第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Martín Ramírez from Argentina
I think it is okay for scientists to grow genetically-engineered food because they can develop better food and this can help with the hunger problem all around the world. Scientists can help us to have more and better meat to eat by cloning only the superior animals. I don't think that we should worry so much about genetically-engineered food.
Angela Fernández from Mexico
I don't know whether the tomatoes we find in supermarkets are genetically manipulated or not. What I do know is that they are very bad! A tomato grown with the sun and soil is much better. In the case of strawberries, actually, most strawberries we can find are very tasty. I guess, however, they have been genetically controlled, too.
Vera Sorokina from Russia
If we control vegetable genes, we can also do with human genes. So, it may be possible that a substance which is left in food could get into the human body while the person is eating. Then, is it possible that this substance could modify the genetic structure of humans
Pinar Müfftler from Türkiye
I don't agree with the idea that scientists should not grow genetically-engineered food because it is not safe. If they want to make progress, they should do experiments. It's important to keep trying. If they don't keep trying, they will never be able to develop new technologies. Maybe these technologies won't be successful in the beginning, but if scientists keep trying, they will develop new ways.
21.What can we infer about Martín Ramírez
A.He doubts whether such food is safe.
B.He worries that the crops will spoil.
C.He is in favour of cloning animals.
D.He doesn't like vegetables or fruits.
22.Which of the following does Pinar Müfftler agree with
A.Developing such food is a better way to solve the hunger problem.
B.Experimenting on such food shouldn't be allowed.
C.New technologies will make such food safer to eat.
D.This kind of food is much better and tastier.
23.Of the people above, who is obviously against genetically-engineered food
A.Pinar Müfftler from Türkiye.
B.Martín Ramírez from Argentina.
C.Vera Sorokina from Russia.
D.Angela Fernández from Mexico.

It was the dead of winter when Dad told me that he found a delicate small bag in the snow on his way out of a clinic. “It was filled with seeds, so I planted them in pots beside the living room window where they could get such great light.” Dad was excited to have a planting project in the winter. He missed tending his garden plot, which was the size of a small farm.
I now lived out of state, but Dad reported in his daily phone calls, “These plants seem to double in size overnight. It's only been a few weeks, and they are almost touching the ceiling.” Since Dad had green fingers, I wasn't surprised at that. I couldn't imagine what plant would do so well. I knew photos would not come soon because Dad had to use up the film in his camera and then developed the pictures.
During one call, Dad said, “Today at work, one of my co-workers was wearing a T-shirt with a screen-printed picture of the same leaf as my mysterious houseplants. I told him that I had those same herbs, which were growing like weeds, and I had to get rid of them.” Dad continued, “He eagerly took them off my hands, and now I can see out the window again.”
This without doubt awakened my curiosity, and I decided to do some research. In those days, that meant going to the library's reference section. I did some reading and photocopied some articles. I mailed them to my father.
Dad called, “I just couldn't believe what I read in the papers you sent. Those pictures were exactly what my plants looked like. No wonder my co-worker was so willing to take them.”
We both laughed till we cried when we ultimately realized my father had just raised a harvest of precious Chinese herbs used to ease pain.

D.Because the seeds would bring him rich rewards.
25.What does the underlined word “that” mean in Paragraph 2
A.Dad's gardening talents.
B.The herbs' quickly growing.
C.Dad's efforts to tend the seeds.
D.A planting project in the winter.

A.He had little interest in the plants.
B.He recognized the value of the plants.
C.He desired to learn from the author's dad.
D.He wanted to show his knowledge about plants.
27.What is a suitable title for the text
A.Seed catcher
B.Window scenery
C.Helpful co-worker
D.Innocent gardener

Where do great musicians, mathematicians and sportspeople get their talent For decades now, we have assumed that most of them are simply born with a talent that ordinary people do not have. When the baseball legend Ted Williams claimed that his achievement didn't relate to natural ability but was the result of practice, practice, practice, people assumed that he was merely being modest. But scientists now believe that there is a good deal of truth in what he said.
Throughout the last century, it was accepted that we inherit(经遗传获得) many of our characteristics from our parents via their DNA, that each of us inherits a fixed amount of intelligence—a fixed IQ, and that most of us are to be ordinary. But now it is accepted that our genes interact with our surroundings, getting turned on and off all the time. “There are no genetic factors that can be studied independently of the environment,” explains Michael Meaney of McGill University. “And there are no environmental factors that function independently of our genes. They work alongside each other.”
How does this view of the role of genes change our understanding of individual talent and abilities Does it now mean that genes don't matter, and that we all have the potential to be like, say, Franz Beckenbauer or LeBron James Such a claim flies in the face of reason. The genes we inherit clearly matter, as do genetic differences between individuals. But it is also true that Franz Beckenbauer would not have become a super footballer, nor LeBron James a basketball superstar, without putting in thousands of hours of practice. They could have turned out to be entirely different people. Talent researcher Kevin Rathunde agrees. “High academic achievers are not necessarily born much smarter than others but genes do count,” he writes in his book Talented Teenagers, “and above all they usually work harder and develop more self-discipline.”
28.What did Ted Williams think led to his success
A.His natural talent.
B.His full commitment.
C.His modest personality.
D.His extraordinary intelligence.
29.What did we widely believe during the 20th century
A.Intelligence has little to do with DNA.
B.Our genes interact with our environment.
C.The majority of us are of average intelligence.
D.Our character is simply decided by inherited DNA.
30.Why does the author mention “Franz Beckenbauer” and “LeBron James” in Paragraph 3
A.To clarify a point.
B.To illustrate a rule.
C.To offer a solution.
D.To make a prediction.
31.Which statement will Kevin Rathunde probably agree with
A.Most of us are born to be average persons.
B.We could all be geniuses if working hard enough.
C.Genetic factors are more important than hard work.
D.Great talent is a combination of genes and practice.
D
One day, an anti-cancer agent could be a cell with specially equipped powerful balloons that pop when placed near an ultrasound beam(超声束)—killing surrounding cancer cells in its wake.
The key to this operation is tiny protein bubbles. If a microbe(微生物) wishes to rise to the surface, it can create a few bubbles, making its body more flowing and pushing it upward. If it wishes to drop, it can pop a few bubbles and do the opposite. The study's authors wondered if they could put the shock waves from those bubbles to work against tumors(肿瘤).
First, the researchers had to test bubbles' explosive capabilities. They placed them in a Petri dish. After they attacked the dish with ultrasound, in a matter of mere seconds, they identified signs of widespread damage that showed the bubbles were responsible. Then, the researchers tested the process in living, cancer-stricken mice. The researchers put E.coli bacteria in to let the microbes create bubbles. After letting the bacteria circulate for five days, they turned on the ultrasound. By that time, the researchers found that those bacteria had settled deep inside the tumors. Nearly two weeks after the ultrasound treatment, tumors that had been broken grew three times more slowly than those that hadn't. And the mice that had received the bubble treatment survived, on average, more than twice as long as their counterparts(对应的人或物).
“After decades, I just haven't seen that come to fruition,” says Mark Borden, a biomedical engineer at the University of Colorado. Of course, making this research work in the lab is one challenge. They need to ensure that putting bubble-containing microbes into a human body won't end up striking the immune system, and that they won't cause damage to tissues outside the tumor. So, they'd need to further test the way on animals. But, if it does work out, it could add to the ever-growing toolbox that can be used against the threat of cancer. “It's an attractive technology and I think it has a lot of potential,” says Borden.
32.What can the bubbles made by a microbe do
A.Increase the microbe's size.
B.Drive the microbe to move upwards.
C.Remove shock waves from the microbe.
D.Protect the microbe from being damaged.
33.What happened to the cancer-stricken mice after they received the bubble treatment
A.The tumors totally disappeared.
B.They showed signs of suffering.
C.They had a big chance of survival.
D.The tumors changed their appearance.
34.What is the researchers' concern about the bubble treatment
A.It might cost a lot of money.
B.It might face technological problems.
C.It might do great harm to animals' health.
D.It might cause safety problems in humans.
35.What is the main idea of the text
A.Microbe bubbles may damage cancer cells.
B.Microbe bubbles may have a lot of functions.
C.Microbe bubbles may protect humans' immune system.
D.We may prevent cancer cells producing bubbles.

Every 40 seconds someone in the U.S. has a stroke (中风), and about three-quarters occur in people aged 65 or older. 36 . And the lifestyle you adopt can be especially powerful in avoiding strokes. Here's what you can do now to reduce your risk.
37 . Take high blood pressure for example, which some research suggests is responsible for almost half of all strokes. A heart-healthy eating plan may help control it. Also try to limit salt intake, maintain a healthy weight, and exercise regularly.
38 , ask your doctor what levels you should try to achieve and whether medicines are proper. Staying out of the high blood pressure range can be challenging with age due to the higher possibility for medicine side effects. Another important condition to watch out for is atrial fibrillation (AFib) (房颤), an irregular and often rapid heartbeat, which affects at least 10 percent of people over age 80. 39 .
A heart-healthy lifestyle can reduce that risk. But older adults may still develop it, so report irregular heartbeats, chest pressure, shortness of breath, and dizziness to your doctor right away. 40 , the American Heart Association says people over age 65 should have a yearly examination to check for the condition. Treatments include blood thinners and the surgical (手术的) implantation of a pacemaker.
Type-2 diabetes (糖尿病) and high blood fat make you more likely to have a stroke as well, so it's also fundamental to get them under control.
A.As AFib is regarded as incurable
B.Because AFib sometimes has no signs
C.But about 80 percent of all strokes are preventable
D.When it is easy for you to control your blood pressure
E.If your blood pressure is high even with the above measures

The Littlest Firefighter
The 26-year-old mother stared down at her son who was dying of terminal leukemia (白血病).Although her heart was filled with sadness, she also had a strong feeling of determination. Like any parent she wanted her son to grow up and fulfill all his dreams. Now that was no longer possible.
But she still wanted her son's dreams to come true. She took her son's hand and asked, “Billy, did you ever think about what you wanted to be once you grew up Did you ever dream and wish what you would do in your life ”
“Mommy, I always wanted to be a fireman when I grew up.” Mom smiled back and said, “Let's see if we can make your wish come true.”
Later that day she went to her local fire department in Phoenix, Arizona, where she met fireman Bob, who had a heart as big as Phoenix. She explained her son's final wish and asked if it might be possible to give her six-year-old son a ride around the block in a fire engine.
Fireman Bob said, “Look, we can do better than that. If you have your son ready at seven o'clock Wednesday morning, we'll make him an honorary fireman for the whole day. He can come down to the fire station, eat with us and go out on all the fire calls. And if you can give us his sizes, we'll get a real fire uniform for him, with a real fire hat—not a toy one—with the emblem of the Phoenix Fire Department on it, a yellow slicker like we wear and rubber boots. They're all manufactured right here in Phoenix, so we can get them fast.”
注意: 续写词数应为150个左右。

第二部分 阅读
第一节
A
