Have you ever found beauty in life, even during difficult times
Here’s a movie called Life is Beautiful. The story happens in 1939 Orefice, a young man, is a Jew (犹太人). He’s funny and clever, and falls in love with an Italian girl named Dora. Later, they marry and have a son named Joshua and run a bookstore together.
Unluckily, they and many other Jewish families, are taken to a concentration camp (集中营) by German Nazi (纳粹党). In the camp, Orefice explains to Joshua that the camp is a game and he must perform the activities. Orefice also tells his son the person who gets to 1, 000 points will win a tank (坦克). The most moving is that the people in the camp also keep the lie (谎言) to themselves. Orefice tries hard to protect Joshua’s innocence (天真). He even teaches all of the German children how to say “Thank you” in Italian. Though Orefice is killed at last, Joshua is alive when the allies (同盟军) arrives.
The film shows us how to protect those we love in the face of difficulties. As the French writer Romain Rolland once said, “There’s only one heroism (英雄主义) in the world: to see the world as it is and to love it.” And this best describes the life and actions of our hero, Orefice.
16.Where does Orefice’s wife come from
A.Germany. B.Italy. C.France. D.Russia.
17.Which facts in the movie best reflect (反映) life is beautiful
①Orefice teaches German children Italian.
②Orefice’s family are in a concentration camp.
③Orefice is dead and the allies arrives.
④Jew in the camp didn’t tell Joshua the truth.
A.①④ B.①③ C.②③ D.②④
18.What do Romain Rolland’s words mean in the last paragraph
A.You’ll work out any problems as soon as you’re used to challenging yourselves.
B.If you want to be heroes, you should travel around and help people in the world.
C.You should love life and be able to love even when you’re in certain hard times.
D.Whether you are from the east or west, you can be used to the life in the world.
B
When I was a teenager, my parents were never interested in the music I liked. They always said to me, “David, the music you listen to is noisy. Why do you like listening to it so much ” At the same time, they described the music that they liked as “beautiful”.
In fact, they are not the only ones who have this opinion. As I’ve grown older, I’ve often heard my friends say, “Today’s music is terrible.” Many older people just don’t like new music. But why is that
The exposure effect (曝光效应) may explain this. It means the more familiar (熟悉的) we are with something, the more probably we will like it. When we are in our early teens, we usually spend a lot of time listening to popular music and discussing it with our friends. We come to understand the new songs and artists during this time really well. After we become 30 years old, we are busy working and raising our families. We don’t have much time to look for new music. Instead, we like to listen to our old favorite songs that bring us back to our happy and simple days. According to studies, when we are 33 years old, most of us will completely stop exploring new music.
But I think there is another reason why older people dislike new music. Most popular music, after all, is not written for them. It is made for young people. Some kinds of music began by young people as ways to fight against out-of-date things. These kinds include punk, rap, hip-hop, heavy metal and more. Younger people love them naturally.
Do your parents hate the music you like, too Now, after reading this article, you know there is nothing wrong with that.
19.According to the passage, many older people dislike new music because ________.
A.it makes them upset and they don’t want to waste their time
B.it sounds terrible and the songs bring them back to sad days
C.they don’t understand the difficult words and hate the artists
D.they don’t know it well and it’s mostly written for the young
20.The underlined word “exploring” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
A.looking for B.trying out C.giving up D.setting up
21.What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph
A.New music will become more popular with older people.
B.Older people will try to listen to different kinds of new music.
C.People will know it’s normal that older people dislike new music.
D.More beautiful and simple songs will be written for older people.
22.This passage mainly talks about ________.
A.different kinds of music in the world B.people’s different opinions on new music
C.the great importance of the exposure effect D.the reasons why older people dislike new music
C

Computers have become smarter in recent months. The AI-powered chatbot (聊天机器人) ChatGPT is able to answer questions, write articles and e-mails like a human. It has created excitement all over the world.
Like most robots, ChatGPT wasn’t made by just one person. Instead, it was developed by a group of engineers at OpenAI. Among them, one man played an especially important role. That man is Jakub Pachocki.
Jakub Pachocki is a programmer. He has been interested in AI for many years. He wants to use this technology to make computers smarter. In 2017, the man joined OpenAI. There he taught a robot to play Dota2, an online game. Pachocki made the robot play against itself over and over until it reached the top level.
Pachocki began working on ChatGPT in 2018. His job was to pre-train the AI system (系统). The man and his team made computers study hundreds of millions of words. These words came from books, magazine articles, Internet and so on. They covered many different subjects. By studying these words, the system learned the patterns (规律) of human language. This helped the chatbot develop the ability to “chat” about different subjects like a real person.
Although Patrocki is very talented, he has kept a low profile. He hardly ever talks to the media (媒体). He is not active on social media, either. The programmer, instead, spends most of his time on his work, trying to make computers smarter.

【原文】 My name is Sandy. I live with my parents, my sister Judy and my baby brother Jimmy. All the housework was done by my mother. But after Jimmy was born, she has to take care of him now. So everyone has to do chores in my family. My father washes the car twice a month and sometimes cooks on weekends. Judy folds the table and I do the dishes after meals. We have two dogs. Judy walks them every day and takes out the rubbish when she goes out.
I have to say that I really hated doing chores before. I thought it was unfair to ask kids to help with the housework. But then my teacher told us that our parents are very busy, and helping with the housework can take some of the stress off them. Also, doing chores encourages us to be independent. Now, I change my mind and enjoy doing chores for my family and for myself.
