Ⅰ.阅读理解
I was driving when I received a new email. Filled with expectation, I pulled over and eagerly opened it. My emotions quickly changed as I learned, for the sixth and final time, that I had been refused a promotion to full professor. I was sad that the place I worked in didn't seem to value what I brought to the table.
When I told my family that news at night, my children offered a surprising response. They were excited to see what I was going to do next, they said. They clearly knew long before I did that losing my application for a promotion would turn out to be the best thing that could have happened to me.
To my surprise, having a final answer brought a welcome sense of closure. Once it was all over, I realized how tiring the process had been. For 15 months, I had spent hours every day trying to prove my worth to my university. I was underweight. My self-worth was at an all-time low. I just wanted to regain my fitness and happiness.
I wrote a letter of resignation(辞职)—but instead of sending it, I saved it on my desktop, ready to attach it to an email at any moment. Because I love working in academic circles too much to quietly quit, I decided to carry on in my existing position for a while but put my own values first. I began to say no to work that wasn't personally rewarding so I would have more time to spend with my children, exercise, eat well, and sleep more. I disconnected from people in my life who are against my values, and developed relationships with those who bring out the best in me.
As my mental health improved, I rethought about my institution and concluded it was no longer serving me well. A month after that email, I found myself in the car again, experiencing another career-defining moment. This time the email brought a job offer with a promotion to full professor and a higher salary from a famous university.

Ⅱ.读后续写
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was a baby, my parents gave me anything I wanted. I would play with a toy for a while, get bored, and ask my parents for a new one. Then my dad died when I was 2, and I got even more stuff as my mom, friends, and other family members gave me more and more stuff to try to make me feel better. My mom continued to treat me to whatever I wanted until I was seven and then my world collapsed.
That was when the real estate market crashed. My mom had thought buying houses was a good way to invest her money to take care of us. After the crash, I went from the kid who got a fine iPod and who had the coolest house, to almost having nowhere to stay.
Since then, when I would like to ask for a new toy or bike, or even to see a movie, my mom would say, “I'm sorry, honey, but we really can't afford that right now.” My mom had grown up in a family where money was never a problem, so this change was as big for her as it was for me. My constant requests for toys and video games deepened her concern about our financial situation. But I wasn't used to hearing “no”. So, for a year or two, I kept asking for things whether I really needed them or not.
Then something happened, which would change my way of thinking forever. My mom had been working really hard all year, just to pay for the necessities, like our rents, and water and power bills. When she asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I said that I wanted a new video gaming system. I didn't know that it was expensive. All I knew was that my friends had it and that I wanted one, too.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
On my birthday, I started opening presents, believing that I would get what I asked for.

From then on I wouldn't ask for anything that I didn't need any more.

分析 本句是并列复合句。so连接两个并列分句;前一分句是主从复合句,其中that引导定语从句,修饰先行词work。

One possible version:
On my birthday, I started opening presents, believing that I would get what I asked for. As I anxiously opened the last gift box, however, I found nothing other than a pair of jeans. All at once I frowned and then burst into tears. My mom could tell how disappointed I was and she started crying. I suddenly came to realize how hard she was working to support me and cover our expenses and that she couldn't afford to give me anything I didn't need. I hugged her more tightly than ever before.
From then on I wouldn't ask for anything that I didn't need any more. From the unforgettable birthday present I learned the difference between what I wanted and what I needed. In addition, I learned to appreciate the toys or games I did have and took good care of them. When I wanted a new iPod, I had to work to buy it. The feeling of having truly earned something was one of the best feelings in the world. Meanwhile, I was also grateful to my mother, who had given me all she could.
