When I was young, my mother was very much concerned for my happiness and was always there to support me. We had healthy boundaries (界限). When my own turn came for being a mother, I was determined to do so.
But as my daughter and I sat down to choose courses for the seventh grade, I felt the boundaries begin to fall. Students were allowed three electives (选修课) each term. Several of these were year-long courses—band, orchestra, yearbook and Spanish, and the rest were random (随机的) — technology education, drama, leadership and PE. I hated PE in my own school days.
We read the elective options carefully and sweet relief flooded through me. “You can sign up for band, yearbook and Spanish, and you won’t have to take PE ever,” I told her. I settled back into my chair, a weight taken off my chest. My daughter, however, frowned. “But I’m not sure I want to take Spanish. And I want to do the leadership class... and try drama!”
I broke in on her words with more practical wisdom. “You can’t pick the electives you want, though. They’re organized randomly. So you might get drama and leadership..., or you might get gym class or technology education. You might get the classes you want, and you might not. Is it worth risking having to take PE ” Finally, she chose to take the chance and signed up for band, yearbook and one period of the unknown elective. I reminded myself she was not me.
Watching your child walk into the trap of middle school is worse than experiencing it yourself. Motherhood, after all, is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body. I am not going into the seventh grade again. It is my daughter’s turn. She is her own person, and while she is delicate and easily hurt, she is also stronger and more confident than I was.
4. What is the function of paragraph 1
A. To present a fact. B. To provide an example.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To make a comparison.
5. Why did the author feel relaxed after reading the elective options
A. Drama was her daughter’s favorite. B. Her daughter followed her advice.
C. There were many year-long courses. D. PE was optional for her daughter.
6. What did the author think of her daughter’s option
A. It seemed organized. B. It was uncertain.
C. It was made at random. D. It sounded reasonable.
7. What does the author want to say in the last paragraph
A. Motherhood is rewarding. B. Mothers should learn to let go.
C. Children should ask for help if necessary. D. Children are too young to make a decision.
C
The classic 1951 science fiction film “The Day the Earth Stood Still” includes an impressive character — a frightening robot (Gort) whose terrible actions are under control only when he is ordered, “Klaatu Barada Nikto”. What does this mean I don’t know. But when I overhear my students speaking to each other, I am often similarly confused.
I teach at a university. One of the “problems” is that as the years pass, I get older, but my students remain the same age — 18 to 22. Early on, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn’t an issue, as we were close enough in age to speak the same language. But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed, and I am not on board.
Let me make it clear by using an example: Recently, when I walked into my class, my students were chatting happily with each other. One of their comments caught my ear: “Venmo it to me.” I had no idea what “Venmo” meant, so I asked. The good-natured students were happy to explain it to me, and in return I nodded with an awkward expression, as if I should have known better.
I went home that evening, absorbed in that moment of noncomprehension (不理解). I am not against change, but I am uncomfortable with change when its pace has me hanging on by my fingernails. If I were to awaken from a five-year nap, I’d have no idea what people were talking about. I just wouldn’t understand the language.
Their willingness to explain their words to me is a great comfort, and I congratulate myself on at least having interest in what they’re talking about, as well as on my ability — for the most part — to understand their explanations.
But what will happen if my interest wanes and that the language ship finally disappears over the horizon The answer, to me, is clear: Klaatu Barada Nikto.
8. What did the author probably meet with
A. Hearing loss. B. Cultural shock. C. A language barrier. D. A frightening robot.
9. What makes the author fall behind in language
A. Learning needs. B. Teaching tasks. C. Age difference. D. Language abuse.
10. What does the author think of language change
A. It is entirely avoidable. B. It is really small. C. It is very beneficial. D. It is much too rapid.
11. What does the underlined word “wanes” mean in the last paragraph
A. Lessens. B. Grows. C. Happens. D. Focuses.

The introduction of the iPad, with its touch screen technology, has allowed even very young children to take advantage of a computer. So what if all children in the school were given an iPad to use in class and take home with them
Anne Laure Bazin works in a school where every child, teacher and teaching assistant is given a free iPad to use in and out of lessons. The main advantage of everyone having an iPad has been the improvement in communication. Documents can be emailed straight over to workmates during a meeting. Children hand in their homework by e-mail or through the school’s learning environment. Teachers now take the register using the iPad, which means that there is a centralized record of which children are in school, and which classroom they are in.
The use of iPads has encouraged greater sharing of resources among teachers. All communication with parents is now down by e-mail. Working as a group in class is much easier as children can share documents. The whole class can look at one child’s book by attaching the iPad to the whiteboard. Has forgotten the textbook. The teacher can take a photograph of the relevant and send it to the student in class.
While the use of the iPad in schools has revolutionized the way children are taught, it hasn’t completely replaced more traditional methods of teaching. Worksheets are still used in cross as some children prefer the contact. The children all have a textbook and exercise books. In Anne Laure’s school, Parents feared that the iPads would replace and the children would lose handwriting skills. Anne Laure says, “The teachers are not ready to let go of the traditional style of teaching. We have welcomed the iPads in so much as they help communication and widen the resources that can be used. But we are not ready to let go of paper yet. The children themselves still value their exercise books and depend on them for revision.”
12. What can teachers do when everyone uses an iPad in school
A. They can have deep conversations with students.
B. They can have more time to prepare the lessons.
C. They can learn more about students’ activities at home.
D. They can communicate with their workmates more conveniently.
13. What is an advantage of using iPads in the classroom
A. It saves students bringing the textbooks.
B. It reduces parents’ worry about teaching.
C. It improves the relationship between teachers.
D. It makes sharing information easier.
14. What is parents’ attitude towards the use of iPads in the classroom
A. Worried. B. Uncaring. C. Annoyed. D. Positive.
15. What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A. Teachers prefer traditional methods of teaching.
B. The iPads won’t take the place of printed materials.
C. More and more schools are using iPads.
D. Exercise books are more valuable now.

第四部分书面表达(满分25)
【71题答案】
【答案】Dear Jim,
I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t perform well in the contest of “Telling Chinese Stories in English”. You’re feeling down and you find it so difficult to balance your studies and the involvement in the debate club that you want to withdraw from it. I understand your struggles.
My advice is to reflect on your performance and allocate specific time slots for debates and studies. Prioritize tasks effectively and don’t hesitate to seek help from teachers or peers if overwhelmed. Quitting might seem easy, but perseverance builds resilience. Keep practicing, and you’ll improve. Remember that your potential is limitless. If you need to talk or seek further guidance, I’m always here for you.
Wishing you strength and success.
Yours
