I first realized that plastic was a serious matter for our planet during my travel in Western Australia. One day about 12 years ago.I stopped at a supermarket along the Coral Bay coast to buy some groceries.
But the lady at the counter told me that the supermarket didn't sell any shopping bags to prevent plastic in the ocean and help preserve the endangered turtles (海龟) living in that area. After a first reaction of surprise, I gathered all purchases in my arms and left, reflecting on what I had been told.
The experience in that trip made me more conscious about my impact and pushed me to adopt various habits to travel and live more sustainably. For example, I always carried a cotton bag when I went shopping.
My travel to Indonesia was another life-changing experience that strengthened my determination to turn to a zero-waste lifestyle. In Indonesia, finding safe drinkable water was always a challenge, so I traveled with my water bottle, managing to avoid almost entirely the use of plastic during my trip.
However, I was seriously struck by my stay on the Libaran Island, where a sustainable and turtle conservation project was launched 10 years ago.Despite the big efforts by the project staff and the community in cleaning up the beaches and creatively reusing plastic, the shore was washed daily with tons of plastic coming from the tides.Walking on a carpet of plastic that almost prevented me from seeing the beach underneath was quite shocking.
Facing this global issue in person, I felt a sense of sadness and anger that soon turned into determination: to do as much as possible to reduce plastic in my life.Sometimes we might feel helpless in front of big problems, but we should be aware that small changes could actually make a difference step by step!

When Anika Puri visited India with her family four years ago, she was surprised to come across a market in Bombay filled with rows of ivory jewelry and statues.Globally, ivory trade has been illegal for more than 30 years, and elephant hunting has been prohibited in India since the 1970s.
“I was quite shocked,” the 17-year-old from New York, recalls, “Because poaching (偷猎) is illegal, how come it is still such a big issue?”
Curious, Puri did some research and discovered a shocking statistic:Africa's forest elephant population had declined by about 62 percent between 2002 and 2011.Years later, the numbers continued to drop.Puri, a wildlife lover, wanted to do something to help protect the species and others still threatened by poaching.
Over the course of two years, Puri created a low-cost machine learning-driven software that analyzes movement patterns in thermal infrared (热红外) videos of humans and elephants.Puri says the software is four times more accurate than existing state-of-the-art detection methods. It also eliminates the need for expensive high-definition thermal cameras, which can cost thousands, she says. The software uses a $250 thermal camera with 206 * 156 resolution that plugs into an off-the-shelf phone. The camera and the phone are then attached to a drone (无人机), and the system produces real-time inferences as it flies over parks as to whether objects below are humans or elephants.
Its potential impact on society earned her the Peggy Scripps Award for Science Communication.“Research isn't a straight line,” Puri says.“It makes me resourceful. It helps me develop into a more creative thinker.”

In the face of wildlife loss and habitat destruction, it's easy to feel powerless to improve. But any action you take, no matter how small, will help restore the world to its natural balance. Here are 4 things you can do to help wildlife.
Think twice before landscaping.
9 But unless you're confronting a genuine safety issue, remember that what's unpleasant to you is sweet home to squirrels, birds, worms and other animals that you might not even know are there. If you must landscape your yard, do so in a way that won't drive away native wildlife.
Keep your cats indoors.
It's ironic that many people who claim to love wildlife have no problem allowing their cats to roam (闲逛) freely outside.Cats are animals, too. 10 Outdoor cats, however, don't think twice about killing wild birds. In case you're thinking about “warning” the birds by attaching a bell to your cat's collar, don't bother: Birds have an inborn tendency to flee loud, startling noises, not jingling pieces of metal.
Don't feed any animals but birds.
That deer that wanders into your backyard might look hungry and helpless. 11 Giving food to animals accustoms them to human contact, but not all human beings are as warm-hearted as you are.Feeding wild birds, on the other hand, is OK as long as you don't have outdoor cats and you provide a meal in keeping with the bird's natural diet. 12
Clean up litter (not only your own).
If you're concerned about protecting wildlife, you know better than to litter. But it's not enough to keep your own yard or picnic area clean. You should go the extra mile and pick up cans and bottles left by other people. 13
A.Choose nuts and seeds rather than processed bread.
B.It seems cruel to keep them shut up inside the house.
C.However, if you feed it, you won't be doing it any favors.
D.Most people don't want wild animals to destroy their roses.
E.Small animals can easily get trapped in or injured by this litter.
F.If you have the space, establishing a “mini meadow (草地)” as a border or boundary area is another effective way to attract birds, as well as beneficial insects.
G.If you have just purchased a house or a piece of land, you might be tempted to chop (砍) down unsightly trees.
9.选G 结合小标题“Think twice before landscaping.”
10.选B 下文“Outdoor cats, however, don't think twice about killing wild birds.” 符合语境,且选项B中的keep them shut up inside the house呼应本段标题“Keep your cats indoors.”。
11.选C 根据本段小标题“Don't feed any animals but birds.”
13.选E 此段的小标题“Clean up litter (not only your own).” 上文“You should go the extra mile and pick up cans and bottles left by other people.”

My travel to Indonesia was another life changing experience that strengthened my determination to turn to a zero waste lifestyle.

“I was quite shocked,” the 17 year old from New York, recalls, “Because poaching (偷猎) is illegal, how come it is still such a big issue?”
Over the course of two years, Puri created a low cost machine learning driven software that analyzes movement patterns in thermal infrared (热红外) videos of humans and elephants.Puri says the software is four times more accurate than existing state of the art detection methods. It also eliminates the need for expensive high definition thermal cameras, which can cost thousands, she says. The software uses a D|S250 thermal camera with 206 * 156 resolution that plugs into an off the shelf phone. The camera and the phone are then attached to a drone (无人机), and the system produces real time inferences as it flies over parks as to whether objects below are humans or elephants.
Its potential impact on society earned her the Peggy Scripps Award for Science Communication.“Research isn't a straight line,” Puri says.“It makes me resourceful. It helps me develop into a more creative thinker.”
5.What inspired Anika Puri to make the invention
A.One study trip to Bombay.
B.The deep passion for law.
C.One visit to India.
D.Her love for ivory.
6.How does the author explain the situation of Africa's forest elephant
A.By listing figures.
B.By making comparison.
C.By showing an example.
D.By referring to some former studies.
7.What's the research like in Anika Puri's eyes
A.It's tough and can't reach the goal.
B.It's beneficial to one's development.
C.It really requires a variety of resources.
D.It should be further developed because of the need.
8.What may be the best title of the text
A.Poaching Is a Shocking Problem
