At Beijing's Palace Museum, it sometimes seems that time stands still, but the clocks keep ticking at a small workshop. This is where clock conservator Qi Haonan works. As the fourth generation to repair and restore antique clocks at the museum since 1949, Qi has made more than 100 timepieces return to their former glory.
“What amazes me most about these clocks is that they combine the scientific advances, technological precision and the trend in decorative art of their particular era. I want to enable more people to marvel(惊叹) at the mechanics,”Qi says, adding that through short-video platforms, where his accounts have attracted more than 3 million followers, he can share with a wider audience just how magnificent the clocks are when they are fully functional.
“These clocks are rare treasures, not only serving as a plaything for emperors, but also witnessing the development of the mechanical weaving machine,”Qi says. He notes that the job requires extreme patience, because clock restoration is a dull and meticulous process, adding that it is positive proof of the proverb “haste makes waste” and, in this case, haste can do a great deal of damage.
Although the antique clock repairing techniques at the Palace Museum were listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2014, it was a little-known skill and in short supply of career candidates before 2016, when the three-part TV documentary, Masters in the Forbidden City, brought the profession into the national consciousness. Before the release of the documentary, for a decade it had just been him and his mentor Wang Jin doing the job. They tried to recruit graduates from college, but nobody applied. Qi didn't expect that the documentary would make the profession a big hit. As a result, in 2017, Qi got two apprentices(学徒) and Wang got three.
“With the rising attention and influence, antique clock restoration can not only be further developed, but also be expanded to more museums that house antique clocks and watches,”Qi says.

In valleys with thick plants, different-sized round and square buildings with faded yellow clay walls and wooden roofs, tulou lie in mountainous villages in Longyan, Fujian Province. There are more than 23,000 tulou in Yongding District, which became well-known after 46 were given World Heritage status by UNESCO in 2008. “The structures were awarded because they are exceptional examples of a building of tradition and function demonstrating a particular type of communal living and defensive organization, and, in terms of their harmonious relationship with their environment, an outstanding example of human settlement,” UNESCO said.
The giant multi-storied tulou were built with wood and mud walls. Constructed from the 13th to 20th centuries, these massive communal homes were sited based on feng shui principles, which claim to use energy forces to harmonize individuals with their environment. Tulou are also purposefully resting amid tea, tobacco, rice plantations and abundant forests of pine and bamboo.
Throughout history, tulou residents have mostly been Hakka—migrants in southern China. Population pressures created conflict between the Hakka and their neighbors, so they built their homes to double as defences. The buildings are mainly four or five stories high. The first floor serves as the kitchen, the second is used for grain storage and the upper floors act as living areas. The structures are mainly symmetrical, and their defensive features include ironclad gates, escape tunnels, narrow openings for weapons under the dark tiled roofs, and a water well. For their defensive function, only rooms on the third floor and higher have windows, which are very small. With sufficient food, the residents could survive in the event of a lengthy conflict.
Communal living is integrity to these villages, where the closed wall design boosts social interaction. Residents gather in the courtyard for ceremonies such as ancestor worship and weddings. Tulou are such an extraordinary piece of architecture, living up to the title given by UNESCO.

Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historical area of a city In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historical feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic reasons—why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own hometown where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate(影响) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historical areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative and do not like changes.
Although we have to respect people's feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.
32.What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph
A.Some of them are not attractive.
B.Most of them are too expensive to preserve.
C.They are more pleasing than modern buildings.
D.They have nothing to do with the historical feel of an area.
33.Which of the following is true according to the author
A.We should reproduce the same old buildings.
B.Buildings should not dominate their surroundings.
C.Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.
D.No one understands why people speak against new buildings.
34.According to the last paragraph, what does the author probably want the architect and planner to do
A.To destroy old buildings.
B.To choose new architectural styles.
C.To put things in a different place.
D.To respect people's feelings for historical buildings.
35.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To explain why people dislike changes.
B.To warn that we could end up living in caves.
C.To admit that new buildings have ruined their surroundings.
D.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historical areas.

On a freezing morning of December, two police officers were patrolling the streets. Suddenly, the walkie-talkie(无线电对讲机) on Alan, one of the officers, rang. “The cake shop near the City Museum has reported a burglary(入室盗窃案). Please rush to the scene immediately,” said the electronic voice.
The two policemen quickly arrived at the shop, only to find that the scene showed no sign of crimes at all. Curiously, they checked the monitor and found that a thin woman broke the window and climbed into the store at 5:20 a.m. Instead of searching around, she walked straight into the storage room, stole cheese, chocolate, butter and other ingredients for a cake, and then ran away down the road.
Both policemen felt quite confused about her behavior. One of the shop assistants identified the thief as Clara, a single mother who lived nearby. She had an eight-year-old boy to take care of and lived in poverty.
Moments later, the two officers arrived at Clara's house. Bob, another officer, pulled out a gun and was about to break in. But Alan told him to put the gun away and knocked gently.
The door opened and out came a very thin woman. From the outline of her figure, Alan recognized that she was exactly the thief. The woman, Clara, immediately understood the situation when she saw the two policemen. She buried her face in her hands and sat down on the floor.
At that very moment, a child's voice broke the silence, “Mom, is anyone coming to my birthday party Invite them in, please.”
After hearing the boy's words, Clara stood up and begged in a low voice, “Officer, I did steal those things, but there's nothing else I could do. It's my baby's birthday, and I've got neither a job nor money. Please don't take those things away. I've just used them to make him a cake.”

第二节
One possible version:
Looking into the woman's teary eyes, Alan understood and walked into the house. There were no more possessions except for some time-worn furniture, even no fireplace in such weather. At the sight of Alan, the boy, whose face was bright red with cold, could barely contain himself. “Would you like some cake, sir ” he smiled eagerly. “I would like to. But I'm on duty. I just come over to say Happy Birthday to you, kid!” Coming out of the house, Alan gestured for Clara to come in and walked away, making Bob at a loss. “But we haven't finished yet!” Alan turned around and firmly said, “We can't get her, at least not today.”
Bob nodded thoughtfully and asked, “What about the things she stole ” “The bill is on me,” Alan volunteered. After returning to the cake shop, he explained the incident to the shop owner and then paid for the stolen materials. Afterwards, Clara went to the police station, asking for her punishment. What the officers had done made her feel ashamed of her theft. She said that she would improve her life through her own efforts and would no longer do anything illegal again. Everything settled, Alan and Bob continued the patrol and it seemed not that cold ever after.
