If you always sit indoors for too long, putting on weight may become a trouble. Tired of all that fat If so, these sports can help you burn the most calories.
Running
“Running is one of the best calorie burners out there,” qualified personal trainer Daniel Saltos says. An average person can burn anywhere from 500 to 1,000 calories in one hour of running. “Speed, pace, and tolerance are all factors that can impact this range. But running uses every muscle group in the body, allowing you to burn more calories.”
Swimming
“Swimming is a workout that produces the lowest impact on body while it still can burn 500 to 600 calories in just 30 minutes,” Saltos says. Swimming also improves heart health and increases strength — all great reasons for playing in the water.
Boxing
Not only is boxing a great way to release energy, but it also helps improve balance, builds up tolerance and strengthens the upper body and core. “Boxing helps you get a good calorie burn, too, with the average person burning up 400 to 800 calories in an hour session,” Saltos says.
Rowing
The pushing and pulling motion of rowing machines targets multiple muscle groups including the arms, core, and back, helping you to burn more calories.“An hour of rowing will burn 400 to 600 calories on average,” Saltos says.

The idea of climbing Mt.Qomolangma disgusted me. The mountain came to represent the opposite of everything that I loved and respected about climbing. What had once been the final mountain climbing goal became the focus of a commercial guiding industry. Over the years, the crowds at Base Camp grew, leaving behind tons of trash. Whenever I was asked whether I'd climb Mt.Qomolangma, my answer was always the same: not interested.
That was probably where my personal Mt.Qomolangma story would have ended, were it not for an old friend and his obsession (迷恋) with one of the greatest mysteries. In 1999,Thom Pollard began to explore and found the remains of George Mallory, the celebrated British climber who disappeared while he was attempting to be the first to climb Mt.Qomolangma.But Mallory's partner,Sandy Irvine, and the camera he had likely carried, were not found. The mountain climbing world has been wondering whether they might have reached the top in 1924.
Pollard's story moved me. I began to pack for the climb and expected that our advanced equipment would make it manageable, perhaps easy. I was wrong. On the highest point on the planet, I was more tired than I'd ever been in any climbing. Along the way, I continuously tipped_my_hat,_not just to Mallory and Irvine but to anyone who has the drive to push himself or herself up this route. My search was in vain, but I began to reconsider Mt.Qomolangma.
I witnessed many climbers, who were much more than just self centered tourists. We shared route information, weather forecasts, and family photos — all united around a common goal.
I went to Mt.Qomolangma to seek Irvine. But in the end, I found something more difficult to get:the spirit that Irvine and Mallory shared. It was hiding in plain sight, right where it has always been: inside the brave souls who risk so much to follow in storied adventurers' footsteps up Mt.Qomolangma.
4.What is the main reason why the author hated climbing Mt.Qomolangma
A.He changed his climbing goal.
B.Mt.Qomolangma was seriously polluted by trash.
C.Mt.Qomolangma became an industry to make money.
D.The mountain was too crowded with climbers.
5.Why did the author climb Mt.Qomolangma later
A.Because he desired to challenge himself.
B.Because he got motivated by Thom Pollard.
C.Because his old friend persuaded him to climb again.
D.Because he wanted to follow in the footsteps of Mallory and Irvine.
6.What does the underlined phrase “tipped my hat” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Expressed my gratitude.
B.Proved my determination.
C.Relieved the tiredness.
D.Showed my respect.
7.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.Admiration for the climbers.
B.Concern about the risk.
C.Confidence in the journey.
D.Hope for Mt.Qomolangma's future.
C
Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should know that your choice of sport might have a great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource hungry (资源消耗大的).Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water.Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses (球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example,in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.
There are many environmentally friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don't need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes and you don't have to worry about resources and your wallet.Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit.If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones.Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environmentally friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”.They are better replacements (代替物) for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers.Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or some other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it's free.
8.What do we know about golf from the passage

9.Which of the following is not the advantage of power walking according to the passage
A.It is environmentally friendly.
B.It improves our health.
C.It is simple and free.
D.It can make you put on weight.
10.Which sport is the writer most likely to advise us to do
A.Playing basketball in a gym.
B.Motor racing in the desert.
C.Cycling around a lake.
D.Swimming in a sports center.
11.What is the author's main purpose of writing the passage
A.To show us some major outdoor sports.
B.To encourage us to go in for green sports.
C.To discuss the influence of some popular sports.
D.To introduce some environmentally friendly sports.

Sport is not only physically challenging, but it can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create too much anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.
The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents and coaches' criticisms to heart and find faults in themselves.
Coaches and parents should also pay attention that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today's youth sport setting young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find faults with youngsters' performances. Positive support should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive support motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.
12.What is an effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes
A.To make sport less competitive.
B.To increase their sense of success.
C.To reduce their mental stress.
D.To make sport more challenging.
13.According to the passage, sport is positive for young people in that ________.
A.it can help them learn more about society
B.it enables them to find faults in themselves
C.it can provide them with valuable experiences
D.it teaches them how to set realistic goals for themselves
14.Many coaches and parents are in the habit of criticizing young athletes ________.
A.believing that criticism does good to their early development
B.without realizing criticism may destroy their self confidence
C.in order to make them remember life's lessons
D.so as to put more pressure on them
15.According to the passage parents and coaches should ________.
A.pay more attention to letting children enjoy sport
B.help children to win every game
C.train children to cope with stress
D.enable children to understand the positive aspect of sport

During the summer before Patty entered fifth grade, she decided to try a new sport. Swim training was nearly over and Patty was the fastest swimmer in her age group. She had always been the best. The neighborhood was offering a one week tennis training course. Patty and her friend Darla got permission from their parents to join.
On Saturday morning, Darla's mom took the girls to a store and bought them each a good, used tennis racket. “If you girls stick to tennis, then we'll talk about a new racket. These will do for now.” The girls were excited about their new purchases. On Monday morning, at 7:00 a.m., Patty's mom woke her up. “It's time for tennis!” Patty covered her face. “Mom, it's too early!” She made great effort to get out of bed and down to the breakfast table. Patty finished breakfast and ran to Darla's house. Then they walked to the court.
Mrs Cane, the tennis coach, lined everyone up and started with the basics. After that, Mrs Cane tirelessly taught them to practice their forehand(正手击球) and backhand (反手击球). By the end of the week, Patty had made impressive progress. Mrs Cane commented that Patty had lots of potential. Darla, on the other hand, was struggling. The other teenagers were having a tough time of it, too. Patty was the only one who seemed to get somewhere.
Since then, Darla had always been out in the August heat, practicing her serves (发球) or hitting the ball. Patty wasn't really interested. She felt she was such a “natural” for tennis that she really didn't need to practice. By the end of the summer, Darla began to get the hang of it. She joined a neighborhood junior tennis team. There would be matches every Thursday. Patty wanted to join as well, but she didn't want to miss her favorite TV show. She told herself that she would join it when she got some free time. If Darla had fun, she would join the team in the spring.
The week before school started, Mrs Cane held another training course.
Patty couldn't stop thinking of her poor performance on the way home.

本段主要讲的是散步比跑步安全,再结合空后的“it makes you face a greater risk of injury than walking”可知,空处应与跑步比散步更可能带来伤害的原因有关。
再根据本段中的“There is no right choice for which is better for your health” “deciding between walking and running depends on your unique goals and risk factors”可知,本段主要讲的是你到底应该选择跑步还是散步。
根据空前内容,尤其是“you can run for two minutes ...walk for one minute”可知,空处应与“跑步—散步—跑步”这一循环方式相关,故选A项“然后重复这个过程”。
21.选A 根据前文内容“I decided to take the gym seriously”可知,作者决定要在健身房锻炼,之后“开始”养成在跑步机上行走的习惯。
根据后文“My friend, however, became bored.”
keep off意为“使……不接近”。
33.选B 根据冒号后的“ I can do whatever I set my mind on”可知,此处表示作者从这些经历中学到的“经验,教训”。
34.选C 根据并列词and和“ I just need to put in efforts”可知,follow符合题意,努力之后好的结果也会“随之而来”。
be familiar with ...

To encourage us students to get into shape and enrich our school life, our school sports club has launched an activity themed “Exercise one hour every day”.
Regular exercise can be highly beneficial to us. We can go jogging or running in the morning. We recommend taking full advantage of break time at school to play jump rope, hula hoop and so on. In addition, it's workable to cycle or swim after school.
Only with good health can we enjoy a happy life and good academic performance. So I appeal to all the students in our school to work out for an hour every day.
The week before school started, Mrs Cane held another training course. Darla and Patty signed up immediately. In a class, Mrs Cane asked the teenagers to play in turn. Darla came first, impressing others with her excellent performance. Mrs Cane was pleased with Darla's progress. “Well, I can tell who's been practicing!” she smiled. Soon it was Patty's turn. Everyone looked at the “talent” expectantly. Yet, Patty had not practiced and was far behind the rest, which was a shock for all. Patty was upset and absent until the class was over.
Patty couldn't stop thinking of her poor performance on the way home. She realized she needed change if she still wanted to continue with tennis. The next day, Patty came to Darla's team to ask whether she could join when they practiced. Warmly welcomed, she became a member of the team that day. Weak though she was, Patty enjoyed herself and worked hard at practice. She finally found that “natural talent” got her nowhere without diligence and she was able to join in the fun. That was one of the best lessons of her life.
