“Stephen!” shouted Billy from the back of the class. “What’s 160 divided by 7 ”
“22.85714,” replied Stephen without looking up.
“Good job!” said Billy, copying the number down in his notebook.
“Stephen! When is Thomas’s birthday ” asked Mary.
“It’s February 16,” said Stephen, “and he was born on a Tuesday.”
“Wow!” said Thomas. “How did you know that ”
“You told me,” said Stephen, “on November 5 last year, at 3:05 pm. It was nine months, three days, four hours and sixteen minutes ago...”
Carol cut in, “You did the calculation (计算) all in your head ”
“Yes, of course,” said Stephen. “How else would I have done it ”
Carol couldn’t believe her ears and almost fell off her chair.
“Wow!” said Thomas. “We have a real genius (天才) here. Right here, in our class!” He looked at Stephen and gave him a big smile.
Stephen turned bright red, like a tomato. “I am not a genius,” he said quietly. “I’m just Stephen.”
“But you’re so good at math and remembering things, surely you must be a genius,” said Thomas kindly.
“I can prove (证明) I’m not,” said Stephen.
He got up and started to collect things from his classmates: a painting, a geography notebook, a history notebook and an English notebook. Then he went to the front of the class.
“Tell me what you see,” Stephen said, holding up Carol’s painting.
“A really good picture!” shouted out Thomas.
Next Stephen picked out Thomas’s geography notebook. “Listen up,” he said. “Test 1, A+. Test 2, A+. Test 3, A+.”
“Good job!” Mary shouted.
“Now you, Mary,” said Stephen. “History project last term-teacher’s words: an excellent piece of work. History project last year-teacher’s words: excellent, good job, Mary.”
Stephen continued, “Now I’m going to read you a poem.” It was from Billy’s English notebook
“What a beautiful poem!” said Carol.
“And what a nice way to prove you’re not a genius,” said Thomas. “You just showed us that ▲ , didn’t you ”
“I hope so,” said Stephen, and he went back to his desk without another word.

Vicky’s mother opened the door. She had a look at Vicky’s bedroom.
“What a mess! It looks as if a hurricane (飓风) passed through Vicky’s bedroom,” said Vicky’s mother. “I must ask her to clean it.”
Vicky was eating breakfast. Her father came into the kitchen and said, “Mom wants you to clean your room. It looks as if a hurricane passed through it.”
Joe, Vicky’s little brother, asked, “A hurricane Is that a bad thing ”
“Sure it is,” said his father.
“I’ll do it after school, Dad,” said Vicky. “My first class is geography and Mr. Miller hates people to be late.” And off she ran through the front door.
Twenty minutes later, Vicky ran into her classroom.
“Today,” said Mr. Miller, “we’re going to learn about hurricanes. Have any of you seen a hurricane ” Vicky thought about her bedroom, but she said nothing.
“I haven’t seen one. Not a real one but I watched a program on TV and I know they destroy (破坏) things and leave a mess,” said James who sat next to Vicky.
“Yes,” said Mr. Miller. “But today I’m going to surprise you. Sometimes hurricanes do good.”
“Hurricanes can be good things ” Vicky asked.
“Oh, yes,” said Mr. Miller. “Hurricanes bring a lot of water to rivers and lakes that are becoming dry. Animals and fish come back to live in them. Hurricanes also pick up heat from the very hot areas of the world and drop it in less warm places.”
“So, hurricanes can be good things,” Vicky said to herself. “I’m going to show Mom the good part.”
When Vicky got home in the afternoon, she began to clean up her bedroom. She put all of her things in their proper places.
“Mom,” she called. “Can you come here for a minute ”
Vicky’s mother put her head around the door.

Plunk! I dropped another pecan (山核桃) into my basket. Then a gentle autumn wind blew some more off the tree. I ran to pick them up. Whew! Pecan picking was hard. My basket was only half full.
I was visiting my grandpa’s farm in Kansas, and Grandpa sent me into the woods to pick up pecans for us to enjoy later. I wasn’t about to let him down.
Then something caught my eye: a squirrel picked up a pecan, climbed up a tree and disappeared into a large hole. A moment later, the squirrel climbed down to the ground to pick another pecan. Once again, he took the pecan back to his secret hiding place inside the hollow (洞) of the tree.
Not so secret anymore, I thought. I ran over to the tree and found the hollow was filled with sweet pecans. They were right there for the taking. This was my chance. Handful by handful, I took all the pecans from the hollow. Now the basket was full!
I was so proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all of the pecans I’d collected.
“Look, Grandpa,” I shouted, “look at all of the pecans I found!”
Grandpa took a look at my basket. “Well, well, how did you find so many, Jimmy ” I told him how I’d followed the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place. Grandpa congratulated me on finding out something about the squirrel’s habits. Then he did something that surprised me. He handed the basket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders.
“That squirrel worked very hard to collect his winter food,” he said. “Now that all of his pecans are gone, don’t you think that little squirrel will be very hungry when it gets cold ”
“I didn’t think about that,” I said.
“I know,” Grandpa said. “But a good man should never take advantage of someone else’s hard work, even the squirrel’s.”
Suddenly I felt as hollow as that old tree. The image (形象) of that hungry squirrel wouldn’t leave my mind. There was only one thing I could do.

Joey was happy because he had many special friends four squirrels (松鼠), two rabbits, and many colorful birds. At the meal time, these wild animals came near to the family and they would feed these special friends.
In the large yard stood thirteen trees of different sizes. One day, while Joey was playing with his sister under the trees, he noticed that a tree trunk (树干) had a sad look. He ran into the house to tell his mom about it. She told Joey to find the reason why it was sad.
So Joey went into the yard, ran to the sad tree and asked, “Why are you unhappy ”

After knowing the reason, the family had a meeting. Joey suggested making a seat under the sad tree. Joey’s father said he could help make a seat around the tree. The family would sit under the tree and the tree wouldn’t feel sad anymore.
When Joey told his special friends the tree was sad, they decided to do what they could to help make the sad tree happy again.

“Oh, boys, don’t throw stones at the poor bird,” said an old grey-headed man.
“Sir,” said a little one,”she makes such a loud noise that we can’t bear her.”
“I am afraid the stone will rebound (反弹) and hurt you as long as you live!”
“Rebound! We don’t understand you, sir!”
“Well, I will tell you a true story.”
“Fifty years ago, I liked throwing stones because I had no other boy to play with and I became very skillful. One day I went to work for an old couple who were very friendly to everybody, even to the birds. And the birds seemed to love the old couple, too. For seven years a bird had come and built her nest (鸟巢) in the same place. She and her mate had just returned on the day I went to work and the old couple welcomed them happily. During the day, I thought I would try my skill upon her. Suddenly the bird flew to a tree near me. I found a nice stone, and I threw it with my best skill. It hit the bird on the head and she dropped dead!
“I was sorry the moment I saw her fall off the tree. But it was too late. All day long her mate flew about, and chirped (发啁啾声) so sadly that he made my heart ache.. I said nothing to the old couple but one of their grandchildren told them about it. Though the old couple never said a word to me, I knew that they were very sad. I could never look them in the eye and tell them how sorry I was. They have been dead for many, many years, and so has the poor bird. But don’t you see how that stone rebounded, and hit me For fifty years I have still remembered it though I have never spoken of it before. But if what I have told you will stop you, I will be happy.”

After two hours’ driving, Sandra’s family came to the hiking trail (路径). It was a dirt trail that went into the forest. Sandra, her mother, and her brother James began to walk. With a birthday usually comes a party, as well as a cake, presents and wishes from friends. But beyond these, what does a birthday mean
One year, I spent my birthday by myself in a completely new place. Calls and messages poured in as usual. However, I was not certain about what to do. I had nowhere to go; I didn’t know anyone to share the joy of the event with, either.
At that moment, my mother called me, asking, “What are you planning for your birthday ”
“I’m not sure, Mum. There’s no one here. I’m so far from home.…” Although my voice sounded so weak, I could still hear its tremble clearly in the empty, quiet room. “You don’t always need a lot of people for your birthday. Just follow your heart and make this day yours.” What Mum said made me less unhappy.
Then I picked up a book and lost myself in it, with music on. I did as my mother had told me and enjoyed “my own day”. But unexpectedly, this solitary day became a bridge—connecting me with my inner self. It was a peaceful but satisfying day. When I lay in bed that night, I remembered my mother’s words, “You came into our lives this day. In the age of smartwatches, Grandpa’s old repair shop on Maple Street was like a time capsule (时间胶囊). The sign moved in the wind: Henson’s Clock & Watch Repair—Since 1952. I spent summers there, watching Grandpa fix pocket watches with tiny tools, his small glass catching the sunlight.
One afternoon, a young woman rushed in with a digital watch. “It’s not working,” she said. Grandpa opened the back, checked the small parts, and shook his head. “It needs a new piece. I can order it, but it’ll take a week.” The woman sighed (叹息), “Buying a new one is faster!” and left in a hurry.
Grandpa turned to an old grandfather clock on his table. Its gold numbers were fading (褪色) “People don’t have patience for old things anymore,” he said. “They look for new things but lose the happiness of fixing what’s broken.”
That summer, Grandpa taught me to repair a 1920s alarm clock. I had trouble with the small parts, my hands getting wet. “Slow down,” Grandpa said. “Time isn’t about rushing. It’s about understanding.” When the clock finally worked, its bell felt like a big win—more enjoyable than any new app on my phone.
Years later, I visited home and saw the shop was gone, replaced by a modern tech store. I felt sad until I found Grandpa’s old worktable in the garage (车库). It was full of old tools and half-fixed clocks. He was sitting there, fixing a pocket watch. “Come help,” he smiled. “This watch has waited 30years for someone to care.”
As I held the watch, the garage was quiet except for the soft tick-tock of a nearby clock. Grandpa’s hands moved slowly, yet surely. Outside, the world was full of new things and quick messages, but here, time seemed to stand still. Maybe some things are worth waiting for.

“You don’t understand me! I wish I had a different mother!” Jiafen shouted. Her mother replied, “I’m just trying to look out for you! Why can’t you listen ” Jiafen couldn’t stand it anymore. “I’m leaving!” she cried and rushed out.
Walking through the streets, Jiafen’s strong feelings slowly gave way to a more basic need: food. She stopped near a small noodle stall (摊子), drawn by the nice smell of freshly cooked food.
The stall owner noticed her. He called out with a big smile, “Miss, would you like some noodles ” Jiafen hesitated, her cheeks turned red with shame. “I... I forgot to bring money,” she said softly.
He waved her over, “Don’t worry. Come sit down.”
Full of gratitude (感激), Jiafen took a seat. Soon, a bowl of noodles was served, along with a few simple dishes. As she took her first bite, the warmth of the food touched her. Tears began to run down.
“Miss, are you all right ” the owner asked.
“I’m just ...” Jiafen said. “We don’t know each other, yet you were kind enough to cook for me. But earlier today, I fought with Mom. She told me not to come back. You showed me more kindness.”
The owner then said, “Miss, I only made you one bowl of noodles, and you feel so thankful. Your mother has cooked for you and cared for you for more than ten years. How could you not feel even more thankful to her ”
Jiafen was shocked. A single bowl of noodles from a stranger had moved her to tears—but what about the countless meals her mother had made
She finished eating and took a deep breath. It was time to go home and say the words she had long taken for granted (理所当然): Mom, I’m sorry. I was wrong.
As she neared her house, she saw her mother outside, scanning the street anxiously. Her face was drawn with worry, but when she saw Jiafen, it lit up.
“Fen, hurry home!” she called out. “I’ve already cooked dinner. If you don’t eat soon, it’ll get cold.” Suddenly, tears filled Jiafen’s eyes again—not from hunger or shame, but from love.

During my middle school days, there was a very special experience that would always stay in my mind. It was a cool Saturday in June. Our class had a picnic in the hill near our city.
That morning, we all woke up early, full of excitement. We met up at the school gate quickly, and each of us carried backpacks filled with delicious food and drinks. We then took a bus to the hill, laughing and joking all the way. The one hour’s ride was filled with so much joy and happiness.
When we arrived at the hill, we found a perfect place under some tall trees. We quickly laid out a big blanket on the soft grass and started to set up our tents. Some students took out fruit and snacks, while others prepared fun games. We played cards, told jokes and sang songs together. The delicious food made our picnic more wonderful. We shared sandwiches, fruit salad and lemonade, enjoying the cool wind. After the picnic, we carefully cleaned up the area, making sure not to leave any rubbish behind.

“Are you okay ” my brother Matthew asked as our car turned upside down. Driving through the desert had become our special tradition. My head felt heavy as we were stuck in the car, surrounded by sand hills.
When I was a little child, I always wanted to be as close to my brother as he was with his friends. When Matthew first heard he’d have a brother, he was excited. But when I was born and he got to know that I was a girl, he felt disappointed. He even hid in his room for days, refusing to see me. As I learned to walk, I followed him everywhere. To him, I was just a “noisy little sister”.
Years later, Matthew invited me to visit him at college after I said I missed him. In his room, he handed me a drink. We talked in our usual way—few words but deep understanding. He always saw my trails and became my support.
Once, when our family left me out of holiday plans because I had to attend my music classes, Matthew refused to go without me. We celebrated together, just the two of us. On the cold November evening, we sat on the floor, sharing a simple meal of sandwiches and laughter.
My brother had become my hero. But after our car accident, I saw his true self—weak and scared. “Are you hurt ” I asked anxiously (焦急地).

On Saturday morning, I planned to go to the pool but Mom asked me to watch my five-year-old sister Lyssa and three-year-old brother Dougie because she had an important job interview.
“Couldn’t Julie watch them instead ” I asked unhappily.
“She can help, but she’s only ten. I’ll feel better with a fifteen-year-old in charge (负责).” Mom kissed me and went away.
About ten o’clock, the kids were playing outside while I was reading my sports magazine, with my headphones on.
Deeply lost in a cool story, I hardly noticed Julie already came in. I took my headphones off. “Look at the sky,” she said nervously. I went out and saw a huge tornado snaked down from the sky to the ground. I couldn’t believe it—a real, live tornado! I was so afraid that my heart was almost in my mouth.
I tried hard to remember the facts I learned about tornado safety in school:
Get low. Find a basement (地下室), or if you’re caught outside, find the lowest place you can.
Looking around, I found a ditch (沟) about a hundred meters away.
“Julie,” I shouted, taking Lyssa quickly. “Get Dougie and follow me to the ditch!”
We were making our way hard because of the wind and rain. Suddenly we all fell to a muddy (泥泞的) bottom two feet below. I made everyone lie, arms protecting their heads. The tornado blew away almost everything. I thought we were going to die...But the next moment, it was over. I lifted my head and saw the tornado rushing away. Soon the sky cleared.
Standing on the mess, I couldn’t stop thinking what if Julie’d been watching them and I’d been at the pool!

The night before I left for college I didn’t sleep much. As my parents drove me to Whitewater the next morning, I watched my town slowly disappear with tears in my eyes. I thought about many things and asked myself repeatedly why I hadn’t chosen to attend a university a little closer to home. But I reminded myself I was leaving for the education program, to play soccer, and to open up my eyes.
The first few weeks were challenging. When I wasn't at soccer practice, I was going through photos and other memories, tears running down. I ran up quite a phone bill that first month. However, it didn’t take long for me to realize that soccer wasn’t really my cup of tea. Then I focused on getting to know the girls on my floor. Strangers quickly became close friends—some felt like family within months.
My first trip home was one I really looked forward to. But when the day finally arrived, I didn’t really know what I’d expected. My family didn’t seem much different, and my bedroom remained untouched. But the whole atmosphere (氛围) was different. Suddenly I felt like a visitor and the place I had spent many years now seemed a little foreign. I met up with many old friends and attended a high-school football game. But when I looked at the people who I used to talk with, somehow I didn’t have much to say.
I returned to school and felt lost. I wasn’t very close to my new friends yet, but a lot had changed with my old ones. I was going through the transition. It’s a time to let go of the past, focus on the present, and aim for the future. If I hadn’t experienced this, I’d have missed out on many things—great late-night talks, water fights, and so on.
College life isn’t easy. There are many things to get used to. But it’s a time to grow and become stronger. When my first year ended, I found myself crying all the way back home, for the same reasons I had cried all the way to Whitewater. But I knew my friends would still be there.

Ginger milk (姜撞奶) is a traditional dessert that has been passed down for many years. It’s very famous not only because it’s a simple yet heart-warming dish, but also because it carries a touching story of respect for the elderly and love.
Long ago, there was a kind woman who cared deeply for her mother-in-law, because the old lady often coughed, especially on cold days. She tried hard to help her mother-in-law. Finally, she and her sister came up with a good idea. They created a special dish—ginger milk. The old lady’s health improved because of the dessert. People were so moved by their care and respect for the elderly that they began to remember the sisters by showing their story in art.
To make ginger milk, you start by washing fresh ginger, then cut it and extract (提取) its juice. Next, pour milk into a pot, add sugar and heat it, but be careful not to let the milk boil. Pour the ginger soup into a bowl and then carefully pour the heated milk into the bowl from a slight (轻微的) height, which helps the milk and ginger mix together. Don’t move it! It was a rainy Sunday afternoon. I was sitting in my room, feeling bored. I had planned to go out and meet my friends, but the bad weather had ruined my plans. I decided to look through some old photo albums. As I turned the pages, I saw pictures of my family’s past vacations, birthday parties, and other happy moments. There was one photo that caught my eye. It was a picture of me and my grandfather standing in a beautiful garden. The sun was shining, and we were both smiling brightly.
My grandfather had passed away a few years ago, and I really missed him. I remembered how he used to take me to that garden every weekend. He would show me all the different kinds of flowers and teach me about their names and characteristics. He told me that there was beauty everywhere if we just took the time to look for it.
Suddenly, I heard a knock on my door. It was my dad. He said, “Hey, why don’t we go for a walk in the rain It can be fun.” I was a bit surprised and didn’t really want to go, but I didn’t want to disappoint him either. So I went out with him.
As we walked along the street, I noticed the raindrops falling on the leaves of the trees, making them look shiny and fresh. As we walked deeper into the park, I saw something amazing. The raindrops had formed little waterfalls on the branches of a willow tree. The drops were falling one by one, creating a beautiful and peaceful scene.

I might have complained about the poor quality of the bed, but there was no doubt that I was too heavy. Standing at 1.72 meters tall, I weighed 95 kilograms. ▲ Day after day, I would just sit glued to my homework or computer. To make matters worse, my parents kept filling my plate with meat—heavy dishes, hoping I would grow stronger and stronger. To their disappointment, though, instead of being strong, all I could do was make my chairs broken.
But perhaps more beds and chairs than ever are now at risk. According to a recent study in 2024, 50.7% of adults and 19% of school children (aged 6—17) in China are overweight. Many adults say they are too busy to exercise. They also have no time to cook at home and therefore often eat out or depend on take-away food services.
But as I often tell my friends, you don’t need a free schedule (日程表) to stay fit. After breaking that poor bed, I decided to lose some pounds. As my busy schedule prevented me from doing exercise at the gym, I tried to stay active in my daily life. This habit has stayed with me. On some days, I cycle the ten kilometers home after work. On other days, I take the bus, but I often get off one stop early and walk the rest of the way. On weekends, I usually stay busy with a good clean-up at home. This, along with a healthier diet, has worked for me. I’m now 21 kilograms lighter than I was in high school. Some of my health problems, to my delight, have improved, too.
You certainly don’t have to break a bed to start your fitness journey. To get into a healthy habit, it’s better to act sooner than later.

I felt a strong sense of pride in my school, as both my father and grandfather had graduated from it. When Mr. Dow, our teacher, told us about a group project to create a brochure (小册子) for the school’s 100th anniversary (周年纪念日), I was filled with excitement. I was grouped with Jake, a photography lover, and Lily, who had a talent for writing. I thought working together would be fun, but my joy didn’t last long.
Our first meeting was a complete failure. When we discussed what part of the school to focus on, Jake kept talking about cameras and his photos. I looked to Lily for help, but she just said, “This project sounds boring.” Jake agreed with Lily. At the second meeting, things got even worse. Jake didn’t collect materials from the library as he promised, showing off weekend pictures instead, and Lily hadn’t started her research, citing busyness. I felt like I was the only one trying to make the project work. So I decided to do it alone at home. However, no matter how hard I tried, the result wasn’t good. My mom noticed I was unhappy. She told me, “You can’t finish this alone. Jake and Lily have skills that can make the project great. You need to find a way to work with them.”
With only three days left, I came up with an idea. I suggested to Jake and Lily that we could put stories and photos together in the brochure. “Jake, your photos can make our school’s history lively,” I said. “Lily, your interesting stories will make the brochure special.” Surprisingly, they liked the idea. Jake took photos of every part of the school, Lily wrote stories about the school’s past, and I organized all the information.
On the final day, we presented our brochure in class. Lily’s stories touched everyone, and Jake even made old photos look better. Mr. Dow smiled and said, “I’m really impressed (使钦佩). You’ve shown the true spirit of our school.” Hearing the cheering from ou
