In a foreign country, a man visited a local restaurant. He didn't speak their language. He ordered something indecipherable (难以辨认的) off the menu. When the waiter brought him a plate of delicious looking fried noodles, he smiled and made an OK sign at the waiter with his thumb and forefinger linked in a circle. Looking angry, the waiter then picked up the dish and thrown it to his lap. He wondered what he did was wrong. Well, nothing is quite as it seems when it comes to using hand gesture in another country.
Gestures have been used to replace words in many countries, and they are often specific to a given culture. Gesture may mean something complimentary in one culture, but is highly offensive in another.
The gesture “thumb up” is commonly misinterpreted. In English, it is popularly known as “thumbs up”, despite the fact that the action is commonly performed with only one hand. English speaking Caucasians use it to signal “OK”, which is the same meaning as O.K. ring gesture. The two can in fact be used almost interchangeably.
Avoid using this gesture in Southern Sardina or Northern Greece unless you want to invite a fight. While American, British and Australian would use the thumb up to signal hitch hiking to the drivers, this message will not encourage a Greek driver or motorist to stop to give them a ride.
There are no right or wrong signals, only cultural differences. Lack of cultural understanding will lead to disharmony among people from different cultures. When we know what to look for, such encounters with other cultures are actually very interesting, fascinating and fun. It is certainly a great topic to discuss over a cup of coffee and cakes.
4.What did the man in the first paragraph do wrong
A.He misunderstood the waiter.
B.He made the signal in a rude way.
C.He ordered something off the menu.
D.He didn't realize cultural differences.
5.What does the underlined word in the second paragraph mean
A.Full of aggression.
B.Full of admiration.
C.Full of complexity.
D.Full of certainty.
6.What will happen if you make a thumb up toward a man in Northern Greece
A.He will stop to give you a lift.
B.He will ask you to give him a HA.
C.He will get annoyed and fight against you.
D.He will make the same signal toward you.
7.What's the purpose of the text
A.To tell stories about different cultures.
B.To advise us to have an understanding of cultural differences.
C.To explain the meaning of different gestures.
D.To persuade people from different countries to live in harmony.

If you want to become a fluent English speaker, you should take some advice. There are four skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills you should first master the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can.But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of sentences, the meaning of unfamiliar words, etc. There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammar or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare a notebook for yourself so that you can write down the important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices besides reading. You can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skilful at your reading, and then you can catch up on your listening.Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening.
For listening, you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children.Their languages are easy.Or if you are good at listening, you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day.Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes.
If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically, and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect.
8.According to the author, which should you improve first among the four skills
A.Reading and listening.
B.Reading and writing.
C.Writing and speaking.
D.Speaking and listening.
9.To improve your reading, when you read you should________.
A.look up all new words in the dictionary
B.spend more time studying grammar
C.think about what you are reading actively
D.copy as many words and sentences as possible
10.The author seems to agree with the view that ________.
A.everyone should listen to VOA or BBC programs every day
B.you needn't practice listening if you keep on reading every day
C.being good at reading is helpful in improving your listening
D.you should take notes of whatever you are hearing
11.The text is mainly about how to________.
A.choose suitable listening materials
B.deal with new words in reading
C.improve your English as quickly as possible
D.become good at English reading and listening
D
Do you speak a dialect (方言) in daily life While many Chinese people speak Mandarin, some local dialects are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project a few years ago.
This project looks at how people talk in 1,712 places. Their languages include 103 dialects that are almost gone. It has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. There's an online library where people can learn dialects from over 5.6 million audio clips (音频) and over 5 million videos.
Why is it important to protect the dialect culture According to British linguist Harold Palmer, dialects are a key to store local cultures. Language faithfully shows the history, the beliefs and the biases (偏见) of an area, he said.
Scholar Zhang Hongming talked about his concerns of the disappearing of dialects, “For about over 10 years, in the Wu dialect areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand but hardly speak the dialect. Meanwhile, young people above 15 years old sometimes speak it, but not very well. If this keeps happening, the dialect might disappear,” he said.
So how did China make this big library “A big national effort has been put into the project to make it happen,” said Cao Zhiyun, chief expert on the project. Over five years, more than 350 universities and research groups joined in, along with over 4,500 experts and more than 6,000 dialect speakers.
The project is now entering into its second part. This includes creating digital tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.
12.How does the author start the text
A.By quoting sayings.
B.By sharing a story.
C.By stating his own experiences.
D.By asking a question.
13.What's the third paragraph mainly about
A.The development of Mandarin.
B.Why to protect dialects.
C.How to develop speaking skills.
D.The disappearing of dialects.
14.What's Zhang Hongming's attitude to Wu dialect
A.Worried. B.Positive.
C.Indifferent. D.Unclear.
15.What can we know about the project according to the text
A.It has entered into the third part.
B.Over 5.6 million videos are collected in the project.
C.It looks at how people talk in 1,712 places.
D.Harold Palmer is the chief expert on the project.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was 8 am. Kathy, a 25 year old nurse, had just finished a 12 hour night shifts at a hospital. She was tired, but glad to be sailing along highway to where she lived. Although the local government had posted a snow alert (预警), the calm grey sky convinced Kathy the drive would be safe. “I figured I'd be in bed in an hour,” she said.
Snow began when she was halfway home. Listening to the radio, Kathy learned the highway was closed because a tractor had slid off the road. She texted some friends and her mom, and tried not to sleep as she waited.
After a couple of hours, however, conditions worsened. Strong winds began rocking Kathy's car. She couldn't see anything outside, and snow was drifting up her doors. She said, “It was a total white out and rows of cars and trucks.”
Late in the afternoon a police officer came and asked if she was in any difficulty. She said she was fine. She asked the police officer if there was any way to get past the trucks. “No, ma'am,” he answered. “You're not going anywhere.”
Once as it got dark, Kathy began to worry. She texted her brother Cris, telling him to drive snowmobiling buddy (雪地汽车) to get to the highway and find her.
As Cris rode slowly alongside the rows of cars and trucks, people would roll down their windows and ask for help. “I was the first person they'd seen in six hours.” He explained he was picking up his sister. He told them, “Nobody's coming and I can't take you.”
Near 10 pm Cris reached Kathy. He directed Kathy to pull her car onto the shoulder and asked her to get into his snowmobiling buddy.
As they headed for home, the fun started. About five kilometres into the journey, Cris made a mistake. What he thought was a shallow ditch (浅沟) turned out to be a deep trough (水槽). Instead of coming out the other side, they just kept going down. They were trapped. And feathery snow was over their heads.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
At that moment, they had to take action and get out.

Dear Mr Smith,
I'm writing on behalf of my class to extend our warm welcome to you. Here are some of our expectations for your English class.
First, please give us some guidance and training in our pronunciation, because we all hope to speak English fluently and clearly. Besides, we'd appreciate various activities to get everyone involved in speaking English. Last but not least, we'd like to have topics in class about Western culture. We are all very interested in knowing more about the culture behind the language.
Thank you very much. Looking forward to meeting you!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 参考范文:
At that moment, they had to take action and get out. They shouted at the top of their voice, but no one could hear them. They began to worry and were convinced they had to stay in their snowmobiling buddy for the night. Suddenly, a good idea occurred to Kathy. She took off one of her clothes and burned it. Seeing the fire, people ran over and managed to pull the snowmobiling buddy out with all their efforts, making Cris ashamed for his refusal to others.
When Kathy arrived at her home, her mother was waiting for her. She asked Kathy what had happened. Kathy explained,“We made a terrible mistake. But for others' help, we couldn't have been home for the night.” When asked what she would do when someone had difficulty, Kathy answered immediately that she would do anything to help others because today's experience turned out to be a great lesson for her.
