was almost banned by the Impressionists, who preferred to get their darks from mixtures rather than use black in any way. However, John Singer Sargent certainly used black, as did Turner (who is widely regarded as the father of Impressionism), and Renoir is quoted as saying “I've been for 40 years discovering that the queen of all colors is black.”
Even today, many artists will not consider using black paint and this has become one of the “rules”. You'll often hear that “black is a dead color” — I don't know who first used that phrase but it is so well-worn that it has become gospel (真理).
Black is still in the palettes (调色板) of many portrait artists and, interestingly, the Swedish artist Anders Zorn famously often used a palette of just black, white, vermilion and yellow ochre, and his paintings are anything but dead! It is well worth the time to look at Zorn's limited-palette work and marvel at what can be obtained from those four colors.
I tend to use black in my rainy cityscapes. My favorite colors to use with black are some amazing grays that are possible without too much complication. The rebellion is already underway and black paint is being squeezed out of tubes all over the world.
Are you coming over to the dark side
12.What is the author's attitude towards breaking rules in art
A.Positive. B.Carefree.
C.Doubtful. D.Unfavorable.
13.Why are the painters mentioned in the third paragraph
A.To highlight the value of old rules.
B.To provide useful instruction for readers.
C.To illustrate actual significance of black paint.
D.To recommend distinguished artists in Impressionism.
14.What is Anders Zorn known for
A.Having large numbers of favorite palettes.
B.Preferring traditional styles to modern ones.
C.Using simple colors for expressive paintings.
D.Classifying interesting portraits as dead works.
15.What is the text mainly about
A.The reflection on the trend of art.
B.The invitation of the use of black.
C.The guidance on painting cityscapes.
D.The consequence of following rules.

In a house far from the city lived John and his mother.John's only hobby was wandering in the nearby picturesque forest. In its center was a shiny clear lake with schools of fish dancing in it.Lovely animals such as deer or rabbits were playing around and cute birds were singing in trees.Fascinated by the beauty and liveliness of nature, he desired to become a great artist and present all the breath-taking scenes to the world.
John studied in the local primary school.Life was not easy for John and his mom after his father died.Knowing what hard work his mother did to make ends meet, John really didn't want his mother to worry. His mother knew the significance of education in life but she was against his dream of becoming an
artist.“The profession of artist can't aid a person in meeting his daily expenses,” she would say.But as each day passed, John's dream became more passionate.
Due to the living circumstances, even buying some new colors would be a luxury.John only used the worn drawing file and limited colors for his daily practice.Though lacking fine painting materials, he never gave up drawing. He spent a significant amount of time staying in the forest, secretly perfecting his craft. With continuous hard work and a distinct gift for art, he drew beautifully.
One day, John read about a competition being held in the town, whose deadline was only two days away.He got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire but he was in a dilemma (两难境地) as for the competition he needed special paints and some brushes. He didn't have the courage to ask his mother for money as he knew her prejudice against art.
That evening his mom returned from work and handed him a few paper notes, saying, “This is for your lunch at school next month.” The money was enough for his desired materials! John's face lit up.

第二节(参考范文)
Early the next morning, John secretly left home with the money.Hastily, he bought paper and pens for painting, and then dashed to the competition. After signing up for it, he was given the task.It was his time.He was deeply absorbed in his work, forgetting everything around him. After finishing his task, he went home, with birds singing for him.Every day, he looked forward to the result happily and anxiously, though he felt hungry. It seemed that the time stopped.
A week later, a phone call came to John's home.Hearing what the man said, his mother felt puzzled, not knowing how his son had done it, because she knew it needed money. As soon as John arrived home, his mother told him the news, and waited for his explanation.Knowing the truth, her eyes welled up with tears.Hugging her son tightly, she apologized to him.But he was happy, not only because he had got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire, but also he was awarded a lot of money because of his work.
