W: Welcome to Healthy Life. I’m Linda Robbins, in today’s program, we’ll discuss tips on how to fall asleep faster. Some people find it harder to fall asleep than others do. But experts say there are different things we can do to help us fix it. Here are some of them.
Morning light is important. According to Russell Foster, getting a good night’s sleep starts in the morning. He says it’s important to get much natural light as early as possible. This can help move our body clock to an earlier time so that we already feel tired when we get into bed later on.
Don’t nap after 4:00 p.m. While short naps help us feel less tired during the day, Foster says we shouldn’t nap for longer than 20 minutes before going to bed, or we might have difficulty falling asleep later.
Practice mindfulness. “Most people don’t have a sleep problem, but they have an anxiety problem,” Foster says, and he recommends practicing mindfulness as a way to relax before bed. We could try reading or doing some breathing exercises.
He adds that important conversations should be saved for when it’s light outside, because they could keep our mind active and stop us from falling asleep quickly.

Known for its role in Game of Thrones (《权力的游戏》), the dire wolf (冰原狼) went extinct over 10,000 years ago. On April 7, the US company Colossal Biosciences announced restoring this species via de-extinction — a historic first.
Time magazine said scientists studied fossils (化石) such as a 13,000-year-old dire wolf tooth and a 72,000-year-old ear bone and compared their genes to those of gray wolves to discover differences. They edited 14 key genes in gray wolf blood cells to match dire wolf traits, implanting modified cell’s nuclei (核) into surrogate (代孕) dogs’ eggs.
The babies, larger than gray wolves, now live in a preserve. They behaved like wolves by howling at two weeks old. But “we have not seen them attempt to hunt live prey”, Colossal’s Paige McNickle told Time magazine.
Some scientists have criticized the project. Professor Nic Rawlence from Otago University questioned using fossil DNA, calling it too damaged to use. “Ancient DNA is like if you put fresh DNA in a 500 degree oven overnight, it comes out like dust,” Rawlence told the BBC. He argued Colossal actually only created “a hybrid (杂交品种)” — a gray wolf with dire wolf features.
Colossal isn’t just reviving the dire wolf. Their list includes the woolly mammoth, dodo and Tasmanian tiger. Their mission goes beyond de-extinction: they also use the same technique to prevent species in danger from disappearing. For example, they brought back four red wolves, an endangered species, in the same way of restoring the dire wolf.
The Center for Biological Diversity predicts that 30% of the planet’s genetic diversity could be lost by 2050. Colossal CEO Ben Lamm argues that genetic engineering is crucial to prevent this loss. Yet some warn there could be consequences. Introducing new species can cause invasive species, while cloning often leads to health problems in animals and surrogates.

You’ve probably heard the saying that the eyes are the windows to the soul, but now it turns out that they’re also connected to how we breathe.
Our pupils (瞳孔) constantly adjust to light, focus, and emotions. The most common fact is that they control how much light entering eyes: look into a mirror and shine a light into your eyes, and your pupils narrow. Doctors use this to check brain health — for example, unresponsive pupils may signal stroke. Pupils also shrink (收缩) when focusing nearby but expand during hard thinking or strong feelings. This process affects how we see things. Bigger pupils help spot dim (暗淡的) objects in side vision; Smaller pupils sharpen focus for reading. Because pupil size also reflects mental effort, scientists track it to study attention in psychology experiments.
For decades, these pupil reactions were the only ones that scientists were aware of. Now, my team and I have corroborated that breathing is a new one. Through a series of five experiments with more than 200 participants, we have proved that pupil size is the smallest at the start of breathing in and the largest while breathing out.
Although the changes in pupils are tiny — smaller than the pupil reaction to light but similar to that to mental effort or more intense emotions — they are in theory large enough to influence our vision. Meanwhile, different from other pupil reactions, this one originates only in the body and happens all the time. Just like the reaction of our pupils to light, breathing may also be used to detect early symptoms of brain-related problems.

When people think of temple fairs in China, they often imagine Chinese dragon and lion dances. However, in Sihong, Jiangsu Province, Qiangan Dance was recognized as an intangible cultural heritage in Jiangsu province in 2023, due to its cultural 56 (significant).
A qiangan is a stick made of bamboo or wood, usually 57 (decorate) with copper coins (铜钱), bells and ribbons. Qiangan Dance performers use the qiangan to tap their shoulders, waists, legs and other body parts while dancing 58 the rhythm of local folk music.
Hu Bo, 50, is the president of the Qiangan Dance Association in Sihong County. Over the summer I moved from Texas to Missouri. I was really nervous about starting a new school. I decided that I would be much happier in a new school if I made friends that were so-called “popular”. Getting in with the right group of people would make my life a whole lot better. On the first day of school, scared, yet eager to begin my new life, I walked up the stairs. Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people huddled around someone who seemed to be telling some sort of story. I walked over and got close enough to overhear. All eyes were glued to the guy in the middle of the circle. I decided that this guy was popular.
A few minutes later the teacher told everyone to find a seat and get ready for the class. I managed to get one right next to the guy. I said, “Hi, my name is April and I’m new here.” He said coldly, “Hi, I’m Johnny.” That class dragged on and on. Finally, the bell rang. I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is, could you help me find it ” He looked at me and then said a quick NO, turned back to his friends, and walked out of the classroom.
