A man sat at a metro station in Washington D.C. and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, 1,100 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.
Three minutes went by, and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him. They stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet their schedule.
The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother followed him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.
In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk at their normal pace. He collected D|S32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded (鼓掌), nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most beautiful pieces ever written, on a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.
Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theatre in Boston where the seats averaged D|S100.
This is a real story. Joshua Bell's playing in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment.
One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing
4.Why did few people stop to listen to Joshua Bell playing
A.People were in a hurry.
B.They were not interested in music.
C.It was too cold in the subway.
D.The performance was not good enough.
5.What did the parents do when children stopped to look at the violinist
A.They would applaud for the performance.
B.They would urge them to continue walking.
C.They would stop to enjoy the music.
D.They would give him some money.
6.Why did Joshua Bell play in the metro station
A.To make more money.
B.To practise his skills in playing music.
C.To made an advertisement for his concert.
D.To find out people's reaction under such a circumstance.
7.What is the purpose of the passage
A.To tell us the importance of music.
B.To show us how to play music.
C.To set us to think about our life.
D.To report a subway performance.

Robots are increasingly being developed to think and act like humans. But it is difficult for engineers to create humour in puter scientists have hoped to help them understand humour. But they failed again and again. Why is it so difficult
Kiki, a computer language expert, studies humour at a university. “Most robots are powered by artificial intelligence (AI). But AI will never understand jokes like humans do.” he said. “The main problem is that AI system doesn't have the sense of humour.”
Other experts agree that context is very important to understand humour, both for humans and robots. In one project, Tristan Miller, a computer scientist, studied more than 10,000 puns. Puns are a kind of joke that uses a word with two meanings. For example, you could say,“Balloons do not like pop music.” The word “pop” can be a way of saying popular music, or “pop” can be the sound a balloon makes when it explodes.“A robot might not understand the joke because it doesn't know the meaning of the pun,” Miller said.
Although it's difficult, some scientists say there are good reasons to keep trying to teach humour to robots. It can make machines understand humans better and serve humans better. And it can also help them to think more like humans.
But other scientists don't think it's a good idea to teach humour to robots. They may find humour, but they may use it in a wrong way. Maybe bad AI will start killing people because it thinks it is funny. Besides, it may make some people feel not safe. The comedians may lose their jobs when the robots can understand humour.

A.humans B.humour
C.AI system D.robots

10.From the passage, we know that ________.
A.AI system has the sense of humour
B.context is very important to understand humour only for humans
C.if robots understand humour, they can't serve humans better
D.some scientists think it's good to teach robots humour but others don't

NASA has a new job listing, and it's no joke. The US space agency is looking for a “joker” to join their planned mission to Mars.
A mission to Mars is no laughing matter. On average, the red planet is 140 million miles (225 million kilometers) away from Earth. A trip there would take around eight months in a small spacecraft. And Mars has a communications delay of 20 minutes. This means that astronauts will have to wait 20 minutes for a reply, when an emergency happens.
“When you're living with others in a_confined_space for a long period of time, such as on a mission to Mars, problems are likely to occur,” Jeffrey Johnson, a scientist at the University of Florida, told The Guardian.
This is probably why NASA wants an astronaut with a sense of humour. “These are people that have the ability to pull everyone together,” Johnson said.
In stressful situations, perhaps humour is a way to know we aren't alone. By laughing together, we share our stress. Then we can focus on our jobs instead of just worrying.
There are other examples of team “clowns”. One example is the journey to the South Pole led by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. It was a difficult journey, full of danger. Adolf Lindstrom, a cook at Amundsen's team, was a “clown”. He made people laugh through the whole journey. Amundsen later wrote that Lindstrom was the most valuable member of the team.
But if you're hoping that your favourite TV comedian will fly to Mars, that probably won't happen.
“Being funny won't be enough to land somebody the job,” Johnson said.“They also need to be an excellent scientist and engineer.”
Besides, they must be in top physical condition.

12.What is NASA's new job listing
A.A funny engineer. B.A talented clown.
C.A good cook. D.A popular comedian.
13.What does the underlined part “a confined space” in paragraph 3 refer to
A.A crowded space. B.An empty space.
C.An open space. D.A small space.
14.How does the author think humour can help astronauts
A.It can stop them from feeling worried.
B.It can encourage teamwork on a mission.
C.It can help them feel less homesick.
D.It can help them know themselves better.
15.In paragraph 6, the writer uses the example of a cook to show that ________.
A.the explorers' meals on their journey are very important
B.humorous people can cheer up people in difficult situations
C.a cook can play a more important role than the explorers
D.the journey to the South Pole is harder than the mission to Mars

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
April Fool's Day
Nat woke early and jumped out of bed. Today was the best day of the year for him. Nat loved to play tricks, and today was April Fool's Day.
Some of Nat's tricks were big hits. Last year, he short sheeted his sister's bed. She couldn't understand what was going on and started to think that her legs must have grown much longer during the day. When she realized what had happened, she laughed her head off.
Some of Nat's tricks were not so successful. Mom didn't think finding a furry toy mouse in the fridge was humorous at all. After she calmed down a bit, she said, “That's it! There's a ban on Nat's tricks for two weeks.”
Nat was also the class clown. He was always making jokes in class. He liked it when he made the other kids laugh. Since it was April Fool's Day, he felt like he had to come up with something really good to provide his classmates with some really good entertainment.
For that, Nat thought long and hard before he came up with his brilliant idea. He bought two toy frogs which were made out of green plastic and looked very realistic. Nat knew just the trick he would play on his classmates.
Nat arrived at school early. To succeed in his plan, he needed to get into the classroom before anyone else. Nat's class had a rainforest terrarium (饲养皿). It had plants, insects, and three frogs in it. Nat's idea was to pretend that the frogs had escaped. He knew that Ms Lopez, his teacher, wasn't afraid of frogs but several of his classmates, including himself, were.
Nat slipped into the classroom. Good! There was nobody here. He put one of the toy frogs on the floor, near the terrarium and the other on his friend Stacey's desk. Nat knew that Stacey really didn't like frogs. Also, she played a great trick on him last April Fool's Day. To make his trick more convincing, Nat pushed the lid of the terrarium open. Then he rushed off to morning gathering.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式作答。
When the students got back to class, no one noticed the toy frogs at first.

Nat realized that he had opened the lid of the terrarium.

第一节 参考范文:
Smile is a universal language
Today, I am honoured to stand here and share my thoughts on the topic “Smile is a universal language”.
Smile is a universal language that breaks down barriers of language, culture, and background. A simple smile from a stranger can brighten our day and make us feel welcomed. Smiles create a positive atmosphere, promote understanding, and release chemicals that improve our well being. In a world filled with conflicts, smiles have the power to break down barriers, foster empathy, and promote unity. Let's embrace the power of smiles and be the ones who spread warmth and positivity. Together, we can build a world where smiles are the common language we all understand.
Thank you all for listening!
第二节 参考范文:
When the students got back to class, no one noticed the toy frogs at first. Then Stacey, who finally noticed the frogs, screamed and pointed at her desk. The whole class exploded. A couple of other kids leapt out of their seats and screamed while the rest were laughing and hitting their desks. Nat was feeling very pleased with himself. His trick was definitely a success. But he knew he had to hide his glee. He pretended that he was working and reached out for a piece of paper. It was then that something cold and wet crawled past his fingers. It was a frog — a real one!
Nat realized that he had opened the lid of the terrarium. Suddenly, there came a loud noise from under his chair. Nat almost jumped out of his skin with fright. Now he became the laughing stock of the class. What scared him even more was the only person who remained serious — Ms Lopez. She calmly walked down the aisle, picked the frog up and put it back into the terrarium. Then she came to Nat's side, seemingly waiting for his confession. Nat felt his face burning and apologized to Ms Lopez. He also promised to be considerate from then on.
