Super Typhoon Rai (known as “Odette” in the Philippines) made landfall on Siargao Island in southeastern Philippines at 1:30 pm local time on Thursday, December 16.The typhoon was the 15th storm to hit the country in 2021 and was the strongest storm of 2021.Almost 16 million Filipinos were facing threats including strong winds, heavy rains, flooding, landslides, displacement and risking loss of life, home, livelihood and agriculture.Around 700,000 of them were children.
UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) expressed deep concern for children and families at risk and announced its commitment to providing support to the Philippine government.Reyn Ambag was one of the children who were rescued during the typhoon.
12 year old Reyn Ambag is a grade 7 student living on the island of Siargao. He goes to school in San Isidro National High School which is located in the Municipality of San Isidro. With Values Education as his favorite subject in school, Reyn is always ready to help others.
Reyn is raised by his mother who is a single parent and runs a retail store alone.Aside from his mother, his cousin has also been living with them to help out in the absence of Reyn's father.Reyn's mother provides for all three of them. She is able to support their daily needs and Reyn's schooling by the income she gets from the small retail store.
During Typhoon Odette, Reyn's family stayed inside the comfort room of the school where they were evacuated (疏散) to.There, he witnessed through the window how the strong winds of the typhoon destroyed the area. They stayed there until the storm subsided and it was safe for them to go out.Upon returning to their home, they were astonished to find that their house was damaged due to the fallen trees.

Aeronautics (航空学) specialists from the University of South Australia spent months studying the dragonfly's flight, creating 3D models from digital images, to build a winged drone (无人机).Study leader Javaan Chahl believes that winged drones based on the dragonfly's shape and movement will simply be more flexible and energy efficient.
Chahl's team used a special photography technique to classify the wing shapes of 75 different dragonfly species from museum collections.Their wings are long, light and hard.Plus, their long bodies give them excellent stability and balance, making it possible for winged drones to deliver awkward loads and undertake long observation missions.
Investigating the way that dragonflies remain stable during flight actually reveals the techniques they use to get themselves out of tricky situations.Dragonflies are found to be able to perform upside down backflips to regain balance and normal flight, when they find themselves upside down mid air. This special skill can even be performed while dragonflies are unconscious, meaning it is a passive stability mechanism similar in concept to planes that are designed to glide to safety with their engines turned off.Engineers are looking to copy dragonfly wings to create safer drones that can right themselves.
Of course, not all attempts to build dragonfly like drones are successful.TechJet's air vehicle was supposed to operate as an aerial camera, observation and security drone, but it failed before production got underway.Similarly, Insectothopter, an American dragonfly spy drone built in the 1970s was deserted.
Yet the principles behind winged drones are solid. In fact, NASA has settled on a nuclear powered autonomous craft called Dragonfly to explore the surface of Saturn's moon Titan in 2034.NASA's project is actually an air vehicle, rather than a winged drone, but engineers are still convinced they can crack the code of nature's most gifted flying insect and revolutionize unmanned flight along the way.
8.Why did aeronautics specialists spend months studying the dragonfly's flight
A.To build 3D models from digital images.
B.To make winged drones modelled after it.
C.To clarify the flexibility and efficiency of drones.
D.To display the shape and movement of the dragonfly.
9.The special skill of dragonflies is their ability to _________________________________.
A.glide to safety
B.avoid tricky situations
C.perform observation tasks
D.adjust themselves to stay stable
10.What is the author's attitude towards winged drones

B.Javaan Chahl: An Innovative Leader of Aeronautics
C.A Dragonfly's Flying Technique: Perfect for Drones

Plants are living things. So can they feel pain?Plants don't feel pain the same way animals and people do, says Anke Steppuhn. She is a scientist at the Free University of Berlin in Germany.“What we define as pain usually has to do with a nervous system,” Steppuhn explains. When you put your hand too close to a hot stove, nerve cells send a signal to your brain.Your brain decodes that signal as pain. This causes you to pull your hand away before any serious damage is done.
Plants don't have nerves or brains, so they can't feel pain like we do.“But plants do recognize when something is hurting them,” Steppuhn says.Because they are rooted to the ground, they can't escape a dangerous situation. So they need other ways of fighting back.
The biggest threat to a plant's life is getting eaten. Some plants grow sharp little hairs.Other plants produce bad tasting or even harmful chemicals. These force an attacker to abandon its meal.A plant called bittersweet nightshade does something even smarter, Steppuhn found. When a slug (蛞蝓) chews holes in a nightshade's leaf, liquid begins dripping around the wound. It is almost as if the plant were bleeding. The liquid is sugary nectar, and it happens to be a favorite food of ants.In their effort to collect the nectar, the ants swarm (蜂拥而至) all over the injured plant. They will attack anything that stands in their way. That includes the slug that damaged the plant in the first place. It's a very clever trick.Whenever a slug attacks a plant, the plant calls an army of ants to kill the slug.
Nectar isn't the only way plants attract bodyguards. They also release certain chemicals into the air when they are being eaten.People usually can't detect these smells. But wasps (黄蜂) can. When a wasp detects this cry for help, it races to the scene of the crime. If it finds the right kind of insect chewing down on the plant, the wasp will interrupt the attacker's meal.It will do this by laying eggs inside the insect's body!
12.Why do plants feel pain differently from us
A.They don't know whether they're hurt.
B.They face different kinds of danger.
C.They don't have nervous systems.
D.They have slow response to pain.
13.What does the underlined part “They” in paragraph 3 refer to
A.Ants. B.Slugs.
C.Plants. D.Wasps.
14.Why do some plants need wasps
A.To help them call bodyguards.
B.To keep them safe from attackers.
C.To let wasps lay eggs on their leaves.
D.To let their smells spread into the air.
15.What is the text mainly about
A.How plants feel pain.
B.How plants attract insects.
C.How plants defend themselves.
D.How plants attack small animals.
