A Missourian woman is following in her father's footsteps—training to be a heart surgeon—and recently, she and her father got the chance to perform surgery together.
Dr. Sophia Roberts, 30, is a general surgery resident physician at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Her dad, Dr. Harold Roberts Jr., 66, has been practicing medicine for the last 32 years. In May, Roberts teamed up with his daughter for an aortic valve(主动脉瓣) replacement.
“I told Sophia that I had this case coming and she went out and read about it. And she'd never seen it, much less assisted with it,” Harold Roberts recalled.
Even though the case was new to her, Sophia Roberts jumped at the chance. She had wanted to spend a month learning and operating with her surgeon father back in 2020, but their plans fell through for all kinds of reasons. So this was the shot she'd been waiting for.
When the day came, Harold Roberts was pleased to have his eldest child by his side and said it was a “really nice thing” to work together with her. The elder Roberts said his daughter helped open the patient's chest and she did a great job. “It was really very smooth. I wouldn't have done the case any better if I had another heart surgeon assist me,” he said.
Sophia Roberts, who served as her dad's first assistant, said it was a memorable experience but also said that once the surgery got underway, she was in the zone.
“It's very special that I was operating with him, but quite frankly, I could have been operating with anyone—like all of a sudden, you're just focusing on that patient and making the operation go smoothly,” she said.
Harold and Sophia Roberts reported,“The patient has done great since the surgery and is even excited that the father-daughter team will be taking care of her.”

How to be more resilient(适应力强的)
We've all heard of IQ, and terms like EQ, which relates to our emotional intelligence, are commonly used. But have you heard of AQ 1 It measures our ability to resist the shock when life gives us an unexpected difficulty, and how likely we are to fail or succeed in these situations. 2
Adverse situations can take us by surprise. In the workplace, it could be in the form of a layoff, the company we work for going under or being restructured, or even missing out on a promotion. Failed friendships and relationships, hard financial times and even loss of beloved ones are things that can occur outside of work. 3
So how can we learn to be more resilient
Luckily, there are some steps you can take to help you be more resilient and adaptable in the face of adversity, according to Dr Shahram Heshmat, a professor of health economics.
4 Resilient people often have an aim and are able to concentrate more on a desired outcome, seeing negative situations as a bump in the road on the way to achieving their goal. Learning to relax and regulate your emotions is another key step—one way to help is to practise breathing exercises. Likewise, focusing too much on things and letting them get to you can cause you to be stressed. So see difficulties more as an opportunity to learn and grow emotionally. 5 Being able to talk with someone about the challenges we face can help.
A.First, try and find a meaningful goal.
B.Things that happen in life are not always pleasant.
C.Finally, make sure you have a good social support network.
D.However, taking a few steps to be more resilient can make them a little easier to get through.
E.AQ stands for the adversity quotient and measures our ability to deal with the ups and downs in life.
F.Being able to handle these rough times is important not only in our personal lives but in our professional lives.
G.It can also be used to predict our attitudes, perseverance, longevity, and the ways we learn from changes in the environment.

原句 Sophia Roberts, who served as her dad's first assistant, said it was a memorable experience but also said that once the surgery got underway, she was in the zone.

We've all heard of IQ, and terms like EQ, which relates to our emotional intelligence, are commonly used.
1.A 由第一句可知作者的肺部受到了感染,However表转折,结合下文“My work was more dangerous than my lung infection.” 故选A。
3.D 根据上一句中的“began my walk to work”可知此处表示到达工作场所。
6.B 根据本段最后两句“So I submitted my resume(简历). A few days later, I 7 an interview and ended up getting employed.”
7.D 根据“So I submitted my resume(简历).”
8.B 根据“However, I loved it.”
故选A。
10.C 根据下文“...I was never tired when I clocked out at the end of the day. It took a while for me to fit in.”
11.D 根据时间状语“For the first few weeks of work”和下文的“I was always looking over my shoulder”可知,作者刚到新环境,感到紧张。
12.A 根据下文“for fear that they would turn against me later”可知作者害怕同事以后敌对他,所以刚开始作者不愿意和新同事交朋友。故选A。
14.C 由下文“When problems arose, we talked them through instead of slinging mud(血口喷人).” make fun of取笑;find fault with挑剔;look out for关照;put up with忍受。
different不同的;complex复杂的;last最后的;right正确的。
3.tend v.
I was in an environment where my colleagues were respectable so I was never tired when I clocked out at the end of the day.
