A former homeless man has been named London's top bus driver, after spending only 16 months on the job. His reputation climbed to the top because he never stops smiling.
Pat Lawson is over the moon about his new title. The 50 year old says his cheerfulness was reborn when he finally managed to land on his feet following a “dark cycle” of homelessness and prison time.
The cycle continued until the father of three suffered an unprovoked (无端的) attack 16 years ago that left him in the hospital fighting for his life.
“I thought I was going to die and I started thinking of my children. I knew it was life or death. I kept thinking, ‘how did I end up in this situation’?” says Lawson. “And that's when I said, ‘I need help.’ I wanted to climb out of the_gutter.”
Lawson was given the chance to turn his life around when he crossed paths with volunteers from the Single Homeless Project (SHP). The charity retrained Lawson as a bus driver, and he says that he fell in love with the job at once.
“I'll say good morning to every single passenger and give them a big smile,” Lawson said. “I was told it wouldn't last long but passengers told me to keep on going.”
From searching London's streets for somewhere to sleep, Lawson can now be found cheerily greeting passengers on the number 26 bus. Since starting the job in March 2017, he has won two awards and received more than 100 acknowledgments (致谢) from members of the public. Last year, he won the Top London Bus Driver prize at the UK Bus Awards with 66 public reviews.
Lawson's unusual journey doesn't stop there, either — he is already planning to write a book about his experiences as a means of helping others who may be trapped in a “dark hole”.
“The key is having the determination to change,” added the driver. “I have been at rock bottom but it was the support from the charities ... that has really helped me.”

B.It excited his interest in driving.
C.It drove him to plan to visit his family.
D.It changed his attitude toward volunteers.

A.Positive. B.Worried.
C.Surprised. D.Disappointed.
7.Which of the following can best describe the driver Lawson

Imagine that you've just experienced something unpleasant — your friend has forgotten your birthday, you've been rejected for a new job, or you've just woken up after a long holiday and remembered you need to go to work. How would you typically respond to those feelings
You might try to tell yourself that it doesn't matter, and not to let it get_to you. This tendency could be described as “mood shame”: The belief that having bad feelings is a personal failing.
Continually looking on the bright side of life might seem strong, even courageous. While it's natural that we might prefer to avoid uncomfortable feelings like disappointment, worry, anger, or sadness, recent psychological research supports the idea that they serve useful purposes in our lives. By learning to see that value and accept those feelings without judgement, we may enjoy better physical and mental health.
Consider anxiety. We may assume that anxious feelings destroy our concentration and reduce our performance on difficult tasks — that we can only succeed on an exam or in an interview if we learn to relax. Alternatively, we can see the feeling as a source of energy. Besides, disappointment may feel unpleasant — but you could recognize that the emotion helps us to learn from our mistakes. And by assigning a more positive meaning to the feeling and acknowledging its potential uses — rather than feeling it is somehow unhealthy — you might change the brain and the body's responses to an upset.
Rather than judging yourself harshly for bad feelings, you might lean into that bad mood, and allow yourself the self care you need to get through it. Without fighting the emotions themselves, you could start to question whether those feelings have value. Perhaps they'll help you to identify an important change you can make in your life.
8.What do the underlined words “get to” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Bother. B.Cheat.
C.Scare. D.Inspire.
9.What can we learn from the psychological research in paragraph 3
A.Being negative leads to bad health.
B.Being positive means having courage.
C.Positive feelings improve working efficiency.
D.Negative feelings may have positive effects.
10.How does the author prove his idea in paragraph 4
A.By analyzing causes.
B.By giving examples.
C.By making definitions.
D.By presenting research results.
11.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A.The causes of bad feelings.
B.The evaluation of bad feelings.
C.The consequences of bad feelings.
D.The suggestions for handling bad feelings.
D
After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance — curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together.
Together, these deep human urges (驱策力) count for much more than ambition. Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground. Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, “Why Why?Why?”
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don't have to be learned. We are born with them and need only recapture them.
“The great man,” said Mencius (孟子), “is he who does not lose his child's heart.” Yet most of us do lose it. We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd. And the crowd desires only the calm and restful average. It encourages us to occupy our own little corner, to avoid foolish leaps into the dark, to be satisfied.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them, we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. We will probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and keep them awake.
How should you start Modestly, so as not to become discouraged. I think of one friend who couldn't arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it. Now she is one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement.
One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You don't have any special ability Most people don't; there are only a few geniuses. You don't have any time That's good, because it's always the people with no time who get things done. Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom's Cabin while cooking. You're too old Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.
However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now, for you'll never be more alive than you are at this moment.
12.What does the example of Galileo tell us
A.Trial and error leads to the finding of truth.
B.Scientists tend to be curious and ambitious.
C.Creativity results from challenging authority.
D.Greatness comes from a lasting desire to explore.
13.What can you do to recapture curiosity and discontent
A.Observe the unknown around you.
B.Develop a questioning mind.
C.Lead a life of adventure.
D.Follow the fashion.
14.What can we learn from paragraphs 6 and 7
A.Gaining success helps you become an expert.
B.The genius tends to get things done creatively.
C.Lack of talent and time is no reason for taking no action.
D.You should remain modest when approaching perfection.
15.What could be the best title for the passage
A.Curious Minds Never Feel Contented
B.Reflections on Human Nature
C.The Keys to Achievement
D.Never Too Late to Learn

Reactions to Disappointment
No one gets through life without experiencing many disappointments. __16__ They tend to react to it in negative ways. They feel depressed or try to escape their troubles instead of using disappointment as a chance to grow.
One negative reaction to disappointment is depression. For example, Helen, a woman trying to win a promotion (晋升), works hard for over a year in her department. __17__ Deeply depressed, Helen loses her love for her job.
__18__ Jamal fails to get into the college his brother is attending, the college that was the focus of all his dreams, and decides to escape his disappointment. He covers up his real feelings by giving up on his schoolwork and getting completely busy with friends, parties, and “good times”.
The positive way to react to disappointment is to use it as a chance for growth. This isn't easy, but it's the only useful way to deal with an unavoidable part of life. __19__ If her boss doesn't recognize her talent and hard work, perhaps she could move to another department. Or she could ask the boss how to improve her performance so that she would be sure to get the next promotion. __20__ Going to another college may encourage him to be his own person, out of his brother's shadow, and realize that being turned down by one college isn't a final judgment on his abilities or potential.
Disappointments are unwelcome but regular visitors to everyone's life. Step over the unwelcome visitor on the doorstep and get on with life.
A.Jamal should look into other schools.
B.Instead, Jamal doesn't worry about college at all.
C.However, the boss names one of Helen's co workers for the spot.
D.Another negative reaction to disappointment is the desire to escape.
E.Strangely, though, most people seem unprepared for disappointment.
F.Helen could have handled her disappointment by looking at other choices.
G.All the other employees tell Helen she is the one who deserves the promotion.

Jenny had hearing problems when she was four years old. Several surgeries later, Jenny was found having a severe joint disease at seven. She could not put pressure on the back parts of her feet, so she walked on tiptoe (脚尖), and when the pain became unbearable, someone had to carry her. Once when she suddenly experienced sharp pain, her friends got her up and carried her from class to class.
All through grade school, and on into high school, Jenny suffered, yet never complained. She took her medicine and wrapped her feet in steaming towels until the pain eased. As soon as she could bear the pain Jenny immediately carried on, as though she was free of pain. She always wore a smile on her face and expressed her love for others.
Jenny had never been a cheerleader or competed in a sport. She could not even take part in a gym class, though she took the same health class four years in a row, through which she could pass with a substitute credit each year.
Jenny continued to have one surgery after another on her ears all through school. Her hearing improved and she taught herself to read lips. She also carried a pillow (枕头) to school so that she could relieve the pain when she sat down. Gradually, Jenny began attending every football game, cheering the team on.
Then came her senior year. She saw documents about scholarships on the school website when visiting it one day. According to the statement, she would be considered for scholarships; however, school activities, especially sports, could often mean the difference between receiving an award and losing out. She continued to read other notices and found an ad from the football team, which stated that the football manager was seeking for an assistant, who would take on ancillary (辅助的) services like taking charge of the team's supplies, communication and security.
Jenny decided to seize the chance.

When asked why the team did so well that year, a player spoke of Jenny.

根据第三部分中的“Blind since the age of four, the author led a lonely childhood in India”可知,Face to Face这本书的作者在书中讲述了自己孤独的童年故事。
根据第二段中的“following a ‘dark cycle’ of homelessness and prison time”及第四段中Lawson所说的话可知,Lawson原来过着居无定所的日子,而且还在监狱待过。
根据第三、四、五段的内容,尤其是第四段中的“And that's when I said, ‘I need help’. I wanted to climb out of the_gutter.”
根据倒数第四段中的“...but passengers told me to keep on going”及倒数第三段中的“...received more than 100 acknowledgments (致谢) from members of the public”可知,Lawson坚持对每一位乘客微笑,他收到了乘客的鼓励和致谢。
根据倒数第二段中的“he is already ...in a ‘dark hole’.”
根据第三段中的“While it's natural that we might prefer to avoid uncomfortable feelings ... they serve useful purposes ... we may enjoy better physical and mental health.”
根据第七段中的“You don't have any special ability ...who get things done.”
21.选B 由上文“a massive accomplishment for any high schooler”可知,这是一个很高的荣誉,所以“通常”给优秀的学生。
22.选C 由上文“a massive accomplishment for any high schooler”可知,这是一个很高的荣誉,所以会给班上“排名”最高的学生。
23.选A 由下文“spent most of their time being homeless”可知,他们偶尔有“栖身之所”,但大多数情况下无家可归。have a roof over one's head表示“有栖身之所”,符合语境。
24.选D 由下文“the shelter is not a perfect environment”可知,这里应该指“收容所”。
27.选C 由上文“But this Floridian teen did much more than that.”
28.选D 由上文“Being named the valedictorian (致告别辞的最优生) would be a massive accomplishment for any high schooler.”
29.选B 由上文“For years, Martin Folsom and his mother have been homeless.”
30.选A 由下文“gave me a shock in my chest a little bit”可知,这里应是在问马丁的“感觉”。
31.选C 由下文“gave me a shock in my chest a little bit”以及语境可知,这里表示被确定为班上的致告别辞的最优生让马丁“稍微”感到吃惊。
32.选D 由下文“all I've done and all I have accomplished was worth it”可知,这次被确定为班上的致告别辞的最优生给马丁一种成就“感”,让他认为他所做的和所取得的一切都是值得的。

34.选A 由上文“should pay attention to Martin Folsom's story”可知,对其他孩子们来说,马丁是一个“鼓舞人心的人”。
35.选C 由上文“Being named the valedictorian (致告别辞的最优生) would be a massive accomplishment for any high schooler.”

the loss of ...

Dear Joe,
I am sorry to hear that you failed in your attempt to run for the position of the basketball team leader. I know exactly how you feel. However, we can learn more lessons from failure than from success. Maybe it is a good thing for your future. Now what is important is to cheer up, learn from the experience and think about what to do next.To be exact, first, did you make good preparations for the competition It is very important to be well prepared for all kinds of activities. Second, what are your strengths and shortcomings This is another question for you to think deeply about, because it will make your next attempt more successful.
Have faith in yourself. You are a capable, wise person and I believe in you.
Jenny decided to seize the chance. The football manager turned her down at first considering her health condition. After that, she began to persuade the manager, begging and promising.Impressed by her persistence, he finally gave in with the warning“If you miss ONE game, you're out!” Jenny nodded in excitement. Before each game,Jenny could be seen carrying big buckets of water to her teammates, with her pillow under the arm.She helped bandage knees, massaged backs and gave spirit lifting talks. She was continually at their beck and call, and it turned out to be one of the best years for the team in its history.
When asked why the team did so well that year, a player spoke of Jenny. “When we're knocked down and can't move, we look up and see Jenny struggling across the field, dragging her buckets and carrying her pillow. It makes anything the rest of us suffer seem insignificant. We feel we have no excuse not to work hard,” he recalled. Finally, Jenny gained recognition and respect that she totally deserved, and she received a number of scholarships. Her favorite scholarship, however, was a small one from a sports club, because she thought it was of special and considerable significance to her.
