When it comes to symbols of the UK, people may think of the red telephone box. For many, taking
photos with one is a must-do when visiting the country.
The red telephone box also plays an important role in many movies and novels. One of the most
famous examples can be found in the Harry Potter series. In the story, the secret Ministry of Magic has a
hidden entrance inside a London telephone box. There, people can reach the ministry by dialing 62442.
However, as more people have their own mobile phones these days, public phone boxes are not
used much anymore.
To protect this symbol of British cultural heritage, people are finding creative ways to reuse the
phone boxes. In recent years, they have become mini-libraries, cafes and even art spaces. For example,
along Hampstead High Street in North London, a telephone box has been turned into a cute cafe.
Although it’s tiny, this special cafe offers coffee, tea, cakes and sandwiches.
There are also lots of mini-lending libraries in old phone boxes across the UK. One example is the
Lewisham Micro Library. People can borrow a book from the library and replace it with one of their
own.
Starting this year, 2,000 telephone boxes will be changed into new street centers. These digital red
telephone boxes will offer free WiFi, phone calls and local information over the next 10 years, beginning
in 2025.
24. What is the purpose of mentioning the secret Ministry of Magic in the text

Are you planning to take your pet on a long trip On April 8, China Railway Express announced
that pet owners can now bring their cats or dogs on the same train.
To use this service, pet owners must book tickets at least two days before their trip through the
12306 app. The pet must be a healthy cat or dog, weigh less than 15 kilograms, and be no taller than 40
centimeters at the shoulder. An animal quarantine certificate (检疫证书) is also required.
During the journey, pets are kept in special containers in a separate part of the train, and railway
workers will provide water for them. This service is now available on 10 train routes.
The company said that this service meets the increasing need for pet-friendly travel. 18.7 percent of
pet owners spent money on pet travel in 2024, a 4.9 percent increase from 2023.
Many pet owners welcome the service. Three years ago, when moving from Wuhan to Beijing,
Wang Shanshan traveled by car with her cat because pets were not allowed on trains. “If such a
pet-friendly train service were available at that time,” she said, “it would have been much faster.”
But there are still some concerns. Qin Peixuan worries about air quality in the train. Wang also said
that keeping different animals together might not be a good idea. For example, a dog’s barking may
make cats feel afraid.
While the service still needs to be improved, it reflects a change towards more user-friendly
railways. In the future, we may see more services like this to help meet the increasing need in the market.
Railways will become a bigger part of daily life, not just a way to travel.
28. What is required for pets to board the train
A. They should be less than 40 kilograms. B. They need to stay with their owners.
C. They can’t eat or drink during the trip. D. They have to be checked for health.
29. Why did China Railway Express offer the new service
A. To meet people’s travel needs. B. To encourage keeping pets.
C. To compete with car companies. D. To make the trip interesting.
30. What is Qin Peixuan’s attitude towards the service
A. Supportive. B. Concerned. C. Indifferent. D. Enthusiastic.
31. What will railways probably do in the future
A. Focus more on different pets. B. Reduce the number of train routes.
C. Provide more user-friendly services. D. Replace other means of transportation.

Flying in a beautiful hot air balloon is cool. But have you ever wondered what makes it possible
It’s helium – a very important, but often forgotten gas. The world is running low on helium. In the last 20
years, there have been four times when there wasn’t enough of it.
What we know about helium is lighter than air. Also, you can’t actually see, smell, or taste it. It
doesn’t easily react with other things.
Most people know helium for filling balloons, but it has many other uses. For example, the MRI
machines which doctors use to look inside our bodies, need liquid helium to keep cool and create
pictures to understand patients’ health problems. It is also used to cool parts of satellites and clean
rockets. What’s more, it’s important in making computer chips.
It’s clear that helium is useful, but the problem is that it is hard to get and keep. It only comes in two
ways: nuclear reactions (核反应 ) in stars and the slow breakdown of certain rocks deep in Earth. We
can’t make helium with today’s technology. It is so light that it goes into space. Even when we make it
stay here on Earth, it can go through tiny holes and even go up walls, making it easy to lose after use.
At present, people are working to stop helium from running out. Scientists suggest we improve our
technology and try to use less helium in some fields.
32. What is the problem with helium
A. It is no longer safe. B. It is running out.
C. It is bad for our health. D. It is becoming lighter.
33. What question does paragraph 2 answer
A. What helium is. B. Why we lack helium.
C. How we get helium. D. When we need helium.
34. How does the author show helium has many other uses
A. By telling stories. B. By raising questions.
C. By listing numbers. D. By giving examples.
35. What can we do now to stop helium running out according to the scientists
A. Use other similar gases. B. Make helium heavier.
C. Use less helium in some areas. D. Collect helium from outer space.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a busy morning and I had several tasks to do before the day became too hot outside.
While walking by the side of a busy road, I noticed an old lady, maybe in her 80s standing in danger
close to the traffic. Although I was busy, I thought to myself that I should warn her not to stand so
close to the traffic rushing by.
When I reached where the old lady was standing, I recognized that she was trying to get
attention of passersby who were too busy to notice her. She kept pointing to the middle of the road.
When I tried to gently move her back away from the edge of the busy road, she said that she was
standing there because she had dropped her house key in the middle of the road and was unable to
open her house without the key. I looked around and no one seemed to be interested in the two of us.
I knew I was getting late but decided to help.
The traffic was busy on the road with people on two-wheelers or in cars as well as school buses
rushing with school children. It was the worst time of the day to cross a busy road without a traffic
light.
After asking the old lady to stay at a safe distance, I took a deep breath, stepped onto the road,
and waved my hands wildly, expecting not to be hit by the coming vehicles. At first one lane (车道)
stopped and then I moved further on to the middle of the road, continuing to wave my hand. Just
then a school bus was approaching me and I stepped in front of it to stop it.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
The school bus stopped exactly opposite the spot where the key had fallen.
As I turned to continue my hurried walk, the old lady pulled me by my hand.

三、参考范文
The school bus stopped exactly opposite the spot where the key had fallen. I quickly picked up
the key, ran back to the old lady waiting by the side of the road and returned the key to her.
Although I realized the bus driver got angry at my action in a way, the school children who were
watching me from the bus let out a cheer and clapped, which made me feel proud.
As I turned to continue my hurried walk, the old lady pulled me by my hand. She was so
grateful and gave me a big and warm hug, saying “I don’t know how to thank you and this is all I
have to give you.” Hearing her words, I felt happy that I had given a hand to this old lady. I hope
the school children who were watching me and cheering would help those in need when their turn
comes in life. Meanwhile, I understood a small act of kindness can make a great difference to
others.

M: Could you tell me the name of your hotel, please

W: Yeah, but it’s not mine. I rented it from a website where people rent out their clothes.
M: Really How does that work
W: You look for something that you like in your area and then you go and try it on. If you’re happy
with it, you rent it for a week.
M: I guess it’s cheaper than buying something new.

W: Yeah, it is. I tried on about thirty different dresses in ten different shops last weekend but
nothing was right. So I thought I’d give the website a try. I loved this dress as soon as I put it on.
M: It looks fine. What about me
W: You look great! It’s nice to see you wearing something other than jeans and a T-shirt. Nice tie
too. It matches your eyes.
M: Thanks. I’ll take it off in about an hour, though. It’s not very comfortable.

Welcome to the university gym. My name’s Matt Stevens and I’m the Sports Director on
campus. Before we look at the gym timetable, let me introduce our classes and the gym instructors.
We have boxing, cycling, and dance fitness classes. We don’t have weightlifting at present, but I
hope we can get a weightlifting teacher next spring. Ms Burns here is a dance teacher. She gives
dance fitness classes. The cycling classes are also very popular. They’re with Mr Andrews. If you
are interested in boxing, Mr Fredrick will come here in a few minutes and tell you more about it.
Let’s have a look at the timetable. The gym is open every day from 7:30 am to 9:30 pm. If you like
dancing, we have dance fitness classes on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 5:30 pm to 6:15
pm. The boxing classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30 am to 9:10 am. The cycling
classes are on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays from 11 am to 12 noon. Now, let’s go outside and
have a look at the swimming pool ...
