When Charlotte Liebling was in college, she volunteered at a store that sold secondhand goods. She observed that people brought items to donate, including stuffed toys (毛绒玩具). Liebling could tell that the toys held great emotional value for their owners. So she felt sad when the toys were sold very cheaply, put in the dog-toy section, or thrown away.
One night, when Liebling got home from work, she started doing some research. She realized that it wasn’t happening only in her town. Worldwide, she learned, millions of toys end up in landfills every year. “If we can change the view that the stuffed toys lose their value once they’ve been loved,” she recalls, “then we can show people that they have so much left in them, and give them to others.” That’s how the Loved Before, a toy-adoption agency, began.
The process starts when someone donates a soft toy. The original owner writes down the name of the toy and a story about it. Liebling and her team believe that sharing what makes the toy unique helps potential new owners understand its value.
Next, the toy is cleaned, photographed, and packaged with its name and story. Every Monday, toys are posted for adoption on the Loved Before website. The company makes a charitable donation of at least half of the profit from the sale of each toy.
Since its creation in 2019, Loved Before has sold more than 50,000 stuffed toys. “But the company’s goal is more than just trying to save some toys from landfills,” Liebling says. “We are trying to change people’s views on a really wide level.” She explains that Loved Before hopes to teach kids “about the value of loving secondhand things again, in the hope that it will go far beyond the idea of teddy bears”. Loved Before is writing a new chapter in the life cycle of toys.
24.Why did Liebling feel sad about secondhand stuffed toys as a volunteer
A.They were not appreciated. B.They were priced quite high.
C.They had no emotional value. D.Their owners couldn’t find them.
25.What does Liebling think is the key to saving used stuffed toys
A.Encouraging people to claim their lost toys. B.Persuading the original owners to keep them.
C.Preventing them from being thrown into landfills. D.Making people realize their value can be passed on.
26.How does Loved Before highlight its toys
A.By offering appealing discounts. B.By including the toys’ history.
C.By making up stories for them. D.By changing the toys’ appearance.
27.Which of the following can best describe Liebling
A.Ambitious and critical. B.Intelligent and firm.
C.Innovative and caring. D.Adaptable and modest.

Artificial intelligence models can trick each other into disobeying their creators and providing banned instructions for making drugs, or even building a bomb, suggesting that preventing such AI “jailbreaks” is more difficult than it seems.
Many publicly available large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, have hard-coded rules that aim to prevent them from exhibiting racial or sexual discrimination, or answering questions with illegal or problematic answers — things they have learned from humans via training data. But that hasn’t stopped people from finding carefully designed instructions that block these protections, known as “jailbreaks”, making AI models disobey the rules.
Now, Arush Tagade at Leap Laboratories and his co-workers have found a process of jailbreaks. They found that they could simply instruct one LLM to convince other models to adopt a persona (角色), which is able to answer questions the base model has been programmed to refuse. This process is called “persona modulation (调节)”.
Tagade says this approach works because much of the training data consumed by large models comes from online conversations, and the models learn to act in certain ways in response to different inputs. By having the right conversation with a model, it is possible to make it adopt a particular persona, causing it to act differently.
There is also an idea in AI circles, one yet to be proven, that creating lots of rules for an AI to prevent it displaying unwanted behaviour can accidentally create a blueprint for a model to act that way. This potentially leaves the AI easy to be tricked into taking on an evil persona. “If you’re forcing your model to be good persona, it somewhat understands what a bad persona is,” says Tagade.
Yinzhen Li at Imperial College London says it is worrying how current models can be misused, but developers need to weigh such risks with the potential benefits of LLMs. “Like drugs, they also have side effects that need to be controlled,” she says.
28.What does the AI jailbreak refer to
A.The technique to break restrictions of AI models. B.The initiative to set hard-coded rules for AI models.
C.The capability of AI models improving themselves. D.The process of AI models learning new information.
29.What can we know about the persona modulation
A.It can help AI models understand emotions. B.It prevents AI learning via online conversations.
C.It can make AI models adopt a particular persona. D.It forces AI models to follow only good personas.
30.What is Yinzhen Li’s attitude towards LLMs
A.Unclear. B.Cautious. C.Approving. D.Negative.
31.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A.LLMs: Illegal Learning Models B.LLMs: The Latest Advancement
C.AI Jailbreaks: A New Challenge D.AI Jailbreaks: A Perfect Approach
D
There’s a popular saying that if only one voice is allowed to exist; then that one voice must be a lie. This quote couldn’t be more relevant now, as many businesses and platforms are using shady practices to silence negative feedback and ensure only those voices benefiting them remain. This practice is so-called “artificial review boosting”, and has been influencing objectivity in reviews ever since.
Its origin dates back to the 20th century when businesses would hand out free samples to obtain a better reputation. However, the practice rises to a new extreme with the emergence of e-commerce platforms. Many online businesses do whatever it takes to ensure high-rating scores, either through giving bonuses and rewards to customers who leave a good review or through bothering and threatening those who leave a negative one. This behavior is not only morally corrupt but also illegal, and it is absurd that many consumers feel they can’t leave negative feedback out of fear that businesses will cause trouble.
It’s apparent that this problem is getting out of hand, but how can we fix it Regulator intervention would certainly help. There should be a tougher crackdown on illegal practices, and e-commerce platforms should be required to protect the privacy of their users. Nevertheless, this is just a small part of the changes needed, as the rating system as a whole needs restructuring. That’s because this system rewards dishonest sellers rather than those selling quality products, and e-commerce platforms, with their profits unaffected, turn a blind eye to its faults.
Against all odds, honest feedback has persisted and people who voice their true opinions still exist, but they are becoming rarer. There’s an old saying that if you put a frog in boiling water, it will leap out, but if you cook the frog slowly in warm water, it won’t notice being cooked alive. We consumers are just like frogs — it’s easy for us to fight together against terrible acts robbing our freedom, but we often ignore when the same freedom is gradually taken from us. There will be no grand coup de grace (致命一击) that ends honest panies will just let it fade away slowly but we mustn’t allow that to happen because consumers play a more important role in keeping honest feedback.
32. What is the main issue discussed in the text
A. The illegal practices of consumers.
B. The history of e-commerce platforms.
C. The benefits of free samples for businesses.
D. The decline of honest feedback due to artificial review boosting.
33. How do businesses ensure high-rating scores according to the text
A. By improving product quality.
B. By cooperating with regulators.
C. By restructuring the rating system.
D. By rewarding positive reviews and threatening negative reviewers.
34. What does the frog analogy imply about consumers
A. They are as adaptable as frogs in hot water.
B. They are easily frightened by sudden threats.
C. They fail to notice the gradual loss of their freedom.
D. They should fight against terrible acts immediately.
35. What does the author suggest about the current rating system
A. It effectively promotes honest sellers.
B. It prioritizes dishonest sellers over honest ones.
C. It has been improved by e-commerce platforms.
D. It is unaffected by consumer feedback and product quality.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show ” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two The talent show for the food bank ” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

One possible version:
I was completely knocked out by the news. What should I do Having prepared for such a long time, I didn’t think of that coming up. Feeling at a loss, I was brainstorming as hard as I could to think of a solution, when a gentle touch on my back brought me back to reality. It was my mum, who looked at me with care and concern. “You have prepared for it enough. You can do it by yourself.” She said after my stumbled explanation. I looked back at her eyes, and a sense of confidence and warmness swelled up in my heart. Yes, I could do it myself.
Finally came the big moment. Looking around the audience, I stepped onto the stage, with butterflies in my stomach. My voice trembled at first, but with the melodies flew around, the nervousness was gone with the wind. Emotions filled in my song, I performed as naturally as I spoke every day. I saw my mum, who was looking at me with reassurance and care. It turned out to be a good performance, which helped me conquer my fears and turned me into a new person.

M: At least you finally worked it out. Would you like to grab a coffee with me now We could go over all of the problems.
W: Oh, I have swim training in a few minutes, (15) and I have to study for tomorrow’s biology exam this afternoon, but I could meet you right after dinner.
M: Uh, I have a meeting to discuss The Signal then.
W: Pardon me, the what

W: Oh, sorry. I just transferred here this month.
M: Anyway, what about tomorrow … maybe after lunch (16)

A workshop is giving new life to bottle caps, food packaging, old toys, and other kinds of plastic waste. The zero-waste workshop known as Trash Kitchen gives people hands-on experience in the recycling process. People take plastic waste, then soften it and shape it into something of value directly in front of them within two hours. It aims to recycle waste material into goods for people to buy. (18) Arthur Huang, who started the company that holds the workshop, (19) said: “What we are trying to show in the Trash Kitchen is to let you see, feel, and touch within minutes how this process can actually work without secondary pollution.” (20) Besides, consumers can also take part in the workshop. It allows them to get first-hand experience, so that they would think twice about producing trash and pay more attention to reusable goods. Arthur Huang believes that if everyone can do their best to use less plastic and recycle it, that will make a big difference to the environment.
