非谓语动词作表语
一、不定式作表语
不定式作表语表示主语的目的、具体的内容,也表示未来将要发生的事情。
不定式作表语主要有两种情况:
1.主语与表语“等价”的情形,即主语与表语的位置可互换。如:
My dream is to become an English teacher. =To become an English teacher is my dream.
我的梦想是成为一名英语老师。
2.表示想法、约定、义务、命令、可能性、命运等。如:
We are to meet at the station at the appointed time.
我们会在约定的时间到车站见面。(表约定)
You are to come to my office when I call.
我叫你来我办公室的时候,你必须来。(表命令)
二、现在分词作表语
1.作表语的现在分词可以表示一个动作、事实或概念,此时相当于一个名词。如:
The best way to relax after a long day is taking a hot bath.
经过漫长的一天后,放松的最好方式是泡个热水澡。
2.作表语的现在分词也可以表示“令人……的”,常含有某种情绪,此时相当于一个形容词。如:
The news that he won first prize in the English contest is encouraging.
他在英语竞赛中获得一等奖的消息令人鼓舞。
三、过去分词作表语
过去分词作表语常常由表示情绪的动词加-ed构成,具有形容词性质,说明主语的感觉或状态,表示“感到……的”。
1.当人作主语时, 用过去分词作表语表示主语的状态或思想感情等。如:
When we heard of it, we were deeply moved.
当我们听说这件事时, 我们被深深地感动了。
2.过去分词作表语不要与被动语态混为一体。过去分词作表语表示主语的“状态”, 而被动语态则表示被动的“动作”。如:
When a pencil is partly put into a glass of water, it looks as if it were broken.
当把一支铅笔的一部分放进一杯水里时,它看起来好像坏了。(状态)
My glasses were broken by my naughty son.
我的眼镜被我调皮的儿子弄碎了。(动作)
[温馨提示] 现在分词和过去分词作表语的主要区别:
现在分词往往表示主语的特征,通常由物作主语;过去分词往往表示主语所处的状态,通常由人作主语。如:
The teacher was satisfied with the students’ efforts, and their progress was satisfying to see.
老师对学生的努力感到满意,看到他们的进步也令人欣慰。
四、动名词和不定式作表语的区别
当不定式和动名词作表语表示主语的具体内容时,不定式强调特定、具体或未来,通常主语是表示“目的、愿望、梦想、需求”等的名词(aim, purpose, hope, idea, plan, wish)或what引导的主语从句。而动名词则强调一般性、习惯性的动作。有些词后面既可以加不定式,也可以加动名词作表语,只是强调点略有不同而已。如:
My job is teaching my students to learn English.
我的工作是教我的学生们学习英语。
My job is to teach the children to learn to count this week.
我这个星期的工作是教这些孩子学会数数。
注意:当不定式作表语表示主语的具体内容时,若主语中含有实义动词do,则to可以省略。如:
What I want to do is (to) get some fresh water.
我想要做的是弄些淡水来。
