Today, the world's diversity of food crops is quickly decreasing. But scientists around the world are taking action. They are building seed banks. At seed banks, scientists store the seeds of many different crops.
There are now about 1,400 seed banks around the world. However, some banks are in warm countries. If the electricity fails, the seeds will get too hot and die.Other seed banks are in countries troubled by war.Sometimes people damage the seed banks. If this happens, valuable seeds can be lost forever!
The organisation Global Crop Diversity Trust decided they wanted to deal with this problem. So, they decided to build a global seed bank. This seed bank would contain a back up, or extra copy, of all the world's seeds.Smaller seed banks would still collect and keep local seeds. But they would also send copies of their seeds to the global bank.
Scientists from the Global Crop Diversity Trust chose the cold, snowy mountains of Svalbard, Norway to build the global seed bank — the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (斯瓦尔巴全球种子库).Organisations, farmers, or local seed banks store their extra seeds there. And the people who place their seeds in the vault are the only people who can take them out. They pay to ship their seeds to Norway, but it does not cost them any money to store their seeds. The Global Crop Diversity Trust pays for this.
Cary Fowler is a scientist who heads the Global Crop Diversity Trust. He said, “If the Seed Vault simply supplies seed banks with copies of seeds that those banks lost by accident, the Seed Vault will be worth more than it costs.”

In the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, hundreds of journalists were holding lights, cameras and voice recorders as they tried to find strategic positions at group interviews.
Each speaker was allowed only a short time.Everyone laughed because Professor Zhu Youyong carried along a big potato during his two minutes.
“Farmers in China's poor areas can rely on agricultural science to strive for a well-off life,” said the 63-year-old plant-disease expert.
Professor Zhu is nicknamed “potato scholar”.Born into a family of farmers in Yunnan,Zhu said he has an attachment to the land.Since 2016,Zhu's team has promoted agricultural science in Lancang,Yunnan Province.
Zhu said farmers in the area only planted rice once a year. After the harvest, the rice fields stayed unused for the entire winter. In 2016,his team launched a _____ program, which was used to test the idea of growing a late-season potato crop.
pilot
Success soon arrived, with about 3.1 tonnes of potatoes harvested in a field covering just 0.07 hectare, which brought income to farmers of about 9,000 yuan. Then in 2017,Zhu expanded cultivation (栽培) in several villages in the county, benefiting more than 1,000 families.
“We have set a goal of helping every poor farmer in the county to earn 10,000 yuan out of 0.07 hectare of farmland cultivated each winter,so as to lift farmers out of poverty (贫困),” Zhu said.

Many people spend the last years of their lives in an institution, with their daily choices and activities being determined by what they can no longer do. But in the Netherlands, people with dementia (痴呆) are offered a different path forward: meaningful, satisfying farm work, where they can stay active while continuing to contribute to society.
Care farms are widely used in the Netherlands as an alternative to day care centers for people in need of care, including people with dementia. Their goal is to offer a new kind of care that is directed towards familiar environments.
Boerderij Op Aarde is one of the hundreds of Dutch “care farms”run by people facing various illnesses or challenges, whether physical or mental. They provide effective work in agricultural environments. “We are not focusing on what is missing, but on what is left,” says Arjan Monteny,co-founder of Boerderij Op Aarde,“what is still possible for everyone to develop.”
Care farming started growing in popularity in the Netherlands in the late 1990s.A few decades on,care farming is well established in the Netherlands, and interest in the model for people with all kinds of disabilities is growing in many other countries. As an option for dementia care,it is a solution that grows more relevant with each passing year. Rates of dementia are projected to more than double worldwide by 2050.However,how to better care for these people remains a question that many countries are still _______________.
grappling with
At Boerderij Op Aarde, participants start each morning by discussing the day's work. The work is not lacking: pigs need feeding, gardens need care, and hot meals need to be prepared. An outdated workshop chair may need to be repainted. Employees choose which tasks to take on — this is important, says Monteny, because people with dementia do not have many opportunities to make decisions in their lives.
With conditions like dementia, one participant at Boerderij Op Aarde says,“My world is getting smaller, but here,I feel like my life is still in the real world.”

Farmers have long relied on things that work without their involvement — bees to pollinate flowers, earthworms to turn the soil, swallows to eat pests — to make sure that crops grow the right way.Now a team of British researchers is trying to take this hands-off thinking in a high-tech direction.Last October, scientists at Harper Adams University started a farm called the Hands Free Hectare to make the entire process of farming — from sowing and fertilising to harvest — fully automatic. The project has just succeeded with five tons of robot-grown barley (大麦).
“We believe the best idea is that in the future, farmers will manage groups of smaller, autonomous machines,” the researchers explained.“They will go out and work in the fields, allowing the farmer to use their time more effectively instead of having to drive up and down the fields.”
At the moment, agricultural machines — very large and heavy — can cover a lot of space quickly. But there are shortcomings.“Fertiliser gets sprayed over entire farms, regardless of the different needs of different crops. They're also so heavy that they're damaging farmers' soils,” researcher Jonathan Gill said.
Gill and his colleagues went smaller: a tractor,a combine and a harvester, which followed a programmed route, using the navigation system. Altogether, they spent less than £200,000 on equipment, and used open-source technology and a drone (无人机).Eventually the system will be complex enough to treat different parts of a field,or even individual plants, differently.
The team is quick to caution that they don't want to put farmers out of work. They said,“Instead of being busy in the fields, the farmer will manage the machines and monitor their crops.” The next stop for the barley will be a brewery. That's not going to be completely automatic. At least not yet.

“Don't you want to hold him,Ms.Mary Beth?” one of the boys asked me.He held out the snake toward me.I had no choice as an adult but to accept his offering, prepared to collapse on the spot.I expected cold and wet. What I got was dry and soft.Could this snake read my mind In those moments,Humphrey brought me out of a world of fear and into a world of wonder. He made me realize fear can be overcome as long as we dare face it.UNIT 5 课时检测(六) 单元语基回顾性盘查

When a friend, partner or family member is upset, you've probably wondered how best to make them feel better.Offer a chocolate bar Give them space so they can have a good cry A research suggests that one of the most powerful ways to comfort others is to start a conversation.
Words play a powerful role in moulding people's emotions.People's brains are finely aware of the information they get from others, and they're “constantly using it as feedback (反馈) to change their behaviors,” said Razia Sahi, leader of the research.
But the words we use to comfort others matter. The research shows that telling people they shouldn't feel so bad makes them feel worse.Researchers listened in on 228 phone calls between customers and customer service representatives who dealt with medical related complaints (投诉).When the representatives told the upset customers to “calm down” or “relax”, the customers typically became angrier.“These words backfire because they suggest the person's feelings are improper, or that their emotions are stronger than the situation calls for,” Ms Sahi explained.
Some forms of verbal support have been found to be helpful.Ms Sahi stated that friends consider phrases like, “I understand why you feel that way” or “That sounds very hard” — to be especially comforting.Other forms of support, such as helping someone believe things will improve or encouraging a person to see the situation from a new view, also help. And sometimes, those kinds of responses may even be more useful in the long run.
Although it can be hard to know how best to comfort someone, Dr Zaki emphasized that we should be confident that our attempts will be appreciated. In other words, what is most important is not that you say the right thing, but you are there and try to help.“We can make a difference to other people with relatively little effort,” Dr Zaki said.“Sometimes just being there is all that you need to do.”

B.They tended to be emotional easily.
C.They failed to better their situation.
D.They were thought to be overacting.
14.What kinds of support will be more helpful in the long run
A.Promises to help.
B.Comforts from friends.
C.Words of encouragement.
D.Responses to the complaints.
15.What can we learn about comforting others from Dr Zaki's words
A.It is hard for most people.
B.Confidence is necessary.
