Activity 1
Watch the video and answer the questions.
1 What is the video about How did it get its name
2 What is remarkable about the road
1 The video is about the historical importance of the ancient Silk Road trade route and its revival through China’s Belt and Road Initiative. It got its name because a lot of the trade along the road was in Chinese silk.
2 The road is remarkable firstly because it lasted around 1,700 years, from the Han Dynasty until the Ming Dynasty. Secondly, it was a unique and important cultural crossroads between the East and West.

1 These pictures show Chinese and foreigners studying, exercising and doing business together, as well as a group of foreign tourists exploring China. The first picture is of a foreign student and two Chinese students walking through their school; in the second, a foreign boy and a Chinese boy are doing Taiji, a traditional Chinese sport; in the third picture, a group of tourists are walking the Great Wall; the last picture shows a foreign businessman shaking hands with a Chinese one.

Investigate
1. Work in groups. Get in touch with someone from overseas who is visiting or living in China and find out if they would be willing to be interviewed. You may ask around or contact a local language learning centre to find out if anyone is willing to volunteer. You could also source potential interviewees on the Internet and do the interview online.
Let your interviewee know the time, date and location of the interview.

1 Hold the interview and video it if you have the interviewee’s consent.
2 You may ask some spontaneous questions during the interview based on their experiences.
Present
Report the results of your interview and show the video to the class. Find out what they think of your interview and whether they are surprised by anything that the interviewee says.
