A
As a young girl, Alice Lay would find ways to incorporate (纳入) an element of art and design into her class assignments. “I was always the one who would do more than the teacher asked,” she said. She once purchased an expensive wood burner just to create designs on an art piece she wanted to incorporate into her history class project.
Lay returned to her artistic roots as an undergraduate at the University of California, Berkeley to make personalized thank-you cards for her professors. She enjoyed making the cards so much that now, as a graduate student in Jennifer Dionne's lab, she continues the practice for members of her research group — but she's taken it up a notch (等级).
“Now, as I work on them, I get more and more crazy ideas like, I can make this flip up or this light up,” she said.Recently she incorporated tiny electronic LED bulbs that light up on the card when you press three small buttons. For another card, she wrote hidden messages in invisible ink.
While creating cards is her main artistic medium, she enjoys finding ways to make her scientific data more visually appealing. “I find that to be really nice because I can use my artistic skills for my papers and my presentations,” she said.
But making cards is more than a pastime for her, she said. When experiments are failing and troubleshooting isn't working, she feels stuck and frustrated. “But my cards are feasible (可行的),” she said. “The mechanics aren't very complicated so I feel like whatever I can think of is doable.”
Lay said that the more she talks about her dual (双重的) interests in art and science, the more she meets others who have similarly varied pursuits. Even for those who feel only drawn to science, she encourages further exploration of art, believing that it touches everyone's life and there is something for everyone to appreciate in it.

The city of Florence eats, sleeps and breathes art. Examples of man's artistic genius (天赋) stand on nearly every street. Dozens of museums and art shops wait to be explored.
During the Renaissance, Florence was a paradise for artists themselves. Before this time, art focused completely on religious subjects. Renaissance art began to include more variety. Artists painted pictures of ordinary people. They painted scenes from history and characters from Greek and Roman myths (神话).
Michelangelo was the greatest of Florence's artists. Visitors line up for hours at the Accademia Museum for a look at his impressive David. This 14-foot-high statue has become the ideal human figure of the Renaissance. David is an example of Michelangelo's talent for sculpting people simply, yet powerfully.
More of Michelangelo's works can be seen in the great Palazzo Vecchio. Paintings and carvings of famous Italian artists fill the palace rooms.
A short walk through the narrow streets of Florence brings visitors to the famous Uffizi Gallery. It has an outstanding art collection. Visitors should be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as exploring the gallery takes many hours. Some of the most famous works in the collection include Botticelli's Primavera and The Birth of Venus.
Even visitors tired of art won't want to miss the Pitti Palace. Once home to Florence's powerful Medici family, the large palace now houses three museums. Filled with priceless art, the countless rooms glitter (闪光) with gold decorations. For a breath of fresh air, wander among the statues and fountains of the palace gardens.
To get a feel of modern Florence, join the evening walk. This traditional feature of Italian life begins around 6:00 pm. People walk down the streets of central Florence to do last-minute shopping or just chat with friends. Be sure to walk past Perch Noi, home of the oldest and best ice cream in the city.
Florence has given the world many great art treasures. Some stand in gardens and squares. Others line the walls of beautiful palaces. Still others are the palaces themselves. For art lovers, Florence is indeed paradise.

The summer when I was ten, my mother decided to bring us to the world of art. My brother and I were not very excited when we realized what my mother meant. What she meant was not that we could take drawing classes or painting classes but that we would have to spend one afternoon a week with her at the Fine Arts Museum.
That was not so bad — what really troubled me was that before each visit to the museum, she made us read about artists and painting styles. 9 Anyway, who wants to spend the summer thinking about artists when you could be with your friends at the swimming pool
First we had to read about ancient Egyptians and their strange way of painting faces and then go to look at them at the museum. 10 Later we had to learn about artists in the Middle Ages who painted people wearing strange long clothing. We had to look at pictures of fat babies with wings and curly hair and with no clothes on flying around the edges of paintings. 11 On our last visit to the museum, something happened when I saw a painting by a woman called Mary.
12 The colors were soft and gentle, and you could tell by the mother's expression how happy she was just to be with the child. I could hardly take my eyes away from that painting! 13 It was really worth looking at so many paintings to find a painter who could interest me so much.
A.In it, a woman was reading to a child.
B.That felt almost as bad as being in school.
C.The two paintings were so similar to each other!
D.I wanted to see every painting Mary had ever made!
E.I was immediately attracted by the strange way of painting faces.
F.Staring at those pictures, I still couldn't see what was so great about art.
G.Unusual styles of art always attracted my brother, but I was not interested.
10.选G 由“First ...then ...Later ...” 下文中的“On our last visit ...something happened ...”

__9__ Anyway, who wants to spend the summer thinking about artists when you could be with your friends at the swimming pool
First we had to read about ancient Egyptians and their strange way of painting faces and then go to look at them at the museum. __10__ Later we had to learn about artists in the Middle Ages who painted people wearing strange long clothing. We had to look at pictures of fat babies with wings and curly hair and with no clothes on flying around the edges of paintings. __11__ On our last visit to the museum, something happened when I saw a painting by a woman called Mary. __12__ The colors were soft and gentle, and you could tell by the mother's expression how happy she was just to be with the child. I could hardly take my eyes away from that painting! __13__ It was really worth looking at so many paintings to find a painter who could interest me so much.
