Over the last century, engineers all over the world have spared no effort to achieve the unachievable in bridge design.
Danyang Kunshan Grand Bridge
No bridge is as long as the Danyang Kunshan Grand Bridge in the world. The 164.8 kilometre long bridge built in 2011 in China serves as part of the Beijing Shanghai High Speed Railway. The trip from Ningbo to Jiaxing that previously took 4.5 hours has been reduced to two, thanks to this bridge.
Rio Niterói Bridge
Completed in 1974, the Rio Niterói Bridge in Brazil is the second longest bridge in all of Latin America connecting the cities of Rio and Niterói across the Guanabara Bay. The Rio Niterói Bridge is technically known as a “box girder (箱形梁)” bridge, made of special concrete. It receives an astonishing 140,000 (or more) vehicles per day.
Hartland Covered Bridge
The Hartland Covered Bridge is the world's longest covered bridge. The 1,282 foot long bridge was opened in 1901 and has been on Canada's list of National Historic Sites since 1980. Although it was originally built without a roof, the bridge was capped with wooden materials during the repairs in 1921.
Jiaozhou Bay Bridge
The newly built Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in China was named “world's longest bridge over water” by Guinness Book of World Records in 2011, a title previously held by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. The dispute was settled when the title of “longest continuous bridge over water” was given to the causeway, with the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge receiving the title of “longest bridge over water”.

In the tiny village of Angelica, New York, the post office is more than a place to get mail or send packages. There you'll find the heart of this lovely community. It's where villagers meet and greet friends.
When Angelica's post office was threatened with being closed in the 1980s, a villager, Pat, came up with a plan to save it. “At holiday time I would hear on the news about towns named Snow or Bethlehem having celebrations,” says Pat,“Why couldn't we do the same thing with Angelica?”
Pat, who is an artist, created a postal cancellation (邮戳) design featuring an Angelica angel. She drew her angels in a traditional fashion and submitted her suggestion to the US Postal Service. Once approved, the drawing was carved into a cancellation stamp that could be used for one day only. The postmistress (女邮局局长) then had another idea to make the day even more special calling the post office Angel Station.
The large increase in mail amount saved Angelica's post office from being closed and keeps the doors open today.
Now it's a tradition that on the first Friday in December, people come to Angelica to mail their cards. Each year the amount of mail going through the Angelica Post Office increases during late November and early December. Stamp collectors from around the world have accepted the Angel Station cancellation, some sending mail from as far away as France.
Because the stamp is destroyed each season, Pat draws a new angel that conveys season's greetings from Angel Station every year. Post offices may close in other parts of the country, but this tiny one continues.
4.What did Pat do to save the post office
A.She invented a new cancellation.
B.She hosted celebrations.

5.Which of the following can best describe Pat

B.It is also the centre of local social life.
C.Its name has been changed many times.
D.Its stamp remains the same each season.
7.What can the underlined word “submitted” be most likely replaced by
A.Presented. B.Applied.
C.Accepted. D.Released.

When people think of farming today, they usually picture a tractor (拖拉机) rather than horses in the farmland. That's because tractors that relied on engines revolutionized farming in the late 1800s. Now a new type of tractor can do the same in the 21st century.
Agriculture has been changing dramatically in the last few decades. The push for innovation is fed by the need to produce larger amounts of food for a growing world population. Automatic tractors may be the key to solving this challenge. They can be used to carry out labor intensive (劳动密集型的) farming while allowing farmers to do other work.A big plus is that they can increase crop output while reducing costs because the automatic machines can work in all weather conditions without any rest.
Part of the push for automation is a shortage of farm workers due to people's desire to have higher paying jobs with better working conditions. Farm owners are competing against companies and restaurants that are raising wages to attract workers. “With labor shortages and the increase in the hourly wages that have to be paid in order to be competitive, all of a sudden automation seems like a more reasonable decision,” said David Swartz, a professor at Penn State Extension.
Many believe that the time is ripe for an automatic revolution because robotics is already in use in agriculture. An Israeli agricultural technology company, whose mission is to make a fully automatic farm, is working to bring automatic tractors into mainstream farming. The company released an automatic tractor kit in February 2021 that can be fixed on any existing tractor. The kit includes camera detection, speed controls, as well as an anti crash system. The kit is being used by the growers of the West Coast in the US. It may soon come to a farm near you.
8.What contributes to the agricultural revolution according to paragraph 2
A.The urge to feed more people.
B.The extreme weather conditions.
C.The need to reduce farming costs.
D.The desire for automatic farming.
9.What is Swartz's attitude to automation
A.Critical. B.Negative.
C.Supportive. D.Tolerant.
10.What can be inferred about the Israeli company's kit
A.It has been widely used.
B.It can be made in many firms.
C.It can improve safety of tractors.
D.It will detect the way of farming.
11.What may be a suitable title for the text
A.Automation is transforming agriculture
B.Big companies are making a difference
C.Driverless tractors are worth investing
D.Traditional farming is falling out of date
D
If you could see a movie of your life before you lived it, would you want to live it Probably not. The excitement of living is that you don't know what's coming.
Sure, it's hard to see the uncertainty (不确定性) in such a positive light when you're out of work, or when you feel like you're failing. But the uncertainty is really another word for the opportunity.
When Allison graduated from Harvard, she had opportunities all over the place but had no idea what she wanted to do. She took a job in consulting but she knew she wouldn't stay there. She took the GRE and scored so high that she was able to increase her income by teaching students. Still, she didn't think she wanted to go to graduate school. Allison knew she wasn't doing what she wanted, but she didn't know what she wanted.
She worried. All her friends were going to graduate school or started their own business. She was lost and felt that she would never find anything out.
After six years, many of her friends who went directly to professional (职业的) school had crises when they graduated because they weren't sure if they had picked the right profession. And Allison, by having a general plan in mind, got married, moved to the Midwest, and used her consulting experience to get a great job.
Allison realized that her years spent being lost were actually just a period during which she was finding her way: time well spent, and time we must all take if we're being honest with ourselves.
The only way to lead an interesting life is to face uncertainties and make choices. Otherwise your life is not your own — it is a path someone else has chosen. Moments of uncertainty are when you create your life, when you become who you are.
Uncertainties usually begin with a job hunt, but they don't end there. Every new role we take on means another round of uncertainty. Instead of fearing them, we are supposed to find some new ways to deal with uncertainties.
12.What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs
A.Being out of work is a sad thing.
B.The uncertainty is what makes life interesting.
C.Life in a film is more exciting than life in reality.
D.Opportunity never appears when we need it.
13.How did Allison feel about her six years' experience
A.Doubtful. B.Sad.
C.Regretful. D.Satisfied.
14.What is most likely to be discussed in the following paragraph
A.Ways to deal with uncertainties.
B.The role the uncertainty plays in life.
C.The reason why people fear uncertainties.
D.The one is to blame for uncertainties.
15.In which way does the author develop the passage
A.Giving definitions.
B.Giving examples.
C.Deciding the changes in space order.
D.Making comparisons.

My knees started shaking, yet my body froze. It felt as though my soul departed my body and I had no control over it. Anxiously, I looked through the roster (名单) posted on the wall of the locker room. My heart was beating harder and harder as I slowly saw all my friends' names on that list but could not find mine. At that moment, I froze. I just could not accept that all my friends were on the basketball team while I was not.
I was so convinced there was a mistake that I went and found the coach. “Hey, coach, are you sure that the roster you posted is correct?” I asked anxiously, dreading (担心) his answer.
“Yes, the names on the list are finalized. Sorry if you did not make it this year, there is always next year,” the coach replied.
I could feel the hot, bitter tears filling my eyes, and I ran out of the room as fast as I could. Trying to forget about the situation, I headed over to the cafeteria to buy some food. I felt dead inside, like nothing mattered. Walking was such a burden that it felt as if I had a 100 pound weight tied to my backpack. My mind was also blank for the rest of the school day. Everything my teachers said went in one ear and out the other.
After school, as I walked to the parking lot to get picked up, I saw all my friends gathered near the back of the lot, celebrating and joking around. I detoured (绕道) around the side of the school to avoid them, trying not to think about being the only one in our friend group failing to make the team.
I saw my father's red car pull up near the school lot. I walked up to the car and got in. He smiled at me, turned on the radio, and started driving home. And soon he noticed my gloomy face, and asked me what was wrong. “Nothing. Well, it's just that all my friends made the school team. Everyone! Except me ...” I stammered (口吃). “Well, what are you going to do about it Are you just going to sit there and wait?” he asked. Surprised, I didn't know what to say.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式作答。
I just shook my head and went into my room.

After almost a year of practicing and training, I tried out for the team again.

第一节 参考范文:
Dear Christine,
I am more than delighted to know that you are interested in how we are studying now.
With the development of technology, our learning style is changing greatly. In addition to the traditional classes, we can experience the convenience that the Internet brings to us. For example, with the help of the Internet, we can get more education resources. There are online tests available as well. Moreover, when we have questions, we can seek answers from experts online.
To sum up, the new technology is reshaping our learning style and makes us study more efficiently.
Thank you for your concern.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 参考范文:
I just shook my head and went into my room. I thought hard and realized that nobody was going to give me a place on that team. I would have to earn it. Having decided to work toward my goal of making the team, I biked to the gym near my school every day after school and trained for two hours. There were moments when I didn't think I could keep on going, but I powered through it.
After almost a year of practicing and training, I tried out for the team again. “Believe in yourself,” I said to myself. “Hard work pays off.” After the tryout, I felt confident and congratulated myself. Regardless of the outcome, I knew that I had worked hard and learned something about mental toughness. The next day, I found out I made the team. Seeing my name printed in large bold letters, I felt as though all my dreams came true. The greater the effort, the sweeter the reward, and by making the team, I had officially made a turnaround.
