M:Jane, did you love animals when you were little
W:Yes.Though I never thought I would end up living with the chimpanzees, my love for animals was apparent at a very young age.I really liked giraffes and zebras.
M:What did you dream of doing when you grew a little older
W:①As I grew older, I often dreamt of living among the wildlife in Africa.
M:How did you get an opportunity to work in Africa
W:②My childhood friend James invited me to visit Kenya.I really loved being with the animals there.Just as I was trying to figure out how to make my stay longer, I met Louis and Mary. They liked me and offered me a job.
M:③So that's how you got the chance to study the chimpanzees
W:Yes.③In order to get to know them better, I lived with them almost every day and finally won their trust.
(Text 2)
M:We learned about catfish in science class today. They're very interesting!
W:Oh, really What's interesting about them
M:Well, they have hairs coming out of their face like cats! That's why they're called catfish. But they can be very big, about the size of a small dog.
W:Wow! What else did you learn
M:They can be many colors, from blue to gray to white. They're mostly found in deep, freshwater rivers in the southern United States. They don't usually live in salt water.People love to eat them because they taste delicious. But they're hard to catch because they have sharp teeth that will bite you.
W:That is interesting!
(Text 3)
M:What is that animal I've never seen such an animal before.
W:It's a mountain lion.
M:Are they from Africa I know most lions are from Africa.
W:Actually, mountain lions are not truly lions, even though they look pretty much like lions in Africa.
M:Where do they live then
W:In both North America and South America.
M:Are they an endangered species
W:Yes.Mountain lions haven't been seen in the Eastern United States since 1932.There are now only over 30,000 in the Western United States, and in the state of California, there are only between 4,000 and 6,000 mountain lions.
M:Are they dangerous animals
W:You could say so, though they live mainly on other small animals.A mountain lion may kill a small animal every one to four weeks. They can run up to 50 kilometers per hour and can jump 6 meters from a standing position forward.
M:Then it can't be too hard for them to find prey. How much do they usually weigh
W:They can weigh up to 70 kilograms and can be as much as 2 meters long.
M:Wow, that's quite big.Anna, could I borrow this book when you've finished reading it I'd like to learn more about this species.

Alex rode his bike on his way home, and Johnson's pond came into view.
Sometimes his dad took him canoeing (划独木舟) there, and Alex loved it.The pond was always so alive with activity, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles sunbathing on sunny rocks. Alex was curious about turtles. When it was too rainy to go canoeing, he often went to the library to check out books on turtles,
Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny day.He decided to ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again.Suddenly Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for a rock to be.He jumped off to have a look.
And then, the rock started to move! It was actually a large turtle slowly making its way across the road! Alex knew right away it was a snapping turtle.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car approaching. The turtle was still only halfway across the road. Alex knew he couldn't pick it up because snapping turtles have a powerful bite and they could even bite off someone's finger! What could he do
Thinking fast, he started waving both hands wildly.“Stop! Stop!” he cried. The car slowed down and stopped.
“Are you all right, Alex?” It was his neighbor, Mrs Ramos.
“I'm fine, Mrs Ramos.” said Alex.“I'm just trying to save a turtle. It's probably going to lay egg.”
“Oh, yeah. It's spring.” said Mrs Ramos.“So, I guess a lot of turtles need to lay their eggs in the grass across the road.” Then she waved goodbye and drove off.
Alex thought about what Mrs Ramos had said.“There would probably be more turtles trying to cross the road at this spot!” he realized. But he couldn't stand there all day trying to stop cars.He looked around and a road sign caught his eye.And then his face brightened.

He jumped on his bike and raced home to find Dad.“Dad,can I have some old wood to make a wooden sign?” Alex asked eagerly.Hearing Alex's full explanation, Dad then smiled knowingly. Then the father and son devoted themselves to cutting a wood board into the right “T” shape. After that, Alex wrote down a line with red paint on both sides of the sign, reading “Slow! Turtles Crossing!” Work all done, they put the wooden sign into their car and went for dinner.
The next morning, Dad and Alex drove to the pond with the wooden sign in the car.Upon arriving, they sprang into action.Alex pulled the sign to the side of the road and held it tightly while Dad hammered it into the ground.Sweat dripping into their eyes, they worked with passion until the sign got fixed firmly in the ground.Alex stepped back and surveyed their work.“Slow! Turtles Crossing!” he read out loudly and grinned.“Ready to go canoeing?” “Yes!” Alex blurted out, rushing to the pond with pride.Section Ⅶ 聚焦单元主题活动·发展语言交际技能
