I had an unusual music teacher in high school. He reminded me a little of Grandpa Munster (but with dark hair). Mr. Kris was a little scary, not very approachable. But I loved to sing. And he loved that I loved to sing. So we had a curious connection.
I wasn’t a remarkable singer and clearly, I was an alto(女低音). But I wanted desperately to be a soprano(女高音). The higher the notes, the better. He humored me and assigned me to the sopranos. I struggled to reach the notes.
Mr. Kris chose me as Sarah Brown in Guys And Dolls and Hodel in Fiddler. The night before the show, I practiced so hard that I lost my voice. I managed to finish the song and the audience clapped anyway. Perhaps they thought my scratchy voice was a stylistic choice. Mr. Kris encouraged me further. He selected me for all county choir.
I graduated high school and never spoke to Mr. Kris again. It must be strange for teachers. They give us a gift and then we leave and a fresh new class comes in. Every year the teacher is a year older but the students stay the same age.
In 2014, I volunteered at my daughter’s high school, where I met Mr. Kris’s nephew. He told me Mr. Kris had passed away two weeks before. I missed the chance to express my gratitude to Mr. Kris. I wanted to thank him for not abandoning me. I needed to thank him for choosing me when I was so unremarkable.
So, Mr. Kris, if you can hear me... Thank you Thank you Thank you. I hope you’re leading a choir of angels in heaven, raising one up and making her feel remarkable. I want you to know your teaching made a difference for me. I am singing, writing and happy with everything to do with music.
24. Why did the audience clap after the author’s performance in the school show
A. They recognized her as a talented singer. B. They felt it a pity for her to lose her voice.
C. They were impressed by her determination. D. They thought she had a personal voice style.
25. What message does the author convey about teachers in paragraph 4
A. Teachers are forgotten by their students. B. Teachers’ influence lasts beyond school.
C. Teachers dislike teaching older students. D. Teachers rarely get thanked by students.
26. Why did the author feel grateful to Mr. Kris
A. He helped her become a famous singer. B. He taught her complex music techniques.
C. He introduced her to professional choirs. D. He supported her despite her lack of talent.
27. What purpose does the author have in writing this passage
A. To express gratitude to a teacher. B. To describe her journey as a singer.
C. To criticize the unfair treatment to teachers. D. To reflect on the challenges of learning music.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are quickly becoming a game-change r in the medical world. These pieces of amazing equipment create a link between the human brain and machines, opening up completely new ways to treat different diseases. Whether they are helping people with disabilities or treating mental health problems, BCIs are showing great promise.
For patients who have lost the ability to move because of serious injuries, BCIs bring real hope. Doctors place small sensing equipment on the scalp(头皮)or sometimes even inside the brain. The sensing equipment picks up the weak electrical signals from the brain. Then, special computers translate these signals into commands that can control robotic arms or electric wheelchairs. For example, a paralyzed(瘫痪的)patient in a hospital room can “tell” a robotic hand to pick up a cup just by thinking about the movement. This helps them do simple tasks like drinking water or holding a book, which were impossible before.
BCIs also play an important role in mental health. Scientists use them to study how the brain works when people feel stressed. By watching the brain’s patterns during these feelings, they hope to develop better treatments. Some hospitals are now testing BCI-based treatment. In these tests, patients wear a head band with sensing equipment that give response to help them relax their minds. Many people say this makes them feel calmer and less anxious.
But this technology isn’t perfect yet. There are some risks, like the chance of infection(感染)near the sensing equipment, especially if they stay in the body for a long time. Another challenge is translating complex thoughts exactly into commands. Sometimes the computer might misunderstand a thought, like mixing up “pick up” and “put down”. However, scientists are working hard to fix these issues. As research continues, BCIs will surely bring more medical breakthroughs and help more people in the future.
28. What does the underlined word “promise” in paragraph I probably mean
A. Potential. B. Signal. C. Commitment. D. Change.
29. How do BCIs help paralyzed patients perform daily tasks
A. By relieving their physical discomfort. B. By translating brain signals into orders.
C. By helping them to think more clearly. D. By assisting them to move more easily.
30. What can be inferred about BCIs from the passage
A. Infection caused by BCIs will be solved soon. B. BCIs are now widely used in mental hospitals.
C. Further research is needed for improvement. D. BCIs can translate complex thoughts exactly.
31. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The assistance of BCIs in patients’ daily tasks. B. The role of BCIs in medical treatment and risks.
C. The risks of using BCIs in medical applications. D. The purpose of scientists’ study on brain signals.
D
Do you ever get that feeling that there aren’t enough hours in the day That time is somehow racing away from you, and it is impossible to fit everything in. But then, you step outside into the countryside and suddenly everything seems slower, more relaxed, like time has somehow changed.
Recent research suggests that the solution to our lack of time may lie in the natural world. Psychologist Richardo Correia, at the University of Turku in Finland, found that being in nature may change how we experience time and, perhaps, even give us the sense of enough time.
Correia examined research which compared people’s experiences of time when they performed different types of tasks in urban and natural environments. These studies consistently showed that people report a sense of expanded time when they were in nature compared to when they were in an urban environment.
Spending time in nature is known to have many benefits for health and wellbeing. Having access to natural spaces such as beaches, parks and woodlands is related to reduced anxiety and unhappiness, improved sleep, reduced levels of overweight and cardiovascular(心血管的)disease, and improved wellbeing.
Some of these benefits may explain why being in nature influences our experience of time. The way we experience time is shaped by our internal physical state and the events going on in the world around us. In the short term, being in nature may provide a break from the rush of modern life, and reduce time pressure by focusing on what actually needs to be done. In the longer term, nature may even boost memory and attention, making us better able to deal with the demands on our time.
32. What’s the aim of the first paragraph
A. To raise a question. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To catch readers’ attention. D. To describe a phenomenon.
33. According to Correia, where do people feel time passes more slowly
A. At home. B. In an office. C. In a museum. D. In the woods.
34. What can we learn from paragraph 5
A. Modern life always leaves us in a sense of rush.
B. Patients are suggested to approach green spaces.
C. Being in nature can let us forget what needs doing.
D. Physical health can influence our experience of time.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. The Health Benefits of Spending Time Outdoors.
B. How Nature Slows Down Our Experience of Time.
C. Richard Correia’s Discoveries in the Natural World.
D. Urban Life vs. Countryside: A Time Management Study.

I was on my way to the library to do some research for my history project. It was a sunny afternoon, and the streets were filled with people going about their daily business. Kids ran around with ice creams, and office workers hurried by with coffee cups, filling the air with chatter.
As I walked, I noticed an old man sitting on a bench, looking sad. He was hunched(弓着背的), and he looked at the ground. He wore a plain gray sweater that seemed too big, and his white hair was messy. Feeling concerned, I decided to check on him.
Taking a deep breath, I approached him. “Are you all right Do you need help ” I asked. The old man looked up with a weak smile. “I’m just lonely. My wife passed away a few months ago, and I still don’t know how to go on,” he said, pulling out a small photo of a young smiling couple. “This was us when we got married,” he added softly.
I sat down and listened as he shared memories of his wife. His eyes shone when talking about happy times but turned sad again soon after.
Suddenly, I remembered my library schedule. Checking my watch, I realized I was late. But I couldn’t leave him alone. “Sir, would you like to come to the library with me You can stay with me while I work.” I suggested. His face lit up. “That would be great,” he nodded.
