Ⅲ.阅读理解
A
Jack Prelutsky is an American poet. He is known for his humorous and fascinating poetry for children, which has earned him numerous awards.
Jack Prelutsky was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1940. As a child, he did not enjoy poetry, finding it boring and pointless. Instead, Prelutsky showed his artistry through music, taking voice and piano lessons. While Prelutsky claims he got into poetry almost by accident, he also states that he was always a poet. It just took him some time to realize his love for poetry.
Prelutsky explored quite a few options before he found his niche in poetry. He was a folk singer and guitar teacher in Greenwich Village in his late teens and early twenties. Prelutsky also held a variety of odd jobs. He worked as a furniture mover, piano mover, taxicab driver, coal shoveler, fruit picker, truck driver, photographer and so on.
At the age of 23, Prelutsky decided to try illustrating books. Just before presenting his illustrations to a children's book editor, he added a few lines of poetry to the pictures. The editor told him that the illustrations were not publishable but the poems showed the talent. Over the next months and years, Prelutsky worked with the editor to create a collection of animal poems inspired by his love of the Bronx Zoo. His first book, entitled A Gopher in the Garden and Other Animal Poems, was published in 1967.
In addition to writing, Prelutsky has edited various poetry collections and translated poetry from German and Swedish into English. He currently resides in Seattle, where he writes and performs his work. Prelutsky is considered one of the most popular children's poets. His work pioneered a new era of children's poetry. In 2006, the Poetry Foundation named Jack Prelutsky the first Children's Poet Laureate, a position designed to promote poetry for children and raise awareness of the power and relevance of poetry for young people.

There was a time when the major concern about AI safety had been the evil superintelligence, reflected in the movie The Terminator. However, the game “Tacoma” takes a different approach. It assumes that there will be lots of AGI(artificial general intelligence) in the world and that any AGI, even safely designed, in the wrong hands and at the wrong time could cause lives to be lost. That's the future that a growing number of AI security specialists are worried about.
This is not a new idea. In the book Engineering a Safer World:Systems Thinking Applied to Safety, MIT Professor Nancy G. Leveson addresses common misunderstandings about Safety Critical Systems Engineering: engineering systems whose failure could lead to human loss. Such technologies include aviation, nuclear power, automobiles, bio-technology, and, of course, AGI.
So what can be done
Technology isn't always the solution. A famous example is the invention of sonic radar(声波雷达) that was supposed to help ships detect nearby obstacles, which only increased the rate of accidents. Why Captains sailed faster, thinking they could get away with them thanks to the new safety technology.
Instead of technologies, Leveson's book suggests we should be making organizational changes. Additionally, Leveson suggests, among many complicated guidelines, organizations should be aware that safety guidelines will inevitably become lax over time. As a consequence, measures should be carried out to prevent potential disasters.
What lessons can we draw from concern about AI safety The answer may lie in recent disaster narratives(叙述), which remind us that, especially in times like this, we shouldn't forget the potential for other disasters. Public conscience does matter. And if we're all better at thinking about safety we criticise, maybe we can really prevent disasters.
5.Why does the author mention The Terminator
A.To arouse readers' interest in The Terminator.
B.To introduce the topic of concern about AI safety.
C.To mention the similarity between The Terminator and “Tacoma”.
D.To make readers recall the evil superintelligence reflected in the movie.
6.Why did the rate of ship accidents increase after the invention of sonic radar
A.Because captains seldom used it.
B.Because the radar failed to work properly.
C.Because captains depended on it too much.
D.Because the ships couldn't detect nearby obstacles.
7.What does the underlined word “lax” refer to
A.Safe. B.Important. C.Unreliable. D.Unnecessary.
8.Which can be the best title for the text
A.Disaster prevention lessons from AI B.Safety problems in modern society
C.Engineering development in modern days D.Future applications of artificial intelligence
